Had a FN Minimi for years. Had a 100rd belt pouch in the gun. 2x200rd belts on the hips and 2x200rd in my assaultpack. Had som stiff back from time to time but never anything big lile the other guys that had 600rd on their vests/chest rigs. Also, training for the role is very important. Lots of leg, hip and core workouts but also flexability excercises is a must.
Adam, good content. Love the old time gunner pics too love your generations vibes. Former gunner here, couple things to chip in for the Joe's out there. 1. LUBE LUBE LUBE. Even as the gunner you can never have enough lube (especially if you're on a 249). My personal favorite is the Frog Lube, lubricant and paste. It comes in a nice mini spray bottle and doesn't have cancer causing agents like CLP. LOLLLL. 2. Your Gerber, Leatherman whatever, needs to be on your person or easily accessible. Like Adam said, if you're the gunner and you're fighting alone, you need to be able to fix that locked up bolt, jammed round, feed tray paws issues, whatever by yourself. I personally liked keeping a flat head screw driver + Gerber up front on my body to be able to fix those issues as they arise. Tie those items down to your body, they are mission essential. Plus you can always stab ol' boy with the screw driver should it come to that lol 3. YOU NEED NEED NEED to treat being an assaulter like you're an endurance athlete. Gels, carbs, electrolytes, salt chews, caffeine, all of it. It makes a HUGE difference keeping your body right when you're humping the gun up and down hills all day. Do yourself a favor and learn about how ultra marathoners fuel themselves. Find a place on your kit to keep that stuff. 4. Wrist compass. Suunto makes a 40 dollar wrist compass you need to have if you're a gunner. Honestly everyone in the platoon should have one. Being able to find your direction/azimuth by bringing your wrist to your face saves so much time and keeps everyone on the same page. Adam if you're reading this, end user gear request. Making an "assault pack" that is stowable/collopsable kinda like the Patagonia Black-Hole series or Cotopaxi bags, so that it can get thrown in my Alice Pack but gunners/whoever, could whip it out for assaulting.

Nice seeing you guys look out for us regular joes. Being a commo guy I would always give radios to the gun team guys, completely agree with what you said on that.
Really depends on the level of medical training the person has, as well as what the op is going to be, +(how long it is supposed to be, how long will it take for a medevac to get to you, how long in the worst case will you have to hold on to a critical patient, ect) I always kept a few TQs ready to roll in a medium pouch, as well as the basics on me with more advanced equipment in my med bag, though there are a lot better options out there than the old Blackhawk bag I had back in the day. Tasmanian Tiger has some sweet kit that I would deck myself out in if I was still in, another thing is making sure everyone's IFAK is good to go, with another TQ and your favorite bandage of choice as extras.
For the food, get yourself a claymore pouch from Tactical Tailor or other manufacturer. You can wrap around yourself or ruck/assault pack. Love these videos keep it up!
Was a gunner for the 240 as my battle station on a cruiser in the Navy for general quarters. Didn’t have to carry everything like y’all did, but this is still cool to see another side of it. This squid approves.
Some of the best times i had in the army where on a gun team. It is not for the faint of heart, but some of the best Soldiers ive ever had have had extended time behind the 240. Something i did when i was a gunner was i took the issued butt pack and i made a kydex box for it, about the size of 3 7.62 boxes taped together, and that would hold about 350 rnds, and can be worn around the waist, and stowed at the top of a ruck if needed. Another thing that i started doing that became SOP was as an AG i had my own saw pouch on my kit that i would carry a 100 round belt in, that would be the absolute last source of ammo i would feed into the gun. To every machine gun team out there, this is my advice to you, stop trying to abandon your barrel bag, it is your friend. Practice, practice, practice your gun drills, it is a good piece of kit and it is irreplaceable.
Great video. It is nice to the A-Dub getting some love and it is sad to hear that shit never changes. I carried a MK43 in Iraq, and we had to get our own kit as machinegunners because the command didn't issue anything out for the AWs at all. We were a small team and there wasn't an AG, so it was all on the gunner to carry his ammo and kit. Your setup is basically the same thing I ran except it was all based on the LBT 1195 H harness or Blackhawk ISSAK gunner rigs.

