I was 17 when this album came out, and going to school in Fairfield Connecticut. This album means so much to me and had by far the biggest influence on my guitar playing. You did an absolutely amazing job unpacking it. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Thanks so much! I discovered this album when I was 14 and it totally changed my life not just as a guitarist but as a songwriter as well!
My pleasure so glad you enjoyed it :) what would you like to see more of on this channel?
@@lkgguitar Any others like this would be great. I think it would need to be someone you're as passionate about. I'd love to see something like this on a James Taylor record or another singer songwriter who has had influence on a lot of artists.
@@JKChiaro I mean I am a massive James Taylor fan as well lol!
The other one I was thinking of was potentially Stevie Ray Vaughan, or maybe Gordon Lightfoot or someone like that, or maybe even Paul Simon… What do you think?
@@lkgguitar SRV done in your style would be great. I’d love to see what new inferences you make between SRV and JM.
@@JKChiaro might be the way to go!!
This is really good man!
Holy Crap thanks so much! Absolutely HUGE fan of your channel!
Thanks so much for reaching out :)
Nice to meet another JM/Cory Wong/SRV super-fan!
I’m never washing this comment section again!!
Hi Leo! This video along with RFS lesson series is equivalent to a thesis on JM's guitar techniques, song structure, and the underlying music theory :) We come from a generation who were teenagers in early 2000s when JM was capturing the music scene via Napster and radio stations! It's absolutely brilliant of you to have just soaked in the songs from RFS and develop your ear for decoding and breaking down every element involved in them. Hands down, you are easily the most comprehensive tutor on RFS out there. You are absolutely right about RFS being a gold mine of rich harmonic guitar playing. Thank you so much for the lessons ☺️
You’re too kind thank you so much! These comments are really something else!
I think this album is amazing but it’s Heavier Things that really got me into JM! Excited to get into it and learn some of the less well known songs! I feel like Heavier Things you start really getting into his tone as well which should be really fun to do!
@@lkgguitar You are very welcome :) And I couldn't agree more! Heavier Things is such an underrated album. It's a masterpiece of melodic guitar playing but kinda gets lost between RFS and Continuum. I am sincerely hoping to learn Only Heart, Wheel, Something's Missing, Split Screen Sadness and Come back to bed :) but for the time being you have given us enough material with RFS tutorials to learn, practice and accomplish :D
@@hitesh_blues2353 ah you’re so right! Split Screen Sadness gets me every time it’s such a good song and Bigger Than My Body and Clarity are just masterpieces!
Never looked properly at Come Back To Bed but keen to give it a go!
@@lkgguitar totally agree! HT album has guitar gems like Split Screen Sadness, Only Heart (great guitar riff and solo), Home Life, Something's Missing (riff and muted chord embellishments), New Deep, and Wheel (beautifully bluesy) :)
@@hitesh_blues2353 couldn’t agree more! I’d go so far as to say it’s my favourite JM album I think!
my mind hasn't been been blown off like this ever. this is one of those really handful videos that actually have quality. This is rare. ✨
Ah thank you so much! Hope it helps!
YES RE 6:40 ... that c chord variation in "why georgia". Good video cementing the work mayer's done in this classic album :)
Ah thanks so much and thanks for watching so far in (it says average watch time is currently 5:28 and so you’re dragging the average up!)
The man’s hands are just ridiculous lol. That’s the first thing I’d do if I ever met him I think just compare hand size lol
@@lkgguitar haha yeah lucky you mentioned hand size. Continuum is no doubt a benchmark but of course, this album is a bit closer to his heart and skills due to the struggles of being an upcoming artist. The days before recognition, his signature guitars, amps and nice watches. Thank god he is one of the very last few guitar heroes alive :)
@@anexiole definitely in need of someone to carry on the legacy of the guitar hero into the next generation! Who do you think will be the next generation’s guitar hero??
@@lkgguitar frankly, I haven't the foggiest...
@@lkgguitar hope Mayer has a kid soon lol
Nice, I’ve learned the whole RFS record as well. It’s brilliant and filled with jazz chord voicings that are incredible. Takes your acoustic and guitar playing overall to another level.
I think I’m going to drop into a random coffee shop soon and just play it for fun.
You might get signed you never know!
I have been praying for someone to do something like this, and this guy knows and can teach John Mayer as good as anyone out there, possibly better than Mayer himself. I'm glad to see him talk about the tricky C part in "Why Georgia" that no one ever shows using the thumb over grip. Great stuff! Keep up the great work.
Just found this video, you're brilliant in explaining these things man, really got me understanding Mayers playing better and makes me appreciate all his songs even more, you should have more views!
Thanks so much! Hope you find the channel useful :)
You have the best content on YT for JM, by far.
You’re too kind thank you!
