If you are into classical music, know some music theory, and get what Randy was doing when he wrote this music, it’s not a surprise at all. I can hear all of this in the actual music when I hear the original songs. It’s there in the structure and the chords. But yeah, piano and orchestral renditions really bring all of that out for everyone to notice. Randy was writing full blown classical compositions when he worked with Ozzy. He wasn’t a simple rock songwriter.

What Randy did in this song really does separate EVH and Randy. But it’s not so much the difference between great music and art, imo. Rather, the difference is between a (very creative) but simple guitarist/songwriter and a full blown musically gifted and very lateral composer (who played his compositions in metal/guitar form). In the end, Van Halen did not so much compose as he wrote basic pop songs with a very unusual guitar style. But Randy was creating actual sophisticated compositions with actual structure and deep musical properties. In a sense, yes, Randy was creating “art music” as they call it. That’s what we call classical music. It’s a higher form of music. An art form. While EVH was just doing traditional guitar work. Pentatonic blues. Mixolydian rock. Decent songs, but under the hood, nothing EVH did can musically compete with the stuff Randy was creating. It’s just a higher level of art that tends to survive the test of time better.
