Gaimon really should have tried harder to escape. However, it is surprisingly realistic that his body would have fused to the chest after even just a few years.
Fun fact: There was once a lady who stayed on a couch for a few years and she legitimately ended up fused to the couch and died when rescue crews tried to remove her.
      There are other similar stories.
If humans stay connected to a piece of furniture or a toilet for long enough their body will grow around and into that thing.

You know if Gaimon had joined the crew he would have been useless until Franky Usopp and Chopper got together.
If all 3 of them put their mind together Gaimon would have become a cyborg like Franky.
Imagine if they created multiple "bodies" for Gaimon, with him and the treasure chest as the head.
They could use a docking system to allow Gaimon to change bodys depending on the situation (like how the liger zero could transform in Zoids)
I could 100% see Oda as well as Franky, Usopp, and Chopper doing that.

Now that I think about it, there are 3 different one piece arc villains that had basically the same evil plan, but each one was a serial escalation on the previous, 5 if you are willing to stretch things.
Kuro's plan- Become trusted by a small island's richest family and take all the money and position for himself by using his crew to stage a pirate attack leaving him to inherit all the money, and then live comfortably in retirement
Crocodile's plan- Become trusted by the people of a large Island nation, while using an extensive criminal empire to not only gain wealth and power, but set of a revolution on false pretenses, leaving you to come in and save the day and take full control of the county, simultaneously finding a powerful superweapon to presumably use for grander evil schemes later
Doflamingo's plan- Stage a pirate attack, or rather threaten one, to set up a king so you can make him look like a monster, then defeat him and become a hero, letting you take over the country while everyone adores you. Then run the world's largest criminal empire from said kingdom, using some fruit powers to unperson people to keep things going
Arlong and Kaido both had set ups that were similar in the whole take over an island/country bit, but they didn't bother with faking being the good guy... Arlong just straight up took over an island (a decent escalation over Kuro) and Kaido was basically the perfect storm of remixing Arlong and the other three along with big mom via his working with Orochi, Orochi did all the tricking the populance bit for a while and then just relied on Kaido to step in and be the muscle and rule by force by proxy, while Kaido was Arlong's rule by force on a much larger scale, while sharing Big Mom's nature as more of a natural disaster than an opponent you could fight.

Luffy probably rationalizes that “stealing” the empty treasure chests would’ve inspired Gaimon to leave the island-and the box-by giving him a new dream to chase.
Inspiring people to chase their dreams is kind of his thing!
It’s a really clever metaphor, too. Gaimon put himself in the box by being “greedy”, but then stayed _in_ the box because he couldn’t accept his greed was for _nothing_.
So Luffy “stealing” the treasure gives Gaimon a “something” to chase after-because, even if the treasure is empty, if Gaimon catches Luffy? Well, there’s even *more* treasure in that, right?
🎶 Drums of liberation wherever he goes 🎶

