It is impressive that Line 6 keeps adding value to our products (last one is a huge example) and do not charge for it. This was already a key factor to recommend their products. Now, with these good and versatile cabs and great sounding factory presets.. there is no reason to not having a Helix product. Great job Line 6!
This new update makes the HX stuff far more appealing to me than it was previously. The ability to tweak the cabs and having good factory presets are both huge improvements imo. If I was looking at buying a modeler today I would definitely consider the HX.
Did the factory reset and followed all your instructions and all seems to be working perfectly. I agree the new factory presets are very usable. I just had a play around with the 07A Cali 1V Rhythm and with all the effect set to on . . there are some really nice clean tones and some Andy Summers type sounds if anyone is looking for a quick fix of his sounds.
Thanks John - I’ve dabbled with helix but struggled to dive fully into it and yours videos have really helped me understand the possibilities and more importantly give it a proper chance!! 👍
I have always appreciated how companies like L6 take care of and support their products. Can you imagine the Helix technology is 7 years old? And still alive and kicking. Look at Mooers, Nux, Hotones- they may be great on paper but become obsolete as soon as you buy them. This is the difference between boys and men :)
Glad to see I'm not the only one who left the plastic film over the main screen and the EXP pedal screen. Haha. Thanks for the tip on getting the new factory presets. I always wondered how to do that.
I rather got into the fun of making my own presets, often using John's work as a starting point and then tweaking to suit my guitar. One of the nicest things about the HX Stomp is making the sounds your own. As has been demonstrated many times on this channel the possibilities are vast - it's like getting a new piece of gear every time I fire up HX Edit !!!! Those Blooper like patches using reverse echo and glitch delays are astonishing.
Great intro playing, sounds fantastic. One thing that would have been very useful is to have recorded little phrases/licks before the upgrade so you could play them again after the upgrade. That way you'd have a before/after of the presets. Regardless, the presets sound pretty good to me.
John - I have been trying to like single coil guitars. GAS created such craziness, I bought and sold 3 core Silver Sky's. Please suggest some models and/or pickups that will give me both the slinky Strat tone and some nice rich higher gain tones. What am I missing? What are the main parameters you concentrate on when dialing in tones on the Helix? I never really liked the 7.25" SS radius but if I buy another single coil, I would love to find a guitar with noiseless pickups that still sound good. I've even considered getting a P90 Revstar and installing some Lindy Fralin humless replacements to get me somewhere in between. For my band, I play my #1 2004 PRS Custom 22 w/coil split (re-wired to eliminate the rotary dial - Paul's only mistake in my opinion). Any suggestions on pups or guitars? The Helix has retaliated against the competition with quite an impressive update.Cheers.
Major props to Line 6 for moving to IR files for their cab sims. I still prefer some third party IR files, but the Line 6 new cabs are very usable and a big improvement over the previous cabs. The new presets are improvements - I'd be more tempted to use them. I never used any of the original factory presets. Great video, as usual.
they didnt "move" to IRs. the original ones are IRs as well its just that before you couldnt move the mic in 3D space so it was harsh sounding when you put the mic in the center of the cone. But the process to "model" an amp and mic is the same. they had to "shoot" and IR to capture the mic and cab in each of those hundreds of positions.
@@sjsphotog Is there a source for this information (ie that Line 6 has always used IR files for their cabs?). Because I read it wasn't IR files, it was their own proprietary method. Neither of our opinions are evidence. I do want to know the truth.
When I first got my HX Stomp, I didn't find the Factory Presets very useful. Now, with the new 3.50 Update, Cab Engine, etc., I'll be giving them another look. The Factory Presets take up slots 1A-42C. If I have "my" Presets in any of those numerical slot locations, they will be automatically overwritten, right? But, if for instance my Presets are in slots 43A and higher, will they remain untouched when restoring the new Factory Presets? Will we be getting a new 3.50 User Manual? So far, I can't find one. 🤷 Thanks
A heads up to those with Snapshot based presets that are based on amp+cab that they are going to reload after updating. One of my main presets used Snapshots to change amp settings to achieve higher gain, etc, instead of using additional effects blocks. I lost those parameter changes after reloading...they just happened to use cabs that are affected by the firmware update (another trusted RUclipsr said some of the cabs can't be tweaked like the majority of the others affected by the firmware update). Maybe my preset was a fluke...but maybe not. But changes no longer occur with Snapshots-based changes in the amp settings.
JNC - the Instructions from Line 6 only mentioned Factory #1 that needed to be unchecked. Did they actually do any updates to Factory #2? I only unchecked #1 when I updated my LT today. Strange L6 would have gotten this wrong in their instructions.??
Update went great but 1 question on the update complete notice it says to factory reset using 9 and 10 but your video says 7and 8 which is correct cheers
I play with HX stomp, use only the default presets, some of them slightly tweaked, does the UG to 3.5 improve the sound of existing default presets and why?
Hey man great video! I can't seem to get them onto my hx stomp it just has the old ones? I have successfully updated to 3.5 but I must be doing something wrong. Can you do a video on how to import them into the HX Stomp?
Thanks god, great Helix presets. I never used them since they were sooo disappointing. Does it mean we have the neural dsp quality presets? It seems like it’s the case. But seriously, why did Line 6 waited so long?
I bought one a couple of years ago and it sounded so bad to me (particularly the gain presets) that I sold it a week later. I probably should have given it more of a go but I'm a plug in and play type guy and I don't like fiddling with things a lot so I just couldn't be bothered. I may give one another go with a small powercab now I'm a little more patient than I was
So, if I understand correctly: by following the update procedure with a factory reset, we should have the new factory presets? Sorry, but this part of the video is not very clear... Another thing: it would have been more interesting to make a video before and after to really see the differences.
I didn't get the last update. So I don't have any of the amps, effects etc from the last update. Should I do the last update THEN do 3.5. Or can I just skip the last update and do the 3.5 ? If I do that will I lose out on the amps and effects from the update before 3.5??? Thank you for any info regarding this question. I don't have any Rev Amps for example. If I just do the 3.5. Will I get the Rev amp from the previous update or will I lose out?? Thanks again for any info!!!
Thanks for making me aware of how to get the new factory presets. I did a successful update, but I didn't realise I had updated the new updates with my own original factory presets - if that makes sense?
@@AlexVonCrank I imagine there are quite a few players out there that maybe don't even realise that they are running the old presets? Thanks to John for this one. 👍

Hi there. I am confused with the “restore from back up” after factory reset. Is the restore from default really necessary when you don’t want to use those old factory presets?
Do it and you get the new presets, plus you can copy any patch from a back up so easy, I have never done it before but I did this time and I would recommend it. Copy from back up is in the edit.
If after doing the factory reset you restored your backup/setlist the new presets would have been replaced by whatever you had before. Also some of them have the same/very similar names as the old presets, you should check mainly the cab blocks to see which ones the preset uses.
