  • Here are some things to consider when owning and using writing instruments made of ebonite, I find this brilliant material very interesting and I own many fine examples of these fountain pens in ebonite. What is your experience with ebonite fountain pens?

      Yes, absolutely :)) - sometimes this is what it takes in order to prove a concept, when it gets hot, is soft like really soft, it doesnt take too much to bend it

    Great video, I think in general it's not talked often enough about how fragile materials like ebonite, urushi and celluloids really are.

    As an Indian, I will say that ebonite is the most readily available material in Indian FPs. But it is not appreciated by general public, though it is dear to the collectors and enthusiasts. I have a Click Falcon ebonite pen.

    I'm new to fountain pens but I've already decided i like the feel of screwing on and off an ebonite top
    The threads have a "grippiness" that acrylic does not have
    Acrylic is too "slick" feeling - it reminds me of PLASTIC
    The vintage pattern of an ebonite pen also inspires me in a way that is tangible

    • @BracaPhoto
      @BracaPhoto 2 месяца назад +1

      The click of it hitting the table is ever so slightly more "thud"- the juiciness of an ebonite feed - etc etc
      Just listing "non-tangible" qualities that are rarely discussed or minimized as "not important"

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Месяц назад +1

      yup - that is in essence te beauty of the ebonite when its used as a platform for a pen, it feels light but yet dense in like its easy to distinguish in between a resin and an ebonite pen :D

    We have a a quite a few small companies making handmade ebonite pens in India - Gama, ASA, Ranga, Guider, Click, Kanwrite to name a few. Some are OEMs too I believe to some renowned western names.
    Anyways, one thing I believe is to keep ebonite away from is water. Especially soaking to remove old ink crusts if they are eye dropper pens or the caps to remove any dried ink inside. I think this can quickly fade the ebonite. I have a pen that left in water overnight (forgot about it) and is half dull now.

      @@pen.venture Ha, I restored the faded mustard / black ripple Ebonite.
      The black ripples had turned light brown and mustard base lighter.
      Two days back during lunch break I tried running a razor blade on a small patch on the pen. The ripple became blacker. Encouraged with the result, ran 150 grit sandpaper and the color came back. Mustard background became darker, light brown ripples became black. Then 200 grit and 1500 grit. It got back the color. Finally used a finger nail buff block to polish the pen.

    Excellent video especially with the more recent ebonite pens. I've heard mixed comments on the use of Renaissance Wax on ebonite to make a shinier surface. Any experience with it or long-term comments?

    I recently picked up my first pen made of Ebonite and like it very much. You're spot on about its advantages and nice feel. I see it as a material best suited for a pen that's expected to work hard while still being pretty. Very nice, but not to be treated as precious.
    One funny thing, at least on the example I have, is the aroma. As a teenager I liked to go to the car races. The smell of hot rubber brings back fond memories.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      Great to hear! I dont own too many ebonite pens, just a few like 6 or 7 but all behaved the same and I had to showcase a few things regarding this material that is for sure making a comeback. The rubber smell is real, with some pens its very smelly with others it is like sealed in and its not that strong

    Hey EMY, thats a great video!, how to remove dents or scratches on the ebonite?
    i have a ebonite pen with regular lacquer and it fell down from the table leaving a dent on the cap finial, how do you get rid of it?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      Thanks for the feedback - dents are pretty serious and I might say it needs some experience and rough sandpaper to even out those dents - I dont have experience with this, as for scratches - for sure micro gloss and a polishing cloth and they will e gone. When is covered by lacquer I think its a compromise that you have to take, you can make it a little better but not like completely gone

    So this makes the Visconti Homo Sapiens almost industructible?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  3 месяца назад

      its an overkill to say indestructible but its far more resilient and strong as a material than any other resins... vulcanic rock when crushed is very pours offering a great deal of strength mixed with a biding agent (glue). On the opposite side for example the why the sand in the desert is not used for concrete, well because the sand grain is round and polished and when ciment is added to it the bond is as strong as the cement only because its not uneven so the cement can have a strong bond

    I'm surprised there was no mention of water. Exposure to water for any amount of time can instantly brown a vintage ebonite fountain pen. Not sure if that holds true for modern ebonite fountain pens also.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      :( I have to say I didnt experienced this behaviour because I didnt let any of them expoed to water too much time, like soaking them in water or so... but I would say if this is the result that it must be mentioned

    I think I'd rather consider moving to a much cooler place before buying an ebonite FP with the awful heatwaves down here at every summer, not sure one of these would withstand +35°C in the attic for a week 😬

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      This has to be also true with wood fountain pens since heat and moisture is a bummer for them as well

    • @mellow-jello
      @mellow-jello 3 месяца назад

      Put your ebonite pen in the fridge on those heatwave days. Simply put in a Tupperware container. Hope this helps.
