The war on European democracy | The EU’s crackdown on populist dissent

  • Romania, an EU member state, recently cancelled an election because the ‘wrong’ candidate won. Far from condemning this assault on democracy, Europe’s leaders fell silent. One EU bigwig even praised Romania’s example. Here, Fraser Myers explains that this anti-democratic authoritarianism has not come out of nowhere. European elites have long sought to insulate themselves from the judgement of the voters. Opponents are demonised, censored and shut out of power. Brussels will even oust elected governments if they fail to toe the EU line. As the Euro establishment grows weaker, faced with populist challengers and rotting from within, it is resorting to ever-more authoritarian means to maintain its grip on power.

@@Robert-A-R even our founding fathers of USA they debated the dangers and failings of democracy. USA is NOT a democracy at all. Which is why the leftist keep screaming that democracy is being destroyed. Yes, we need to destroy these ideals and misteachings that the USA is a democracy. We are a Republic with checks and balances in powers and three equal power branches to keep the country a Republic OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE and BY THE PEOPLE. So they steal elections to win. Treason and Sedition. Most serious crimes. They gotta all go, be held accountable and our Second Amendment is for a time such as this. Period. This is America'ends balance of power. Tyrrany is coming to an end, call is authoritarianism, call it whatever. Enfringe on freedom and liberty and all hell breaks loose. And this is what is happening. What they don't want to admit or report on. Lines have been crossed and these evil people believe they have won. Revolutions are paid for in blood. Price of freedom and liberty. Always has been. Europeans have no armies hardened by continual wars for decades. And outside USA huge land mass, personal weapons? People have shooting ranges? Firearm safety classes? Leftists been busy for decades looking for means to remove weapons from Americans. While they keep their personal body guards. Trump is canceling security details. They have to hire their own. Pulling security clearances. Don't need them milking off government. Things are changing. And the freedom loving people are locked and loaded, silently waiting and prepared. And willing to die for America fighting for freedom against all enemies foreign and domestic. Which are many right now. So my greater question is does America have what it takes on home soil?

And nobody in EU said a thing. They don't even want to talk about it. It's simple... because EU is nothing but a project of oligarchies that doesn't care about the lower and middle class citizens, as they call them. they only care about the priviledged enjoying their ''freedom''. He has his hands full fixing our country, which is smart. For better or worse, the people of Europe are going to have to deal with this themselves. They are capable of it, but everyone has gotten so used to apathy and complete inaction, or being censored into oblivion for expressing any of these now proscribed ideas

Because it provides the _appearance_ of a democratic process, self-determination, and legitimacy. Even though people are waking up to that deception, it's still easy for them to throw up the old smoke and mirrors, disrupt people's thinking, and get us backing to arguing over pointless issues and hating each other

Financial benefits to stay, financial harms and penalties if they leave. Its how the EU controls countries. There's also deep interconnectivity issues. My friend is a member of the military in an EU country. He hates the EU technocrats but when populist candidates talk pulling out he rolls his eyes. The member states work in a deeply interconnected way in terms of data sharing, interoperability of communication and data systems, etc... Any country pulling out would be cut off from this and have to in many ways rebuild from scratch, which isn't a very reasonable scenario. And that's aside the individual countries are small like individual states in the US. Going it alone in world defense is not feasible. Some sort of collaboration is needed, and if they pull out, they'll have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. The EU establishment plays this power card too.

Apart from election re-runs the EU is undemocratic in that the Commission has far more power than the parliament and in particular the ECHR. The ECHR having judges decide what elected governments can do is wrong in principle. Particularly when the ECHR has reinterpreted the law well beyond the original wording. This is the ‘living instrument’ approach of the European Court of Human Rights. "The ECHR views the Convention rights as subject to evolution and change in their understanding over time. What constitutes privacy, a right to life and freedom of expression must evolve with technological and social developments". In other words the ECHR will extend their powers over time to be more than it originally was but see the gloss they put on it!

Not being from Europe, I cannot comment on this video. But I would like to ask anyone from Europe who supports the EU why you do so? Do you view yourself as European as opposed to French, Italian etc? Do you think a combined Europe can provide its citizens more than simply a common market? There is a pretty long list of wars involving Europe since 1700, and I’m wondering if you think the EU could prevent wars in the future considering the Russian Ukraine conflict.
