Yeah this was real, or at least based heavily on real life events... Far as I know 8 Americans died, 2 gained the medal of honor, and around 80 to 100 Taliban were killed in the battle.
Putting a military camp at the bottom of a narrow gorge is ignoring literally thousands of years of military strategists. WTF. The UAZ jeep at 10:20 is a nice touch, though.
you are telling me, we ended up having a FOB like this. Surrounded by multiple mountains with two ways in and out. Was the dumbest spot and we were there for 1 week. When we did a mounted patrol there were 3-4 crow nests just that we saw. Large enough for art or multiple gunners.
Literally it's at the bottom of a hill not near any place of interest not a check point just a fob in the middle of no where just seems like a punishment to go there
Tactical advantage for other outposts, same as fake air bases attracting airstrikes. The enemies will focus fire on dummy or bait bases giving time for other battalions to move forward undetectable. It's practically a base of sacrificial lambs
Army command wanted the outpost to drew-in the Taliban basically.... the outpost itself had no value for the army nor the safety of the people in the area.
I think it was battle of Tra Binh when ROK marines faced a similar situation. NVA surrounding them outnumbering them and the marine didn't have air support, while the NVA had mortars to support their advancing troops. The marines while holding onto certain positions made openings in their post allowed to NVA to advance. When the NVA soldiers 'thought' they made a breakthrough and charged through those openings they were actually led into a trap. Because the troops engaged in close combat, mortars couldn't aid them and the Korean marines more skilled in close combat and bigger in size absolutely tore the NVA apart with knives. The KDA was 24:1 earning the ROK marines a name in that war.
I remember hearing about this years ago. Anyone who understand combat/defense strategies 101, knows that high ground is superior. Whoever thought that this FOB was a good strategy, was an absolute turd. At the very least, there should have been heavily armed sentry guards and snipers, all around the top of those mountains. Having QRF air support and artillery nearby, should have been on day 1. I have to wonder what the value of this base was. If there was a legit reason to keep this FOB, the "leadership" should have done more to secure/support it. Being undermanned, and having air-support 2 hours away, makes it seem like a 2nd lieutenant and a private, that just got out of basic, did the threat assessment and planning for this base. I would bet that there's some high ranking turds, that helped plan this base, that didn't even have to face a little accountability for this screw up. I would even bet that some were promoted, and have a chest full of shiny medals, for their "brave" contributions and sacrifices. The real heroes of war, are general E-6 and down, yet they rarely get recognized for their contributions and sacrifices. It's always the the higher ranks, that sit back with clean boots, sipping on an ice cold drink, that get all of the shiny medals. The military rewards system is mostly a circle jerk. In general, the soldiers that have the most medals on their chest, got those medals, because of lower ranking soldiers sacrifices and bravery, not their own.
It’s a tactic they used with some of forward operating bases in Helmand. The taliban hid in the hills that well that this was the best option in some places. Very dangerous but also very affective at drawing the enemy to you.
1. Not northern Afghanistan, base was in Nuristan Afghanistan (east) in border of Pakistan chatral . And army base was in worst position possible. As you can see the base is inside valley and very closely covered by mountains ⛰️
Afghanistan has complex terrain. You can make the outpost on top of the mountain but then supplying your troops becomes difficult you have to do it via helicopter.
The outpost this movie is based on was on top of a hill. When the base was attacked in the mid-2000s, the Taliban video recorded the assault and put it on RUclips. A few weeks later, the video was scrubbed out of the Internet. During the assault, the taliban got into the base and fought hand to hand and absolutely walloped the US soldiers and threw them down the hill.
I am not offcially in the military, but I have a 2 cents to share. First, from my understanding, this outpost was in the worst possible location. Second, afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires because no empire has ever conquered it. For my brothers in arms, when you go to war, in a foreign country, try to learn their way of life. With this information, you will be able to navigate through their land without firing a single shot. But hey, I am just a random guy.
Afghanistan has been conquered plenty of times. It has never been held though, but than again, which region has right? Anyway, it's usually not worth the hassle because you're dealing with so many mountains and rough, useless terrain, and for what? The country has nothing to offer, no offense, but it has no natural resources and no real agricultural value. There's a reason 90% of Afghanistan is barely populated.
I truly believe the reason Afghanistan was such a failure was due to us trying to reason with the citizens. That country is so extremized anyone who isn't 100% pro America should've been seen as an enemy
Review "Restrepo" for a real documentary of what it was like when it was REAL bad. Forewarning, everything in that "movie" is actually real footage of real soldiers really doing their thing. It's not very graphic, but highly disturbing.
Okay who is making these thumbnails and titles, seriously I just see a dude on his knees and then I read Taliban trap us soldier inside their base and give them he... Gee I wonder what that last word was....?
I like how they try and get the soldiers to appear as if they actually care about rules of engagement and war crimes when everyone knows America and Israel don't care about human life at all
I find your thumbnails disgusting, though, enjoy your content. Please do not be like other beings in this world, simply be straight forward without the extra flash you feel you require.

I know Afghan war is described as highly disorganized and unclear in planning, but that outpost is no better than sitting on top of armed landmine
Omfg talk about it who plans a bace in that area

Was this an actual military outpost? I couldn't think of a worst place. Giving yourself the low ground while giving your enemy ample hiding.
Can't recall a battle or conflict where the guys in the bottom of a valley won , l might be wrong if you know different ?
It's based on a real story.
yea it was called outpost keating and the battle was called the battle of kamdesh

Afghanistan has been conquered MANY times, mostly by Indian empires such as the Maratha Empire or the Sikh Empire to name a few.
