    They definitely have an English/Singaporean accent when speaking it.
    It is especially noticeable with the R sounds.

    A Portuguese-based language. As a Portuguese speaker, this is SOOOO interesting to hear. It sounds very familiar, very Portuguese-like, but at the same time very different and diverged from it.

    As a native portuguese speaker I can understand 100% of it! It's impressive how this language managed to survive through centuries of Dutch and English rule after the Portuguese were kicked from Malaysia. Notwithstanding, they are not native speakers, they have a heavy english accent. I remember of having watched a video in which a native Kristang speaker from Malacca speaking the language, it resembled portuguese even more.

    I am a native European Portuguese speaker and I can hear more Bahasa than Portuguese. Maybe it’s the American accent they have, but I still enjoyed listening!

    I speak both Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese. And it's interesting how this languague is much similar to Cape Verdean/Guine Bissau Creole than modern day portuguese

      There’s a small community in Malaysia who speaks this language. They are called Kristang people and the language is called Papia Kristang but the local community refer to the language as Portugis (Portuguese). Sadly, the language is dying because it is not taught in school. Approximately only 750 speakers left in Malacca, Malaysia today. Aside from Malaysia, there are about 100 speakers left in Singapore.

    I think the Portuguese Eurasian community have significant Sinhalese ancestry. Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) was a Portuguese colony and Portuguese explorers settled there and formed a colony. Their mixed descendants soon started colonizing Malacca. I have seen many Portuguese Eurasians and they more like Sri Lankans instead of Portuguese from Portugal.

    • @odlumormik5669
      @odlumormik5669 2 года назад +2

      Maybe. also, many of them married other non-Muslims of other ethnic backgrounds like Chinese and Indians. Malays now are very tied to Islam. If people marry a Malay in Malaysia, they have to convert to Islam legally and it is difficult for them to renounce the religion. So many of their descendants have varying phenotypes

    • @karlos_infamous
      @karlos_infamous 2 года назад

      @@odlumormik5669 yup, agree. Many Portuguese Eurasians chose to maintain Christianity/Catholicism so they marry ethnic groups where they they don't need to change their religion.