Honestly, i’m new to the “targets of opportunity” doctrine and I didn’t even consider the AG as a TO. The crew gun and radio op. would be the go-to in my mind, but the AG is just as important like you said. Excellent video regarding the kit. I always learn something new every Shake-Down episode you guys make

I appreciate the pouches and showing placement and reason. I especially appreciate what you carry inside them. The little details I had not thought of or experience are helpful to avoid learning the hard way, and are not adding much weight. I’m glad to see the poncho rather that tarp. Achieve that goal of sun or foul weather protection and also concealment. I really like this being a waist carry harness. The chest rigs are breaking our backs and pushing our profile off the ground when in the prone. Causing us to be seen and hit, or an unstable shooting platform. Great job as always Spiritus and Adam!

I wonder if it's going to become doctrine soon to have most of your gear on a load bearing harness and then use some sort of sleek plate carrier with minimal gear. Because it seems to me that it's becoming sort of a meta, it does seem very useful. I also think it looks really cool.
UKM gunner here! How will this work with a plate carrier(because the panels are quite tall, I have some concerns about the purchase)? Will the panels interfere with wearing the plates? Will the harness should go above or under the carrier?

As a 249 gunner in the Army. Fuck carrying that thing. Especially the big pig. The Marines got it figured out with the M27. With the extended 60 round mags. I wish they would do something with a piston driven Ar10 platform making that super dependable and making a 75 round mag for it. I feel like if your going to carry 30 plus pounds make the gun 10 pounds and 40 lbs of ammo. Then you can carry 7.62 and a badass speed loader in a box and speed load the 10 to 20 big mags you can also carry the smaller box mags too. What do you think.

