  • I used these website as a guide but thought a Video-guide could also be usefull.
    www.fotomozaic.ro/artikel.php?...
    www.clubsnap.com/forums/canon/...
This is my first guide and also the first lens I take apart.
My english is crap and the result of the video the same. However, I decided to post it anyway, maybe it can help someone.
As I say in the video, this fix didn't repair my lens because I have another problem. But it should help with several other autofocus issues. My issue is that the lens can focus fine from infinity to near, but not the other way.
Please let us know if this fixed your lens or not!
    Sorry for the low volume.

He doesnt remind you to put the first part back on when you start to
reassemble. There is an image though of the small part reattached. This
should be apparent if you do it straight away but if you go away and
have a cuppa and come back you will probably be half way through
    reassembly before you realise.
Also when you take the Auto Focus switch off he does warn you to be
careful as its fragile. He does tell you when hes reassembling but
not enough emphasis was put on turning it to AF this time. The switch
is like a hair, if you breath on it the wrong way it will snap.
When there are very few people doing these videos you have to appreciate
someone trying, if you are aware of the switch (its a surprise it does
bust within a couple of days of using the lens to be honest) and dont
make any mistakes its a good guide. You dont have to be pushing hard to
snap this switch, you just need to have it in MF instead of turning it
to AF when reattaching. It seems like a string of people have had this
    problem, check below comments.
Im about to buy a wireless follow focus anyway and its mainly video I do
so its not such a problem, but would be a disaster for photograher,
infact AF is always very handy to get that precise focus when setting up
    a shot.

Mine is sometimes not focusing. If lens is pointed up, it won't turn focus past a certain point. Pointed down, works great. I'm pretty sure mine needs grease applied on the white plastic slider guides. Any thoughts on what type of grease to use?

This was just what I needed to fix my lens. The focus was stuck, probably due to a bit of dirt. Now it runs perfect. Thank you very much for your very fine and detailed video!!

I called my local camera repair shop and they wanted to charge $150-200 to repair this common problem. I've never taken anything apart that is this delicate. Your video was perfect! Instead of using my hand to flatten out that cylinder I used a flat capernter's square on the top and the bottom pressed against my flat desk. I used a carpenter's grip (Irwin Quick-grip) to hold that position for several minutes. I kept going at it until it was close to flat as possible. Your steps were exactly as you stated. Thank you again, my 50mm lens is working again. I also managed to clean out the tiny bits of sand I found in the outer slide and gear track from one of our many beach trips. Focus is a little smoother now too. I couldn't find any machine oil so I used Phil's bicycle grease (just a toothpick tip dab) on the sliding parts. Focus is smoother and couldn't be happier! Thank you, thank you Christofer!

I can not thank you enough for this video. I just fixed my 50 f1.4 so quickly. The guides were quite bent when I opened it up and it didnt feel like I was able to get them completely straight again. I put it back together expecting it to still be broken and wow, its fixed. Both manual and auto focus fully working. Your video couldn't be better, clear, concise and well structured. Thank you for sharing your skills, very much appreciated. :-)

Thank you so much for this video. Once I stripped the lens down as per your instructions, I could see the focus barrel was quite badly bent out of shape. I tried to fix it as described but it was too far out of alignment. I ordered a new one for €14 and replaced the old one. The focus scale easily peels off and can be reapplied to the new barrel, new barrels do not come with them. I put it all back together and its working perfectly. Your instructions are super easy to follow and the video is clear and well put together. Thank you again!🙏😀

Your tutorial worked great! It took me about 45 mins. In addition to flattening out the piece you showed, i filed down the part the guides sit in to slide easier.
Pro tip for everyone using this tutorial: make sure the ribbon you removed is inserted all the way and the plastic bit with the tabs on the back of the lens are properly seated or you will have aperture errors! :)

Thank you SO much for making this detailed video. I dropped my lens while on vacation and Canon suggested I have someone hand carry the lens back to the US and then ship it to New Jersey, which I thought was ridiculous. I am going to be away for months, so I decided to fix it myself and when I got to the end of disassembly, I saw the ring was bent. After pressing it back into shape, the lens now functions! The motor is a bit slower than before but it will keep my photography going while on my trip.
One note: At the 5:40 mark you remove a rectangular metal piece but do not remind viewers to replace it when reassembling. Maybe you can add this as a note in your written description.
Thanks again for the tutorial! X

You're a bloody legend! Thanks so much. The issue mine had was as if the focus ring wasn't gripping, like there was a slipping cog inside. Once I was able to locate the cogs I just jiggled them around a bit, and maybe that fixed it, or just opening it up did something? Those first screws were a nightmare to undo, so my palm is very sore from the screw driver. Thank you again! You've saved me hundreds of dollars!

