My Grandpa planted 3 trees when my Grandma and him bought their first house. One was an Alberta Spruce he planted on two copper pennies! The copper pennies were important to make the spruce a poor man’s blue spruce. It did indeed turn a bluish colour.
75 years later the trees are massive, beautiful, and considered historic. (And structural in an Edmonton Suburb)
So even though the house was torn down last year, my daughters still love the stories of the trees and can go visit Great Grandpa’s trees and the bench we put at the entrance to the park across the street.
**the other tree is actually two giant maple tree that have grown intertwined with each other. They have a plaque with my Grandparents names, one tree for each, forever together.

Jireh Climaco - Sorry for the time lapse, I didn’t see the reply. The trees are now Heritage Trees. Unfortunately, the plaque is gone right now. But, they are located on the South Side near one of the Entrances to Mill Creek. If you’re familiar with Argyll or 91st at all you’ll find it no problem 9112-71AveNW - it is a BEAUTIFUL Ave for old trees 🌳. Also, please walk down the entrance to Mill Creek just across the street to your right and you’ll find my Grandpa’s Bench!! When you look across from there you might be able to see a little cement from a huge drain pipe into what used to be a part of Mill Creek. It was a huge swimming hole for my Mom and Uncles! For us it was a smaller creek style splash area at the right times of year when we were very young.
It’s amazing how the land changes. All those bridges used to be train trestles as well, you had to watch your step. In my mom’s youth Trains still ran through there!! They had barrels on the side of the longer trestles you could jump in if you couldn’t make it to the end😱.
The world didn’t take it self so seriously then. Slowly we wrapped ourselves and kids in more and more bubble wrap.

This was the first bonsai I made, after I started watching Peter Chans videos during the covid lockdown. I have quite a few now and tons of starter material I’ve planted, took cuttings and air layerings of… I’ve even got a few from a visit to Herons Bonsai!
I visited RHS Wisley last week and got to see the collection of trees that are on permanent loan. Amazing in winter to see the bare deciduous varieties and all the structure that’s not always visible.
You continue to inspire me Peter, and so many people!
You make this hobby so accessible and whilst you clearly are a master at what you do, you don’t overcomplicate things in your tutorials.
I’ve never even met you but I can tell you sir, you are the best teacher I have ever had!
Around the same time I started watching your videos, I was diagnosed with ADHD, aged 46! I feel that your videos and the rewarding aspects of making and caring for bonsai have kept me engaged and enthusiastic about this hobby in a way that is so beneficial to my adhd focus problems, and my mental health in general. I’ve even started making bonsai pots in clay, hypertufa, concrete and rock, sort of joining the dots of the hobbies/crafts I enjoy.
I would go as far as to say that your input has been at least as useful as that of the psychiatrists, doctors and specialists I have seen over the years. I think it explains why you are so spry!
You are as much one of my heroes as anyone I’ve had on a poster up on the wall!
    So, thank you!

@gerry Wrong. So very very wrong. No bonsai master grows trees from seed, aside from small side projects and such.
Originally bonsai were almost all yamadori gathered from the mountains in Japan. Nursery stock isn't quite gathering trees from the wild, but that requires permission from land owners, so it's not always feasible.
People who attempt to grow from seed are actually looked down on by bonsai snobs.
Please don't try to act as an authority on a subject you clearly are only starting to learn. It makes it confusing for other beginners :)
All this said, growing trees from seed is very rewarding in its own right, and I often do it myself.

When I first started, there was very little in the teaching a few books , I have tried but ,I guess I got to eager and once the branch is cut !!!!! Finding this site, late I know has given me the push I need to try again. nothing boring in the teaching just a love of what you do, some people can talk to you with out it being too much the voice ,calm, informative, passionate, I will now be checking in every day until I have watched all. There are some beautiful little trees where I live. I hate seeing them mowed down. So, I think I'm going to rescue a few and see if I can make some bonsai trees out of them. Thank you for these wonderful videos! Very enlightening! 😊

I just started bonsai after working in the (big) tree care profession for years, Mr. Chan’s videos have been the best bonsai content I’ve found so far. Trees are full of mysteries to us the fact that some approach bonsai with rules you MUST follow and sacred truths you must adhere to strikes me as a deeply misguided relationship and understanding of trees.

Knowledge is Everlasting. I have the opportunity to see a Master go able his Craft and I am speechless. You make so much sense using common knowledge of the Forest. By Common I don’t mean to sound demeaning, I’m just trying to express the intention that to be able to depict Nature on a small scale, hours must be spent in the Forest. This is a Hobby for Nature lovers, Whom appreciate the Beauty of Our Planet. WOW!! This is very intense. You are not just cutting and bending for TODAY, but You’re Envisioning the FUTURE. What a Magical way to be Father Nature. It’s always fascinated Me to see how a Bonsai was Created. Only through much patience, insight in the Uncontrollably of Nature, and the Knowledge of making a small replica of a Huge tree. Thank you so much. I have a source of Knowledge to ignite the desire to Try. I will be attempting this very soon. Your Knowing and Passion for this Art form has really moved Me. Each One Teach One. ✌🏿

Always a wonder to watch Peter at work. Please do follow-up series on the maintenance, care and overall progression of this beautiful Alberta Spruce. As you progress up the Spruce, I am making decisions as to which branches to cut and using your choices as affirmation, lol.

I have 100's of these growing wild in the flower beds. I sell them for this purpose. People love them. Thank you. I had no idea the cuttings would grow. I'm retired so I haven't noticed the lockdown. I hope you're very well. 🙏

They are beautiful. They look like my property trees. Except mine are Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs. Sometimes when I do a pine bonsai I think it should resemble the 80 foot trees out side. Then I learn from you. I hope you don’t mind me saying ‘less is more’ every day. You are the Master of Bonsai. Thank you.