Those that have used both the 240 and the 60, which did you prefer? i know the 60 is a bit lighter and supposedly the newer versions are quite reliable
So I wonder how you put your ruck on when you put those pouches on your hip? I’m look for a set up that can wear it with large/medium ruck for patrolling
You can either empty the contents of the butt pack and wear the ruck without a belt or you can remove the butt pack and just wear the split rig with the Fat Strap instead of the X harness which allows you to wear a ruck with the belt. The butt pack set up is more for an assault or short patrol than a long movement that requires a big ruck.
The new limas look good. I didnt have an A gunner in afghan so I had to carry everything and at one point they got the bright idea that I needed my M4 at the same time as well, even though I had a pistol. A miracle im not 100% disabled jumping wadis with all that shit on. Eventually I took it upon myself to just ignore the whole m4 thing. I used sapi pouches to store ammo on my plate carrier in addition to what I had in my pack, my 7.62 pouches that I ordered before I left for deployment didnt show up until the last month, go figure. I knew you were an LRAK kid. Lol Seriously great minds. I’m cemented on the rifleman version of it as being the standard configuration for me now. I bought it as a rifleman, but once I became an AG it made the most sense. I would carry the 200rds in the hips, and another 500 in the RFI assault pack but still have the ability to carry mags and a smoke. It had the those smoke loops, but I was TERRIFIED of losing one. I like your rig. I’m saving saving up for the 34A. I was kinda hesitant before seeing this kit because I need 10 column of molle to complete my variant.
There’s a reason I’m strong ranger not smart (not am I a ranger at all lol). I’d like to buy this system because I am currently an AG but I can’t don’t the butt back on your sight I’ve currently bought most cool things from your sight besides this. I love the idea of the split rig just need the butt pack option.
The SAW is a 5.56 machine gun and the m240 is a 7.62x51mm machine gun. This gives the m240 a greater effective range and more capability downrange, but the SAW allows you to carry more ammo (due to weight concerns) and still has a lot of firepower. The SAW is also a light machine gun and the 240 is a medium machine gun
In US service, the 240 is often employed in gun teams - due to it weighing more, ammo weighing more, etc. it gets used as a traditional machinegun, with 2-3 people operating the weapon in a true crew-served role. This usually means the gun squad is attached to a platoon, and the Plt commander uses the gun squad to lock down avenues of approach in the defense, or suppress enemy positions in an assault. The gun squad's only job is to dakka dakka and support the rifle squads with heavier, sustained firepower. While the M249 looks similar and is a belt fed as well, it's lighter machinegun with lighter ammo and less effective range. Because of this, there's no real benefit to operate it in a traditional gun team with 2-3 people supporting the weapon. You don't need the extra people to run the gun, and if you're going to have extra people, run the 240 since it does better in that role. Instead, the M249 is used as a squad automatic weapon (SAW). In this role, one person is given the gun in a fireteam, and that boosts the team's automatic fire capability. They add more firepower, but they're still light and mobile enough to do regular squad things, such as assaulting an enemy position, fire and maneuver, etc. Instead of multiple people supporting the gun, the M249 gunner is more or less expected to use the weapon on his own, since everybody else in the fireteam has their own jobs to do.
The 240 is heavier. The rounds are heavier. It’s used in the medium/heavy role in a rifle platoon. It’s operated by a crew and usually (95% of the time) from the tripod. It’s is controlled at the platoon level. The 249 is a fireteam controlled machine gun. It is employed by 1 person and 99% of the time it is not employed with a tripod. Basically to put this into a better analogy, the 240 is the 1919 belt fed machine gun. The 249 is the BAR.
No one has done this. I was a 240 gunner in Afghanistan, and the most i ever took on me was 600 rounds, and that was specifically for raids where i knew i wasnt going to be moving more than a mile, 2 tops. Generally we would only carry 2-300 on the gunner. You just arent able to move with all that weight
With belted ammo it makes sense, but what other reason would someone want a GP Tall instead of a GP medium on a chest rig panel? Any examples of equipment or items that I need the extra height to fit?
Why not an extra barrel? How many rounds before a barrel change is needed? If you're going to carry 500... 1,000 rounds, that's enough to heat up a barrel, right? Well if you can't be sure that your assistant gunner is going to be available to provide additional ammo, you also can't be sure that he'll be there with a new barrel, right?
I would ditch the zipper closures. Could get caught up. Buckle closures. I run british tactical molle belt 4 high by 16 across. With side utility pouches. Fireforce buttpack. And h harness. I disagree with his approach. A minimilalist chest rig for radio, pistol , etc.. as spec ops you may get in vehicles. You would have to take his rig off to drive, sit in car. I would rather have radio , etc minimal chest rig that never comes off.. Yeah it's better to have most kit on belt kit. I would still go with tiny split front chest rig.
The machine gunner isn’t going to drive. Most likely he’s standing in the bed of a truck acting as an Air Guard. The even dispersement of weight helps in carrying the ridiculously overweight machine gun built for a tank not a human to carry. So having a buttpack isn’t a detriment to a machine gunner.
@@fathead8933 maybe you missed the point of my comment. I run a British tactical 4 molle high by 16 across belt with fireforce buttpack and 3 side utility pouches on either side that all have molle on them on sides and top as well. My set up is the same size as what he just showed or bigger and better. The point was I would still run a minimal split front chest rig as well given the operating in vehicles consideration. These huge rigs have to be taken off to sit unless you are in back of truck or personally carrier, helicopter. Maybe radio, pistol, ifak etc on chest rig,. You have a baseline comms, protection and medical on chest rig.. That's the downside of this type of rig he is showing. I am trying to mitigate that so if I take off this belt kit I still have base line on me.. My suggestion would be to run a minimalist chest rig with this belt kit. Little downside to that.
@@mysticjedi6730 oh I see your thought process. And as a rifleman, I agree it’s better. The difference being that this is a loadout for a machine gunner in a sustainment environment. If you have access to vehicles that’s great, then you take the stuff off the back and stick in a bag and leave in the vehicle or throw on when you dismount. But the machine gun is ALWAYS going to be on the outside of the vehicle in one shape or another. The only exception being helicopter and the troop seats are designed to be used with buttpacks. So again fireteam postion? Yeah take that off maybe suffer a little. MG? If you wanna carry it and can then go for it. Also stacking tolerance is a thing as far as your shoulders are concerned. I’m not far off from your concept. I use my chest rig placard as a navigation/admin board that happens to have 4 mags. And I’m doing this to clear the space for my assault pack. But again my loadout is basically a rifleman+/DMR role. I’m carrying 3 different optics systems, x2 basic load, and the sustainment/survival gear required for a nonlinear/ lack of supplies conflict for 2 days. Anything past 2 days and you’re most likely defensive at which case things like Rubbermaid totes become a smarter solution.