Loved it man! I’d love to hear more playing from you from this album
Thanks man! The video is actually about how I tabbed out and did I tutorial for EVERY song on the album.

Hope you find it useful :)
Great way to finish up room for squares! Very insightful & great video. Definitely gotta start incorporating listening to my routine of learning songs. Once again, great video!
Thanks so much! I think there’s something in this album for everyone definitely! Thanks for watching!
Exclelent, you beat me to it! Gonna see everything and speed up the process!
Haha! Why are you learning them?
Stumbled across this video and man, what a ride! Great analysis and good job on exploring what you absorbed from it. I'm huge JM fan and last year I was invited to do vocals on a JM tribute band, but I also had to do some guitar work here and there and I am very mediocre guitarrist. Sitting down to properly play some of his songs was very challenging but equally rewarding. Great content!
And about the tribute band, we did a birthday gig, recorded it and posted here on youtube, you can find it by searching "Banda Burning Room"
What a great story! Really glad you like to video - plenty more to come as well :) you can find the tabs for the whole of the album on my Patreon if you ever fancy revisiting any of them :)

Will definitely check the cover hand out too thanks :)
Excellent video, love this type of content!
Thank you very much! Hope you find it useful! Plenty more coming soon!
Love the explanation in 13:15 :)
Thanks so much! Hope you find it useful!
Wow great video.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Amazing video man, earned a sub
Thanks so much man! Plenty more coming soon!
That Why Georgia Hammering the 5th fret with pinky is unreachable for me. Even without using thumb. That song was the first song I tried and made me give up playing a guitar.
I really struggled to begin with! The more you play the more mobility you get in your fingers!
You must have heard the commotion rattling around in my brain and decided to make this video ... no other explanation ... thank you.
This was his debut album, the record that set the tone for his entire career. I've always wanted to do this.
I do remember hearing something about a year ago! That must’ve been it!
No honestly thanks so much I really appreciate it :) and I couldn’t agree more this album is like a how to be John Mayer if you learn it!
this is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much :) plenty more essays to come :) you can vote on what you’d like me to next on Patreon if you’d like too :) www.patreon.com/lkgguitar
incredible channel
Thank you :) hope you find it useful!
The tutorials are amazing. Thank you!! Will you be doing ‘Heavier Things’ next? 👀
That's the plan! Finish off AGT and then go back and cover a couple of miscellaneous demos and then Heavier Things :)
@@lkgguitar very cool!! Are you doing the whole AGT show?!
@@tachocoronado3221 a lot of the stuff is quite similar to the album BUT the cool intros and solos I’m gonna do I think as they’re a whole different thing in themselves!
Awesome I just subscribed
Thanks so much and thanks for watching :) hope you find it useful!!
Best album ever created
Certainly takes some beating!!
Timeless
Amazing! Besides the tabs, do you have in Patreon the “stems” for each song? I think it would be really helpful! Your awesome mate, keep up the good work, cheers from Brazil
Thanks so much man! Do you mean the stems that I recorded?
@@lkgguitar Yes
@@Gabriela-dl2vj that never occurred to me! I will absolutely get those onto Patreon yes! :)
This is my goal for Continuum!
You got this! Currently on heavier things!
Next :Heavier Things & Battle studies?😁
Heavier things has begun! Clarity is out :)
Great job learning it all, but just out of curiosity, what do you think is next for you
Thanks very much! So I’m at a crossroads really as to whether to double down on the JM stuff or to expand into other artists in a similar way - like I could do SRV’s first album in the same way and see if that is as insightful or not! Would love to know what you think!
@@lkgguitar personally, I haven’t listened to much SRV (I’ll be sure to check him out though) but I think it would also be kinda cool to see how his songwriting has changed throughout the years, so maybe moving through a few albums of his here and there, but the choice is yours.
@@-astronautical-1549 he’s a big influence on John Mayer and also just an amazing guitarist as well!
Could always to both I guess!!
I did too
Nice one! What was the hardest song to learn for you?
@@lkgguitar neon of course, but also st Patrick's day is very challenging with almost 40 different chords.
I have to say thanks to John and to this particular album because it made me improve my guitar skills a lot, i've never seen someone who played the acoustic in this way, because i was used to boring 4 chords song, his discovery changed my life and let me enjoy the acoustic guitar more and more
@@gianlucatagliati4899 sounds like we’ve had a very similar experience! Literally wouldn’t be the guitarist I am today without this album!
This is great, where did you learn your theory and harmony from?
Thank you :) I’m self taught so learned it as I went along!
@@lkgguitar that’s awesome, I am as well, and have too many resources to count. Any favorites you have? Or places I should check out?
@@Van-Som what sort of thing are you looking for?
7/13.. so close yet so far
So true 😂😭😂😭
I don’t want to bother you, but the bass thumb notes came out out of rockabilly music.
No bother! Where did I say they came from?