I couldn't get the ring completely planar with pressing it on a table, so I used a fine wood rasp for additional corrections. If you do this, you probably better make sure to have some compressed gas at hand to remove all the shavings.

Hi Cristofer, fixed mine too, it was very badly bended, even not able to bend it back by hand! Used an oval pincet, to bend the ring back in shape and used some fine sandpaper to make the edges of the groove smooth again. Greased it with some white grease on an ear cleaning stick. Auto focus works fast and acurate again! Thanks!

Excellent video. I had also like many here bought a second hand lens which looked like someone had tried to fix. Was getting stuck at .45. Also great tip as I had to deal with stripped screws is duct tape on the screwdriver sticky side on the screw head and go slow. :)

My old lens quit focusing, and even was stuck so manual didn't work. Using this excellent walk through, I was able to get the manual focus working again.
I can hear the motor chirping for a fraction of a second each time I try to focus, so I'm assuming that it's pretty much fried.
I didn't have aperture control at first, but after a comment a few above, I saw that re-seating the ribbon can fix it, and it did! I still don't have auto focus, but at least I'm not stuck at f/1.4

  • @cjoe6908

Thanks a lot. Although I don't fix my lenses myself, this vid also helps because I can learn here about where the weakness is and I can better protect my lenses. My 50/1.4 went down a few times I guess the problem is the same piece that is mentioned here deformed and then caused the motor to overwork and breakdown. So my protection method is the put a hood onto my new lens as much as possible to shield that piece from bumps that may cause the deformation. Thanks again.

PLEASE READ! 1) FOR BEGINNERS: THANK YOU! This worked for me and I have no experience disassembling anything. 2) I just needed to buy a $10 precision tool kit on amazon 3) I messed up putting the connection back in place and when I reassembled everything and took a photo, the camera said “communication between the camera and lens is faulty.” I had to disassemble again and connect it correctly. Then somehow when I closed the lens back on the camera it wasn’t aligning and the lens release button wasn’t working and the auto focus wasn’t working. I had to twist really hard and the lens came out. I did the entire thing again and by some miracle... it worked. I can’t believe it. Took 1.5 hours but saved $$$. THANK YOU AGAIN!

+Christofer Cederberg just an FYI to people using this method - I had to fix the lens once again and have realised that tightening the white guides for the focus ring too much can also cause the focus to get stuck. So make sure you tighten the screws so they are flush, but not so much that the focus ring feels solid and difficult to move.

Decided to give it one more go, took out the crappy tube and threw it far away from me, squished the crap out of the original one they way he does with his palm, put it all back together and hey presto, it fecking works. IT WORKS!!!!!!! Autofocus is really crap for some reason, tried it on two different cameras, but it keeps hunting erratically never stopping but i don't use it for video i use it completely manual. So glad to have this wonderful little (poorly made) lens back in circulation again and i bought a lens hood for it and it will never be off it from here on. Side note, the gears were rather stiff so I thought maybe the lubrication had dried and added a very small amount to the gears (plastic and rubber safe) to assist it, this may be why the AF is freaking out because it's maybe shorting something. Cheers for the vid.

Thanks for the help! I dropped my lens and it stopped focusing. I fixed the ring, but it still was sticking at some points. I ended up leaving one of the 3 white sliders off and it works... we'll see how it stands up

I dropped my lens 6 years ago at Comic Con. Since then its really hard to adjust focus. Thank you for posting this video, I am going to try taking it apart and seeing if I can save it, if not I am probably just going to toss it.

This really works guys I bought a 50mm 1.4 on craigslist and it had this focus issue....I was about to get rid of it till I tried this..and surprisingly it actually works...only thing Is pay close attention to when he says be careful...and apply a lot of pressure from the start so you don't strip screws...I came close a couple times

Glad I could help you! Always sucks when you buy something used and it isn't what the seller said it would be.
You're right about the screws. Be sure to use the right kind of screwdriver with tight fit and be carefull not to strip them.

