This guy is blowing up, and I couldn't be happier for him. The hardest comedy in the world is "clean" comedy that isn't corny. Very, very few can do it.
I think the key is that this monologue _is_ pretty corny in places, but it’s done really well in a way that feels good and is still clever. It addresses real stuff (aging, addiction) but in a way that’s almost conspicuously… gentle? I dunno what I’m trying to say. It’s real but it’s not mean.
100%. He's fantastic. I just ordered tix to his tour. Can't wait. Bringing my friend who is very reserved, and since his stuff is "clean" I know she'll still have fun.

Congrats to Nate. A clean comic who has worked his way up and committed to his craft. Finally getting the rewards for being relatable and extremely funny.
I didn’t even notice him as a “clean” comic for a long time because he’s just so talented. It was great to see him get this acknowledgment!

@@AbaMiguel there you go. Louis is the perfect comparison, only Nate's comedy being clean. It's like they both end up in spots where they're thinking "wait, is that what I meant to say? No, hold on, the joke is different. Hang on, no, yeah that's how it goes." And they find themselves trying to work it out in their own heads and it makes it 1000 times funnier somehow.
He’s really mastered the “i guess that’s how the world works…” energy that makes every single joke here and in his specials absolutely kill. You know he’s performing, but every punch line you feel like this is your friend who is shocked by something in the world who just walked into the room and said “you won’t believe what I just saw”

Not many comedians can pull off the jokes that Nate does. They are just basic jokes but this guy has mastered dead pan delivery its extremely hilarious
You can tell he was nervous but warned right up and killed. Nate is hilarious, very happy to see him hosting!

That also seems to play into his style! The "um"s and awkward delivery makes it that much funnier because the flow of the joke becomes unpredictable and a lot of comedy comes from unpredictability! He used it to his advantage!!!

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. So happy for Nate to reach this achievement in his career, and great job SNL for recognizing his skill.
You can go back and watch his older stuff, and aside from him physically looking different, the comedy is just as great. His delivery is so casual that his jokes just sneak up on you. Love seeing him truly being in his prime.

So happy Nate just got up and did his thing! Material you'd see at any show - he doesn't need a gimmick to open - his storytelling style of comedy translates everywhere. Props- he deserves every good thing that's come his way!

By the way, if it’s material you’d see at any show, you’re giving it the characteristics of a gimmick. A repeatable trick that gains attention, sounds a lot like what stand up is in general. You might not like the word gimmick but that’s what it is. Every comedian has a gimmick, their own trick to gain attention from the audience. Literally definition of gimmick

Most comedians that host SNL tell their jokes during the monologue. This wasn’t any different.

Nate ranks high among my all-time favorite comedians. I’ve appreciated him for several years now. I’m genuinely happy for him and I love that more people are now exposed to his work. He’s adding some good funny to the world.

if you haven't seen it, Nate was the voice actor for Grady in Aperture Desk Job and it was absolutely excellent.

Answer me this is please... . I've watched the monologue/ George Washington skit 4 times so far and they're still just as hillarious as the first time I saw them. I told my brother to watch them when he has a chance. He did and he said they were just ok ... that he'd seen better. Really? Why would someone think that? Is it jealousy? Brilliant opening. I laughed out loud and hard. I always watch the bands reaction to the opening monologue. This time every band member was listening, was engaged, was smiling and laughed too. 🎉

He's unbelievably talented. I howl during the pauses -- he totally gets comedy ... the timing, the deadpan, everything. He's the real deal.
He's so brilliant, his humble and deadpan delivery of those matter-of-fact stories from his unique perspective is just a perfect combination. As many have said, glad he's getting more recognition and hopefully more specials to come

One of my favorite things as I watched this live was watching the band in the background, how they genuinely looked to be enjoying Nate. Idk, there’s just something so wholesome about it 😊

Nate’s officially reached the top of my all-time comedians list. His approach is, to me, unique because it’s like we’re just having a conversation about random things I can relate to but he’s got a way of delivering it that just kills me. I’m not a prude, I love Chappelle and other more “R” rated acts but this guy (much like Hedberg) could perform at a NY comedy club one day and a church fundraiser the next and never change the act.

