    Thanks for putting these out. As someone who has been wanting to get into overlanding for a few years now but hasn’t had the time or resources to do so this is great for me to see how far people in south western Ontario have to go in order to find a place to go. I would be interested in knowing when and if you guys have a newbie weekend or just a easy trail ride and what I would need to do to prepare for it (when allowed)

      Our pleasure! I was really hoping to put on more events and runs this past year through our Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/634437553357942/?ref=pages_profile_groups_tab&source_id=1452859228346106) unfortunately 2020 and so far 2021 seem to have other plans. But once we can start meeting up again we will be posting the events over there.

    I walked into the local mnr district office and asked if they could help me get ahold of a crown land map around my area and they were no help. I was walking out of the building and I was stopped by a fellow hunting who informed me about this app.

    • @thebackroadadventurer
      @thebackroadadventurer  3 года назад

      Yea that’s pretty much it. Some roads/trails may be closed depends on what the crown land parcel is designated for, if they aren’t they should be treated the same as any other road allowance. As far as shooting goes, pretty much all crown land parcels allow the discharge of a firearm, unless stated in the policy report (assuming you are being safe and have a suitable backstop).

      I ABSOLUTELY know what you mean. My goal has always been to help educate people on responsible backcountry recreation. But unfortunately some people just don’t care. To add to the problem there just isn’t enough funding going into enforcement and investigation into the people that abuse our public lands. I’m Hopefully that as crown land gains in popularity and more people bring the problems to light, more people will come out as stewards of public land and help educate as well. I was definitely happy to see that this year (despite everything that it was) I saw the most cleanups of popular campsites and access points, hopefully trend this continues

    Can i hunt small game on crown land all year round? Some people tell me yes. But i cant figure out for sure. Like grouse,squirrels etc the smallest of games?

    • @thebackroadadventurer
      @thebackroadadventurer  8 месяцев назад

      Small game has a set season. Typically starting in September and ending in December. Some WMUs have a slightly longer season for some game animals. The majority of small game will require you to have both a hunting license and a small game license, along with a PAL if you are hunting with a firearm. Additionally, Wild Turkeys fall under small game and require additional tags as well as a small game license for both their spring and fall seasons.
      I’d highly recommend thoroughly reading through the 2024 hunting regulations.

    Hi - wondering how to get maps showing crown land. I have talked to MNRF and was passed around to 5 different phone numbers and extensions. All ended up with me saying the same thing- "no, I got this number from that number". I don't hunt anymore so just solo with the dogs camping or taking the grandkids. It would be eastern Ontario. Thanks very much!
    One of the commenter below mentioned the new app doesn't show crown land anymore.

    • @thebackroadadventurer
      @thebackroadadventurer  3 года назад +1

      I haven’t had maps printed for me before, but I’ve heard (at least pre COVID) that any local MNR office can print off maps upon request. I usually print off small sections and the policy reports for the areas I’m heading to directly off the crown land atlas.
      As far as crown land not being shown anymore. It still works for me, maybe the other person let their subscription lapse.

      @@thebackroadadventurer we always hunted on friends and their neighbours land so we were pretty lucky that way. The occasional farmer would call us for coyotes then let us hunt.
      I know of a couple of crown land islands in the area but the atlas doesn't show them for some reason.
      Thanks for replying! Take care and have a good one.

    Is there any land where you can go for target shooting practice.

    • @thebackroadadventurer
      @thebackroadadventurer  Год назад

      Typically target shooting with NON-RESTRICTED rifles and shotguns is allowed on the majority of crown land with the exception of Crown Game Preserves (you can not even be in possession of a firearm on those parcels), but these will be clearly marked on the crown land atlas. The best advice I can give is that when your looking at the policy report is to make sure hunting is allow on that parcel, keeping in mind that south of the French and Mattawa rivers some municipalities still have “no Sunday gun hunting” laws in effect, my understanding is that this also applies to discharging a firearm in general. Unfortunately it seems that a small number of municipalities are also adding “no targeting shooting laws” but that seems to mainly be in response to residential areas being built near some very small parcels of crown land in Southern Ontario. It is probably going to take a bit of trial and error to find a parcel that’s actually going to be suitable and safe for target shooting.

      Typically target shooting is allowed on the majority of crown land with the exception of Crown Game Preserves (you can not even be in possession of a firearm on those parcels), but these will be clearly marked on the crown land atlas. Almost 100% of the time, if hunting is allow on that parcel, then target shooting is also allowed. Another thing to consider is that recently it seems that a small number of municipalities are also adding “no targeting shooting bylaws” but that seems to mainly be in response to residential areas being built near some very small parcels of crown land in Southern Ontario. It is probably going to take a bit of trial and error to find a parcel that’s actually going to be suitable and safe for target shooting

    Hey I'm not trying to burst your bubble but in Southern Ontario there is some Crown land near Kitchener Cambridge Paris and stuff like that I've been hunting now for 3 years and I found quite a bit there's 13 parcels just near Kitchener alone they're not always all that big they're like 750 acres I want is 240 acres stuff like that but there is Crown Land here and you can do pretty much anything on them as long as they are general use I didn't want to say something too bad or be offensive I'm not trying to be by no means thank you for reading

    • @thebackroadadventurer
      @thebackroadadventurer  3 года назад +3

      Firstly your mostly right on all your points, there is a good amount of crown land that is not shown on at atlas and there for doesn’t show up in the app. Usually these can only be found on the paper maps acquired from the MNRF. As you said these parcels are usually very small and not well advertised as in what activities are allowed there. I didn’t bring this up as in this (or my other crown land video) mainly because this channels focus is on 4wd vehicle based adventure travel, so the discussion mainly rotate around the activities around that (camping, backroad exploring and off-road trails). Thus these small hard to access parcels rarely fit the bill. That being said I am working on a complete crown land deep dive that will go into this subject.
      As far as general use areas, for the most part it’s a good assumption that all activities are permitted on those parcels, however sometimes based on sensitive areas like wetlands or animal migration paths some activities may not be permitted in select parcels. That’s why I always recommend checking the policy report or connecting the MNRF for the most up to date information.
