One of the best albums. No mediocre songs in this album at all.
Very underrated album
@@DIRECTORMRSCOTT not really underrated lol
I really love this album! I can't say it's a 5, but a Solid 4.75!
💯
@@chune4383 not really but you’d be suprised how many people havent listened to this album
Common and Ye were in their bag on this album!!
Big time
And: Finding Forever!
Big facts!!!
Dont forget Dilla!
I’m sorry man, this was a J-Dilla album. He had a bigger involvement in the production, hence dedicating his Grammy to J-Dilla
Be (Intro) is one of my favourite songs of all time, the way Kanye done that beat and built it up from the beginning adding all the layers is simple but genius.
That intro may well be the greatest opening track in hip hop history, it's so good.
same. been on my rotation since the day the album came out. absolute classic
I literally cried the first time I heard it!
Be if you never saw the video, is a love letter to the goat
Michael Jeffery Jordan
It was filmed in the house Jordan was raised in before the family moved to NC, in Flatbush Brooklyn NYC
You see photos of a young air Jordan as a kid
It has cameos from Jordan brand athletes
Carmelo Anthony
Terrell Owens
Quinton Richardson
And served as the soundtrack for the Jordan 20th Anniversary celebrations in 2005
This album is a MASTERPIECE.
YES 👏🏽
1M time
The production is perfect
Back when Kanye was "using" backpack reapers lol
❤
The BE intro is amongst the greatest Hip-Hop intros of all time. BE is a classic from top to bottom.
Mos Def - ''Black on Both Sides'' is nice to review too ! A real classic album with great intelectual lyrics, because he worked in a bookstore.
Its funny you mentioned this album because this was one that got away from me back in the day. Missed so many chances to buy it and I've never listened to it fully
Facts. Love that album
So much to appreciate on that album!
I was in seventh grade when this album dropped. I remember the day it leaked. I had a teacher who would play Common in class when we were taking tests. It was the song Come Close off Electric Circus on loop for the entire period.
I burned a copy of Be and gave it to him after class. To this day I’ve never seen anyone that happy. The only teacher I remain in touch with and consider a close friend. He denies it but I’m certain my grades immediately improved.
Classic Album.
11 months late but love this comment; deserves more likes
😅 this is awesome
In 2006 I was 19 and was shot 5 times in LA. After I healed up I went to Ohio up in the mountains to visit family and get away for awhile. My uncle said listen to this album, it was BE. Fell in love with the Good Vibes. It's Your World is my favorite song from this album.
God Bless You Both. I think it's awesome what you and your Pop have going on.
Respectfully, Joshua David
I'm glad you survived that, fam! I was living out LA, between Slauson & Western when this album dropped & I remember playing this & The Documentary album around the same time! 🙏🏾💪🏾
@@exf20 yes indeed. The documentary was 2005 I remember that entire time
@@exf20 thank you btw
@joshuadavidxplicit-beatz6118 yup, they both dropped in 05. And you’re absolutely welcome my brother.
'Like Water for Chocolate' by Common is a very nice and underrated album!
Amazing project
It's one of my FAVS from Common. I agree that it's underrated. It's a classic. I like pops outro's at the end of this and all his other albums.
This albums production, by Kanye, was inspired by A Tribe Called Quest’s - The Low End Theory. You guys definitely should check out that album.
The Be (intro) is set as my alarm clock so i can wake up uplifted every morning.
Both Common’s Be and Common’s Finding Forever albums I can hear in its entirety, not skip a single track.
-Eric Benet is a singer
-Sampling was basically the beginning of hip-hop as we know it today. Started with two copies of the same record at a party in New York in the 70s and people dancing to DJ Kool Herc repeating the break(instrumental break down) of the two records manually... so begins the art of sampling, so begins hip-hop... later to have MCs rhyme over those breaks at parties....
One of the Midwest’s dopest. Shotout to the Chi.
Your Dad had it on the head. Common is definitely a Poet. The consideration, thoughtfulness, rhyme scheme, content and STORY TELLING. He's fantastic.
His mother, Dr. Mahalia Hines, served as a Chicago public school principal for almost 20 years and was THE instrumental player in his life.
Testify is my favourite! If you watch the music video it seems like he was more tricked by his woman. She’s putting on this act crying asking to testify but at the end she grins and leaves the courtroom
You both may already know this, but Hip Hop (like most authentically "Black American" genres of music) is essentially poor people's music, which is why it resonates globally. Consider that the art form was created in early 1970s New York City, shortly after integration & the Civil Rights movement. This was a time when white Americans fled the inner cities for the suburbs. This exodus (to escape newly integrated Black people) led to severe urban blight in the urban core. This was also a time when industrialization (which financially sustained uneducated Black Americans) also left these urban areas. Money dried up or was diverted away from Black areas to the suburbs and white communities. As a result, these Black communities were cut off from many things, not the least of which was music programs in the schools.