Have heard Nate's stuff over the years but never thought I'd see him host SNL. Def a real comedian so he crushed as expected.
Couldn't have happened to a better guy! So great to see the obvious nerves dissipate as he settled into his monologue. He cracks me up every single time.
Nate has a very David spade style humor. Story teller with lots of editorializing and under the breath kind of commentary that’s so funny. They both admire each other. What a great monologue.

I've only seen David Spade live once but it was the worst comedy show I've ever seen. It was truly awful. His opener was Brian Regan and he was absolutely hilarious.

Saw him at Prudential Center in Newark NJ. Such an incredible show. Laughing so much and all clean! Love his homeschool jokes as we are a homeschool family. His dad did about 10-15 minutes of a comedic magic show that was pretty good. He shared how proud he was of his son and that Nate has changed the family’s life. Just goes to show that real talent doesn’t need dirty jokes with cursing and sexual material. The whole place was on fire with laughter.

No idea who he is ... and this is how you make a FANTASTIC first impression to international audiences who probably don't know you .. Finally someone who's not scrambling on snl
I don't know if anyone on SNL staff read these comments, but IF YOU DO I want to say BEST SHOW in literally DECADES!!! And yes, I'm old (in case you hadn't figured that out from the ALL CAPS I tend to use). I've been watching since the very first show in 1975. I was a senior in high school, and my group of 5-6 core friends watched it EVERY Sat. night at one of the friends' parents' houses. My curfew was 1:00 am, and it took me 15 mins. to drive home when it was over. My mom would be waiting up to tell me I was GROUNDED. EVERY SINGLE Saturday night!! I kept telling her the show didn't end 'til 1 but she wouldn't budge ("1 o'clock is 1 O'CLOCK!!!). We really battled over that. My dad didn't really care and tried to stay out of it ("if your mother says be home by 1:00 am, TRY to be home by 1:00 am, but I understand you're wanting to watch the show 'til the end, and it only bothers ME if I get woken up!"). Anyway, I lost my mom about 5 months ago (just shy of her 91st birthday!) and my dad, 2 yrs ago (age 93!). I was their caregiver, right up to the very end. A few years ago I asked my mom if she remembered our weekly battle over SNL, and my being 15 mins. past curfew every week~ she chuckled once, and then said, deadpan; "I think I was perimenopausal". LMAO. I think she would have loved this episode with Nate Bargatze. Foo Fighters, maybe not so much. THANK YOU, SNL for (finally!) an episode as good as your first few seasons. It was worthy of being grounded for 😍
And what a dilemma we faced every Saturday night pre-VCR days: go out and party or watch Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, and SNL?

I wonder if others who are also familiar with his work noticed: To me he started off a bit soft, possibly nervous... but really got into his groove in the second half. Nice work!
I have been a fan for a while. I would not be surprised if this particular arc of his set is absolutely intentional. It helps us root for him. And even though it might be intentional, it still comes across as genuine. I feel like that is a big part of his brilliance.

Completely agree. His delivery was just a little off and not paced as well as his other specials. But then he hit his stride at the end and had me busting up 😂

I recently discovered Nate and he is refreshing. No cursing and vulgarity. "I'm from the 1900's" cracked me up. I can relate so much to what he says including reading books. Draw me a simple picture. Nate has a comedic gift.

Nate rocks!!! Not shocked after 15+ yrs watching him. Awww that widening of his eyes at the end, when he got to take a pause & realizing he had a fantastic set on freaking SNL. ❤❤❤

The best part about watching someone kill a monologue, is catching the in-house band in the background chuckling the whole time
It makes such a huge difference when the host delivering the monologue is a comedian. Nate knocked it out of the park.
