@@8475143117ironically Lawton is the closest thing you’ll get in the US to an actual eastern block communist centrally designed factory town. You see these places in Yugoslavia that were built around a shoe factory and exist for no other reason. If the government pulls the plug on the military base this could be a stop on the orient express in the 90’s

The biggest takeway here is. Lawton has a city council who are useless in getting grants to improve downtown. They can get state and Federal grants to improve aesthetics downtown. Let alone take a bond out to do it. Because all I see is a city that doesnt care that rather suck what money it can get and never bother to improve itself.

Water bill was 60.00 a month now since they raised it its 90.00 a month and trash pickup cut to once a week from twice a week. Marijuana shops and drugs and Homeless on every corner. Not the greatest place to raise your kids.
Residential streets are terrible in this town Especially Ridgecrest addition.
I've lived here for 17 years, and while they've expanded it some and added new businesses to it, it's not any better than it was nearly two decades ago. If the opportunity ever comes for us to leave this place, we're taking it.

I was born in Lawton as my dad was in the army. We moved away when I was only two years old. Thank God. And as far as complaints about a useless city council.... y'all voted them in.
Old Lawton OK. Lived there for six years while stationed at FT Sill. Wasn’t a lot to do when it came to entertainment, However, there is good fishing spots near by.
My hometown, which I'm glad I left, it was nothing to do there, real boring!
I hated Lawton at first too, when I was stationed at Ft Sill, lived there for years, and now I miss it.😢
I did my basic training and AIT at Ft Sill during the summer of '82. 3 months there was plenty for me. I did have some good times on 1st street back then ! LoL
I go back to vids like this and it reminds me of how much the ruling class of Lawton has squandered in every opportunity they had for not only growth, but also preservation of historic locales. Regarding historic losses: they are on their THIRD county courthouse and that one is in disrepair. There were at one point two train depots in town, but very beautiful buildings. Lincoln elementary school is a shambles. They destroyed their historic downtown, and in its place installed a mall Central Mall, which today has lost almost all its anchors and most shops due to ever increasing rent prices. Amazing places like Bianco's Italian are now gone due to MUH 2ND STREET PROJECT, but I suppose at least it cleaned up the area a little.
Regarding resources for opportunities that are being squandered:
Wichita Falls Texas down the road does the same thing. As Sheppard AFB shrinks the town is slowly dying.
I love my hometown but absolutely despise our ruling class here.

I was born at Ft. Sill and lived in quarters til we got stationed at our next stop. Both of my parents’ sides are Army and grandparents retired in Lawton in late 60s. The houses in Lawton where my relatives lived and live in are very well made- old. Brick all around. Spread out. Not cookie-cutter, except the absolutely ridiculous newer ones that look like funeral homes- GRAYGE. What’s up with the hospital gray everywhere? The entire country, I add. My parents met in passing in Lawton in the mid 60s. Both Artillery fams, and both sides stationed at Ft. Sill repeatedly. I am very nostalgic, so Ft. Sill and Lawton mean the world to me. It’s very sad to see its decline year by year. It’s NOT getting any better. Once Walmart came, as per usual, the mom and pop stores are wiped out as well. It is devastating to see Lawton this way. Houses are pretty cheap here now, I bet! Hey! Y’all still have WAYNE’S DRIVE INN!!! That’s… that’s… thass about it..

The two times I was ever in Lawton. 1) I got pulled over by two cops that acted overly dramatic and were total a holes after I ran a flashing red light in heavy rain without being familiar with the streets. 2) I was bullied and treated rudely by the court bailiff when I went to court over the ticket from incident one. Taught me never to go back.
Those traffic lights have been in permanent flash mode for a long time

Why don't they take a drive down rollercoaster Lee blvd ,or pot hole 38th street from Gore to Lee. And watch for all the Homeless holding up signs at Cache Road and in the Dollar Tree parking lot on Sheridan Rd. If you are looking for a good place to live move to Elgin. Lawton has to many Marijuana shops and Drugs.

I like Lawton. I do not live there , but sure has more to do than Enid. Enid is boring and ugly. Nothing to do. Lawton has Mt. Scott nearby, several museums, better stores.

I was stationed at Fort Sill twice during my military career and trust me between the two times I was stationed there it never improved; truth be told it got worse. It was not on my radar at all when it came time to retire. Talk about a corrupt little Podunk town that targeted the military, this was by far the worst. The police were very active on the 15th and end of month scurrying around handing out tickets, yeah you did not stand a chance once the saw the military sticker on your car.
Prime example of the biting the hand that feeds you. I often wished that Fort Sill would shut down and let this F...ed up down dry up and blow away. Don't get me wrong, the people were great, it was the Power in Charge that viewed everyone else as scum and particularly the military; to them the military was a profit center when it came to handing out tickets. I never got one, but I had to stand with a lot of soldiers in my platoon(s) before the Cmd.
F. Lawton and it's police if they are still doing this garbage.

BCT you won't have a choice, AIT you could move off base but why, it is not like you have the money for rent. Also being GREEN, you will be clearly visible and an easy target down range (off base) for those that like to target new young soldiers, most of whom are away from home for the first time. @@VL-wn1js
Shifting gears and a little bit of free advise.
Every time you visit the dispensary for whatever reason, no matter how small you think it is...keep a hard copy for yourself of this visit. Do not depend on you military records to be accurate as they tend to be inaccurate. You might think it silly but one day you will understand why I told you this...especially should you have to file for VA disability. Best of Luck in the new WOKE Army, I have advised my grandkids against it. I would not have done that 5 years ago, personally I would not could not serve under this President.

Lawton, Altus, Wichita Falls they are all the same. Lawton does have better recreation areas Wichita mountains wildlife refuge.

Lawton looks sooo dead compared to the last time I went there in 2009 for a high school football game.
Downtown looks like shit no doubt but Lawton is actually a really great place to live compared to other options in the surrounding area (it’s my hometown so I’m biased).
Lawtons the commercial hub of the region and it’s super diverse for a small city in Oklahoma. Like a lot of military towns, it’s a little rough in certain areas. However if you’re not a criminal, and don’t engage in high risk behavior, then you’re likely not going to be the victim of a violent crime. Property crimes are typically limited to certain neighborhoods as well.
The schools are hit hard miss. The quality is determined by the neighborhoods it serves usually (but not always). There’s also great natural scenery with the Wichita Mountains to the north of town. The Wichita Mountains and Medicine Park are also really great places to explore.
The main issue is that there’s really not much to do other than outdoor activities. It can get boring honestly. That and work were the reasons we moved to OKC.
If you’re ever in Lawton, keep an open mind and try Cali Burrito, Burgess Grill, or John and Cooks BBQ 😊
Edit: The nicer areas of town are East and West of the downtown core. The farther east and west you go the better.

@@ViceroyVisagoth I don't know what video you were watching but he NEVER made a legal stop, consult with a law officer before you continue to run red lights, a legal stop is when you come to a complete stop, that is the wheels actually stop turning, and a count of 2 seconds, maybe you need to get outside and see the world.