Simultaneously, access to New York's music scene was largely cut off from young, poor, Black & Latin inner city kids. This choke point is what led to the use of general household items for musical expression. (pots, pans, buckets, and yes... TURNTABLES.) Sampling (however you think of it) was poor people's way of creating music while responding to conditions that might've destroyed other communities. Out of that struggle to create, an entire global music revolution was born and is now the dominant musical form worldwide.
That's why sampling is so widely used in Hip Hop. It's literally part of the DNA.
This! Thank you for your detailed and necessary response. Many people miss the amount of creativity & genius required to create an exquisite something out of almost nothing. That we as Black folk ALWAYS find a way to take what is done to us negatively and turn it into a positive is, for me, the hallmark of my community’s resilience, power, and love.
@@colettewalker381 Respect!
Excellent comment.
@@mintyfreshfilms Respect!
Well said.
No skips on this whole album! Classic!!!
CLASSIC!!!!!
One of my personal favorites. Kanye and j dilla production is magnificent, and common is just so soothing as a rapper.
Soothing is the perfect word! Dilla works magic.
Be is a masterpiece 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is my favorite Common album and the one that made me go back into his catalog. No skips and the production/instrumentation throughout is outstanding. I loved it upon release (8th grade for me) and have revisited it at least 2-3 times a year since
Love it.... .(Faithful) "Calling her like I'm chirping her" is referring to those old nextel phones. They worked similar to a walkie talkie/2 way radio. And they would make a chirping sound when you pressed the button to talk... people with nextel phones would "chirp" each other
Wow! I didn’t know that. Thanks ☺️
@@frontroom ruclips.net/video/FyFOaDtKdRY/видео.html
I think your dad would love to watch the Rhythm Roulette series to witness how hip hop music is sampled to create the beats. 9th Wonder is one of my favorite episodes but there are some excellent ones.
I’ve watched the 9th wonder episode over a dozen times, it never gets old! Good suggestion.
@@frontroom Big K.R.I.T.'s is excellent as well
Thes one from people under the stairs has a great episode as well.
Large pro was the best he used all three records on one beat
Good call! EL-P's episode was pretty dope as well imo
I think common had his pops on almost every album. He usually has him talking on the outros. Great voice. RIP Lonnie Lynn.
I wish you guys played the part where the kids say what they wanna be when they group up. So beautiful.
Common is very underrated. You should check out his freestyle on LA Leakers he did last year. Also check out I used to love H.E.R.
He is not underrated he is well respected
What makes your channel interesting, is your pops gives a chance to all types of rap tunes. Even the ones I wouldn’t play in front of my parents for a second lol! I Haven’t even started to watch yet, and I actually feel confident in leaving a comment… Contrary to most of what you subject him to, I’m sure your dad will genuinely love this album. He’s a soulful guy and this is just good music… I grew up on all kinds of rap music, and still appreciate all types. As I’ve gotten older though, I mainly listen commom, Mos def, talib, early Kanye, lupe, roots, dead prez etc. As I’ve gotten older, i like a more positive message most of time.. I’m sure your dad will love this one, and i look forward to watching the review
if you like this channel just watch turning tables. these guys are just parroting what turning tables did a year earlier.
Yusuf Hawkins was a Black teenager (16) killed in a heinous hate crime in East New York in1989. The gang of white kids responsible for his death were hired by a member of the Gambino family.
His Dad's name is Lonnie Lynn. He had a brief NBA career has been an inspiration and appeared on a few Common songs.
I like when you guys do the whole album. I think it gives a better understanding of the artist. Great reaction👍
I remember when that happened. I was 14 living in The Bronx. I’ll never forget that for the rest of life. 🙏🏼
Except he says "My Man Yusef" which is referring to Malik Yusef who's Common and Kanye's friend.
@@supadave422 Thanks! Didn’t even realize he said this initially.
@@supadave422 could be a double entendre.
Like some above stated. He's talking about his childhood friend Malik Yusef. Common also makes reference to Yusuf in his memoir.
Your Dad is that dude! He appreciates every string, lyric and beat.