    • @dekuisagreatmaincharacter
      @dekuisagreatmaincharacter 5 месяцев назад +2

I interpret this whole story with Gaimon as a bit of a metaphor for life. Yes, I know, laugh all you want, but hear me out.
Gaimon failed to accomplish something (reach the treasure), and it left him in a bad state, being stuck in the box. He lived like this for 20 years, making due with what he had, until Luffy comes along and allows him to get the treasure, only for it to be empty. He chased after something for years, which brought him a lot of misfortune, only for the thing he was chasing turn out to be literally nothing.
I say it’s a metaphor for life because that’s kinda what life is, especially if you look at it from a nihilistic perspective. We seek things like wealth, fame and power, often going through misfortune because of it, but in the end, none of it really matters. Borrowing a line from Bink’s Sake, _“It doesn’t matter who you are, someday you’ll just be bones.”_
So Luffy attempting to steal the empty boxes is a Luffy way to make Gaimon see that his life wasn’t meaningless. I don’t think Luffy was trying to “protect” Gaimon from the truth, but to give him a new purpose by chasing after him or something like that, similar to what he does to Laboon. He does this kinds of things a lot, actually. He really is a warrior of liberation and a bringer of hope, even though he still refuses to be recognized as a hero.
Fortunately he doesn’t need to go on with his ridiculous plan, as Gaimon is able to see that, even though there was no treasure waiting for him at the end, his life wasn’t meaningless. He still had all the weird animals, and those made life worth living. It’s another major theme of One Piece, the idea that the journey is more important than the destination. Gaimon’s life with the animals while he tried to reach the treasure is more important than the treasure itself. Luffy’s adventures with his friends while they search for the One Piece is more significant than whatever the One Piece is. Any person’s life, how they spend it and who they spend it with matters more than any achievements they accomplish, as ultimately, the road to those achievements is what makes the bulk of their life.
I’m no philosophy expert, but I find the themes and ideals of One Piece very similar to those of existentialism. One of the key words of existentialism is in fact freedom, and how essential it is in creating the meaning of one’s own life. The absurd is also a key concept, and if there’s one word I’d use to describe One Piece, it’d be absurd. This is a very surface level reading of existentialism (like I said, I’m no expert), but I find its similarities to One Piece fascinating.
I just wrote an essay about how a story of a guy in a box is a metaphor for life and connected it to existentialist philosophy.

Recently started a reread of the manga, and I was surprised when I got to Gaimon, because I could have sworn he was an anime filler character. And then I remembered being surprised about the exact same thing on my first readthrough.
The character so bizarre he makes you convince yourself he doesn't actually exist

I miss the charm of pre-time skip too, but Oda did make Luffy's ultimate power incredibly goofy "because he didn't want to make the stakes high and everything too serious like every other shonen" and we know for a fact the one piece makes people laugh. So I feel positive about the future, I think there are still a few goofy adventures waiting for us even if it gets mixed up with the state of the world every now and then

Yeah the passage of time should have actually made it more likely that Gaimon could escape the box since either he would have ateophied enough that he would have lost weight and could have more easily slipped out, or the wood would have gotten old and began to weaken or rot. So one can only assume that as you say he was just intentionally not trying.
And what i find funny about early One Piece in retrospect is that Luffy pretty much shares the backstory of that one Pearl guy from Don Krieg's crew of living in the jungle and having to fight animals to survive as a kid, except where that guy eventually picked fire as a weapon of choice Luffy just kept up his strategy of blunt force trauma via either his fists or a pipe he found in the trash. And also occasionaly just swallowing things whole like a snake, i am pretty sure.

Fortunately he doesn’t need to go on with it, as Gaimon is able to see that, even though there was no treasure waiting for him at the end, his life wasn’t meaningless.
This is a very surface level reading of existentialism (like I said, I’m no expert), but I find its similarities to One Piece fascinating.

i do this shit all the time. (make essays on one piece) One piece pre time skip is goated with all these deep shows of grounded real life struggle through an absurdist medium.
giving Laboon a new purpose was heart warming. I bet many relate to laboon and gaimon, doing a shitty job for a chunk of their lifespan and in a way saying that they fused with their box.
some people even though they hate their lifepath some times, will still say that theyve sunk so much into this investment, that changing things up is too much.
some would really rather die than take their uniform off, or say “the only time this is coming off is if I die” type of thing with their title and position.
and not always out of their volition, but rather a stockholm syndrome relationship with themselves.
“ive only ever been this. how could i possibly be something else” type of dilemma

What Mugiwara's confusedly recollecting in the beginning is actually a favorite early One Piece arc of mine: Warship Island. Goes down like this: the then five-strong band of Straw Hats find and help a girl who can talk to animals bring an old dragon named Grampa Ryu (I know he's called something else in the Japanese, I'm just going off of what I know), all while being hunted by Marine Commodore Nelson and his sneaky assassin agent Eric the Whirlwind. It's technically filler, but it's filler that could technically exist in the main canon given how it doesn't really interfere with continuity.