I also had to redo this procedure twice. I did not correctly inserted the electrical connector and as a consequence I got aperture control problems (it got stuck in my basic tests at F22).
I figured that it might be the connector, reopened the lens re-inserted it (fully in - I could almost swear that it is now even more inside than what is seems to be on the video) and it is now working as expected.
Thanks for you very helpful video:)

thanks your guide is very helpful. Now my lense focus again. I didn't noticed anything was bend, but maybe only a little something is required to produce this focus issue. It is a bit of a shame Canon uses such a fault-prone mechanism.

For people that get the stuck aperture blades after re assembly ( Everything is dark ) - I just had this happen to me, dis assemble the lens and reconnect the long ribbon that you through through the lens seen at 8:33 . Then re assemble and should be all sorted. @christopher Cederberg , thank you for your detailed video, it saved me a lot of money :)

Thank you Christofer It fixed my focusing problem after i dropped my camera face down. as a tip if the lens wont go straight after pressing check the high point and tap it with the handle of a metal knife whilst holding the blade it had just enough power to knock it back to shape, When ressambling 8.49 on video replace the three white tabs and the turn the white focus dial to see if the cameramoves soothly. if not check the diagonal groove for minor deformitys tht stop the white tabs moving smoothly. Than you agin it saved me a lot of money in replcing it or sending my lens foe repair.

I have just one question. It fix my AF I was able to focus just between 1.0m and 2.6m. Now my AF works perfectly, but when I am using manual focusing ring, it is still sticky and I have to use little bit of force to move, but after that I can´t focus properly, because it´s not smooth. May you help me with this?

    • @freddebed
      @freddebed 7 лет назад

Hello Jakub. i have no camera repair expertise but from what i saw when disassembling my lens was that you problem may be caused by damage to the manual focus ring as seen at point 13 seconds in the video when Christofer removes it. Look at the teeth cogs on the inside of the dial/ ring for damage or missing teeth, look at the white dial (revealed at 15seconds)that the ring rotates for damage. See if you can reverse the ring when replacing it you mmight have replced it th wrong way or the other side of ring might not be damaged.. at point 18s you can see the white dial. roll this with your fing and see if the focus changes both ways. f so you know tht the focus ring is the problem. otherwise i dont know..Good luck.!!

I used your video to disassemble and clean my lens a little speck of dust.
I think I can help you as AF: I noticed that in your video, you put the little switch to the left and the AF button to AF. On my machine did not work the AF, then disassembled again and put it to right, it worked!
    Again, thank you.

    Mr Cederberg:
Thank you for your video instruction. It is very helpful for me and I have subscribed your channel. I hope that you can give me some hints on my lens problem.
I have a Canon EF 50mm / 1.4 lens, which is exactly same as this one in your video. I accidentally dropped it onto the ground a few months ago and then found that I couldn't use auto or manual focus anymore. About a month ago, I fixed the problem by watching your video clip and the lens resumed auto and manual focus functions. But unfortunately, it worked not smooth and sometimes the auto focus stopped working and I had to switch to the manual focus,. Once I could use manual focus, the auto focus recovered. About one week ago, the lens stops working and I can't use either auto or manual focus. I tried again to fix the problem as the last time I did by repeating your procedure, however, I failed and cannot even turn the lens manual focus barrel. The manual focus barrel seems stuck by something. I had to dissemble it again but couldn't find any problem. Could you please provide your insight from your experience? It would be very helpful for me to find the problem. Thank you in advance!
    Doug

very helpful. The sliders were sticking, however I made it worse when I followed the advice by pressing the ring on a flat surface which coimpressed one of the slider grooves, so had to reopen by gently prising.. be carefull if you press on the ring to remove the deformation as described in video..... you can press too hard which squeeze the slider grooves too much which restricts the lugs from smooth operation... making it tight and thus manual and auto will not work. However all resolved eventually

I'm pretty nervous about attempting this, but after my lens took a fall causing the AF to become faulty, I think its going to be my only option as repairs are way more than the lens cost. This is a great video and I look forward to trying this out. Fingers crossed for me!

Actually it's not as hard as it looks. Just have something to organize the screws in. I used a old empty assortmentbox for small screws. Put screws in one appartment together with a little paper with instructions of where the screws should sit in the lens and in which order they should sit.