I knew Dad would love Common. J Dilla and Common together are untouchable
kanye too? he produced it all besides 2
IMO this album is a masterpiece, a straight-up classic. As a Chicagoan, this album represents the struggles of the Southside so well.
the intro is still one of my all time fav "songs" by Common. So.Good
This is one my favorite albums of any genre. It's such an easy, enjoyable listen in every way. It's a breath of fresh air among the much more hardcore rap I tend to listen to, especially for the time it was released
I love Common! “Come Close” will always be super special to my husband and I 😊
was drawn to this album as a 13 year old and was in love with the sound but as a 31 year old male this album hits me a different way .. beautiful
I know what you mean. The more I listen to this album the more I love it. - Kai’s dad
"Love Is" & "The Corner" are my two favorites from this album! Hearing "The Corner" for the first time... whew too good! 🔥 Common is royally underrated, imo.
I love they don't know with John Legend, that is so damn smooth!
I still get chills with that intro. I used to play this whole album and not skip a single track. That’s how you know it was amazing. My fav song is probably Faithful. This is a classic album. I knew pops would love it!
One of my favorite albums! Classic!
Was 20 yrs old when I bought this album, now 37 yrs old...time flies for sure!! Love the reactions young homie! 🔥
literally the most underrated album and underrated artist. but how? it’s COMMON SENSE.
One of my favorite all time albums… classic start to finish
You know, it’s so good to get to listen to these great albums I remember from years ago, and to have it playing in the back ground while I’m working or doing chores around the house, and hearing a father and son with a great relationship together discuss said album like I’m sat in the room with them
Glad you enjoyed, it, Blaze0303. Thanks for watching. - Kai’s dad
I know you guys already did "Ex factor" by Lauryn Hill. I'm interested to see how you two would feel about the whole album. "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is in my top 5 albums of all time.
Definitely one of Common’s best work. Remembering this growing up in the hood as a kid in 2005
First time I heard this album was driving solo to Atlanta GA from VA....maaan, I must've run "Be" back 5 times before I could move on, what a perfect intro song to an amazing album.
Oh! Such a GOOD time re-living this album through this video! "Be" is one of my favorite projects ❤️
Glad you liked it, Camille! - Kai’s dad
(Scratching)“It’s almost like it’s talking.” Your dad is getting it now. You guys have come a long way. You guys have helped me reconnect with a lot of the hip hop I used to listen to and appreciate it even more.
Common's DJ, DJ Dummy, is one of the best to do it... check him out in the old DMC DJ Championships
These videos are so refreshing to see and hear your dad's reaction of hearing some of my favorite records for the first time as well as the see his facial expressions 😅 I love this channel. This is a great way to honor Hip hop what you and your dad are doing is what me and my brother use to do together and it's beautiful. Keep it up
❤️🥺
This album embodied that Chicago feel.
World ❤
Was 22 when this masterpiece came out.. Excellent choice 👌 Love seeing you and your Dad groove to this classic!
I’m glad you all enjoyed this classic, hopefully you all get around to some his other albums, particularly Resurrection and Finding Forever.
I've been waiting on this one. What an amazing album
Kyle I TRULY love how you introducing your dad to different types of rap & getting his reactions. 👍🏽🙏🏽💙😊
One of my favorite MC’s and albums of all time. He’s hip hop in person … dude is amazing
Wow! I have commend the both of you guys because this was one of the best album reviews I've seen yet. Just an overall insightful critique of that project. I love the way you guys dissect all of the nuances from the lyrics and the production. Very well done gentlemen. 🙏🏾
Hi guys Kyle thanks for sharing that’s my first time hearing this song 🎵 it’s very nice I love it. 👍🏽😊
I've been waiting for you to put him onto Common finally 🙌🏽
Do 'Love of my Life' Erykah Badu feat. Common 🤍
This album helped me understand more so of what Hip-Hop could present and represent.
Love what you guys are doing. Keep going. 👊🏾
This was great! Beginning to end. Kai thanks for sharing your dad with us. His reactions, the chemistry you two have and the love you both have for music... is just awesome. Fantastic review!!!
Thank you so much!!
Be (intro) is by far one of my absolute favorites off of that album.. Common is a living legend
This is the rawest reaction channel I have ever found. You guys are killing it. Great work. We get to listen to entity songs with you, because you don't interrupt. Love your feedback. Great job guys. Common is one of the most lyrically advanced people ever.
Note to Pops: I relate to your style of parenting so much! I have two 19 years old myself and I just love watching the way you vibe with your son. It's refreshing.
Pops, Common's dad, is at the end of all his albums.
these keep getting better and better. Great work.
Common did a concert with the Houston Symphony. He’s one of the few hip hop artists that could carry that. It was amazing.
