If you want to hear some of my original music you can go here. I need to get back to recording. I did this in my bedroom, all instrument and vocal i did myself in one or two takes. It's really just sketches of song. Todd

'Some Kind of Fool' was initially recorded for the album 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids', but was replaced by 'Burning Bridges' at the last minute - so last minute in fact that a large number of album covers were printed with SKOF in the track listing, and had to be re-stickered with the corrected track. Sylvian (and presumably the rest of the band) felt it was too similar to 'The Other Side of Life' from the Quiet Life album. This version of SKOF from Everything and Nothing is the original 1980's instrumental track with the 2000 re-recorded vocals.

This is David Sylvian's version of this song, not the actual demo recording that the band made.

I believe drums were by Dave Sylvia’s brother and Japan drummer Steve Jansen. Incidentally, he also sings with a voice remarkably similar to David Sylvian. Check the albums he did with Richard Barbieri, most notably Stone to Flesh - Closer Than I. Beautiful, beautiful music. Barbieri is of course part of Porcupine Tree, Jansen is known to be a big early influence on Gavin Harrison - a small world I guess.

Good music and storytelling always make a good combination. The boy with the gun is an excellent example.

The Japan version was somewhat different in pacing and instrument emphasis. Sylvian refined it quite a bit by the time it appeared on his solo LP . This “solo” version is very different my opinion.

Nice reaction, this is one of my favourite Sylvian songs... I first heard about this song some time around '81, in the article it was rumoured that a song called 'Some Kind Of Fool' had been recorded at the 'Polaroids' sessions but at the time it was denied by Sylvian... I'm not sure that the music is Japan (it sounds very Polaroids) but I believe the vocal was recorded for the 'Everything & Nothing' release ant the same is true of Ghosts on the same album... I don't have a problem with DS adding new vocals as I think his vocals did improve slightly over his career. David certainly has one of my favourite voices of all time, I hope that he will find it within himself to do a little recording in his retirement...

Sylvian certainly believes he has gotten better vocally, so do I

@Sons of Pioneers His voice developed a timbre and warmth, it added to the amazing voice he no doubt had... Some believe that his voice was contrived as soon as he started the Ferry-esque croon, Me, I love both, have been a Ferry fan since the start of Roxy Music and a Japan fan since 'Obscure Alternatives'. I don't believe his voice is contrived but I do believe that that he developed qualities that only added to his obvious vocal talent. We both appear to be Japan fans, surely that's all that matters.🙂

Yep, this is brilliant & I have been a lifelong fan of all things Japan & Sylvian related & I must obtain this album. If you like this I would highly recommend Ukrainian band Onuka.

If you cannot recognise the melancholy in the lyrics you are totally missing the essence of the song.
