It’s definitely a learning curve! 👩🏼🌾 I learned a helpful tip years ago from Gary (TRG) to put mosquito bits in the bottom of my trays to help prevent gnats. I went almost the entire seedling season last year gnat-free.
There is definitely a learning curve to watering seedlings, you explain it so well. I love how you are using that little space for starting plants in that little storage cubby hole. Here a few tips I have figured out along the way. In a 72 cell tray, leave a corner cell open so you can see the water level, sometimes I leave an empty corner in 1020 trays of potted seedlings. If you are running fans (as you should) on your seedlings, they dry out A LOT quicker. After awhile you get a feel for how much water to put in the bottom of a tray so you do not have to dump out excess water, most of my 1020 trays use less than a quart every other day. Started using mosquito bits, active ingredient Bti (Bti, is short for Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis, Bti has no toxicity to people and is approved for use for pest control in organic farming operations) in my worm bins, mainly because I use natural bedding, works terrific on most fly larva. Seeing how I use all homemade seed starter and potting mixes, I have been watering the leaf mold and compost with a mosquito bits solution, worked great the last two years, vertilluly no flying insects, YAY. I hope everyone affected by these terrible fires gets some relief soon. Stay Safe!!!!!
Yes! I have the "self watering" seed trays in grow boxes with clamp lights & GrowMix & they seem to be a haven for fungus gnats. Glad u are safe from the fires! Can't wait til I have time to get into my new book!
You’re so welcome! That green algae can be such a stubborn little guest, no matter how much care you give your seedlings! The good news is that you’re already ahead of the game by keeping a close eye on things. A little extra airflow or a light dusting of sand or perlite on top of the soil might help keep it at bay. You’ve got this-your seedlings are lucky to have such a dedicated plant parent! 🌱✨CK
Can you believe that some RUclipsrs who grow house plants say that when you bottom water the plant only takes what it needs? Not just one or two, but many... unbelievable but I blame on the people who believe it

Good information. I have always wondered how to control the fungus gnats. Hopefully, I won't have that iusse this year. Thanks for sharing 😊!
i keep a pan of water next to my plants and i dip the plant containers in to the water until theyre moist
I like your method! I find that so helpful. Brilliant. CK
@@CaliKim29 its easier to dip the containers in water rather then try to empty the water from seedling trays i usually end up spilling
You're not alone : )