Awesome reaction! One of my all-time fav albums. You should react to Black Star- Respiration (Feat. Common).
I listen to that track like twice a week..
I love this record. When it came out, there were a lot of common fans who really shat on this record talking bout oh he's bad now he's changed whatever whatever but i neeeeever thought that. i looooove. nice choice! again, i commend your taste in hip hop my friend.

Love this album. One of those albums that I seem to appreciate in new ways throughout different stages in my life, and the production is timeless. I'm with Kai on 'Love Is'...one of my favorite Common songs for sure.
Classic album. Perfect album. Amazing reaction.
Faithful is one of the greatest hip hop songs ever made 💯
YES!!!
Been watching for a while now and this one is making me subscribe to the Patreon! I absolutely love this album and cant wait to here your Dad's perspective on 2 tracks in Particular; "Faithful" and "Testify"....
You guys stumbled onto something amazing here with this channel, I absolutely love the perspective and appreciate the thoughtful you both put into your commentary!
Bro I love y'all keep the content coming you guys are great.
Dude you are choosing some of the greatest hip hop artists to react to, this is magic. I remember when I went to the record store and purchased this album, the rnb/funk/soul/ rap vibes throughout it is SO good. Common to me is one of the goats... conscious hip hop music at its best.
❤ Word!
Pops was trying to say Common speaks to the urban realities without wallowing in it, and even finds the beauty in it. It still manages to be positive and uplifting music despite some of the themes and subject matter.
Love this album with a passion! Glad you guys covered it. Hope to see some of Most Def' Black on Both Sides since that's one of my favorites 😆
Thank you for reviewing this album. Aside from the honest reaction, I wanted to just comment watching pops nod his head, step to the beat then seeing you almost do the same thing on the side of him was amazing, passing of the torch if you will. These are beautiful moments. Just enjoying each others company, good music, and authentic interaction. Kuddos!👊🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾
Thanks, Bryan. We are having a great time and glad you are enjoying, too. - Kai’s dad
Be is a top tier rap album for sure. I’d say around my favorite top 5
Finding Forever needs to be reacted to as well!
I was living in Grand Rapids MI blasting this album from my Jeep. Heavy heavy rotation! #chitown #comsense
You all should do Bilal's album "1st Born Second". Sooo good
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but noticed your dad really loved Illmatic. And Common is on record saying he wanted to make an album as close to Illmatic as possible, and that was Be.
the streets needed this 🏆
One of my favorite albums of all-time. I remember when and where I was when I purchased the album. No skips. Be (Intro) is by far the best intro ever!
This album changed my LIFE 🔥🙌🏾💿
Beautiful album, real love.
The nostalgia is strong with this album. Amazing how lucky i was to live through this must when it came out.
Underrated common album one of my favorites nice reaction 👍
The music video for Testify is awesome too its pretty much a mini movie with Taraji P. Henson and some other popular actors from that time.
One of my favorite albums!
I would say watch the video for a better understanding of Testify. I think it’s just her being smart enough to double cross him and still make it seem like she is sticking by his side
Excited for this one!
Common is a poet! Love his music 😂
Going to see Common on tour for this album is the first time, in person, I ever saw someone faint from seeing an artist. Was at the House of Blues here in Chicago, and the intro started. You hear Common start "yeh yeh yeh" and as soon as he started to get on stage, this lady just fainted. Hit the floor hard. Her friends had to get her off the floor and out the crowd. I dunno if she came two towards the back or ever got back in. But it was amazing because to most Chicagoans, Common is just Common. A mad cool guy, that remembers a lot of ppl he meets and real personable. I've met him a couple times. Real genuine. Love his success.
So cool that you're showing your dad Common much more thoroughly than some more "mainstream" rappers like Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, etc. He's such a refreshment in the rap world.
I think he'd love "I used to love H.E.R."
Cheers to both of you!
Thanks, Jakov!
I remember ever moment of the first time i heard this album. I went to the Barnes and Noble with my newborn and get a signed CD and stared at it the entire play then played again. Exceptional album.
Now they gotta listen to Eric Bennett lol. They gotta choices of "georgie porgie" or "love don't love me" or "pretty baby"
Friend or Foe - 8ball & MJG, and too many different CaniBus cuts - nice show gentlemen. keep up the master content
They Say is such an underrated Common song especially on this album. My favorite on it by far.
Eric Benne had a hit called “Georgie Porgie” you might like it.
Great review young man as a 48 year old hip hop head you make me proud with your selections one love
Love seeing the evolution of pops head nod… we see you out here OG!