Ref 6:55 , NZ doctrine is for the Gun 1 to have 'first line' belt on them. The number of rounds is widely argued, but is between 500-800rds.

in jungle or cities the SAW is needed. closed bolt automatic rifle, mag fed not as useful as belt fed open bolt. Marines still use the SAW btw.

You can either empty the contents of the butt pack and wear the ruck without a belt or you can remove the butt pack and just wear the split rig with the Fat Strap instead of the X harness which allows you to wear a ruck with the belt. The butt pack set up is more for an assault or short patrol than a long movement that requires a big ruck.

The new limas look good. I didnt have an A gunner in afghan so I had to carry everything and at one point they got the bright idea that I needed my M4 at the same time as well, even though I had a pistol. A miracle im not 100% disabled jumping wadis with all that shit on. Eventually I took it upon myself to just ignore the whole m4 thing. I used sapi pouches to store ammo on my plate carrier in addition to what I had in my pack, my 7.62 pouches that I ordered before I left for deployment didnt show up until the last month, go figure. GTFGU

I knew you were an LRAK kid. Lol Seriously great minds. I’m cemented on the rifleman version of it as being the standard configuration for me now.
I bought it as a rifleman, but once I became an AG it made the most sense. I would carry the 200rds in the hips, and another 500 in the RFI assault pack but still have the ability to carry mags and a smoke. It had the those smoke loops, but I was TERRIFIED of losing one.
I like your rig. I’m saving saving up for the 34A. I was kinda hesitant before seeing this kit because I need 10 column of molle to complete my variant.

I’d like to buy this system because I am currently an AG but I can’t don’t the butt back on your sight I’ve currently bought most cool things from your sight besides this. What is the application difference between the m240 vs the saw? I haven’t been able to find out
The SAW is a 5.56 machine gun and the m240 is a 7.62x51mm machine gun. This gives the m240 a greater effective range and more capability downrange, but the SAW allows you to carry more ammo (due to weight concerns) and still has a lot of firepower. The SAW is also a light machine gun and the 240 is a medium machine gun
In US service, the 240 is often employed in gun teams - due to it weighing more, ammo weighing more, etc. it gets used as a traditional machinegun, with 2-3 people operating the weapon in a true crew-served role. This usually means the gun squad is attached to a platoon, and the Plt commander uses the gun squad to lock down avenues of approach in the defense, or suppress enemy positions in an assault. The gun squad's only job is to dakka dakka and support the rifle squads with heavier, sustained firepower.
While the M249 looks similar and is a belt fed as well, it's lighter machinegun with lighter ammo and less effective range. Because of this, there's no real benefit to operate it in a traditional gun team with 2-3 people supporting the weapon. You don't need the extra people to run the gun, and if you're going to have extra people, run the 240 since it does better in that role. Instead, the M249 is used as a squad automatic weapon (SAW). In this role, one person is given the gun in a fireteam, and that boosts the team's automatic fire capability. They add more firepower, but they're still light and mobile enough to do regular squad things, such as assaulting an enemy position, fire and maneuver, etc. Instead of multiple people supporting the gun, the M249 gunner is more or less expected to use the weapon on his own, since everybody else in the fireteam has their own jobs to do.
The 240 is heavier. The rounds are heavier. It’s used in the medium/heavy role in a rifle platoon. It’s operated by a crew and usually (95% of the time) from the tripod. It’s is controlled at the platoon level.
The 249 is a fireteam controlled machine gun. It is employed by 1 person and 99% of the time it is not employed with a tripod.
Basically to put this into a better analogy, the 240 is the 1919 belt fed machine gun. The 249 is the BAR.

No one has done this. I was a 240 gunner in Afghanistan, and the most i ever took on me was 600 rounds, and that was specifically for raids where i knew i wasnt going to be moving more than a mile, 2 tops. Generally we would only carry 2-300 on the gunner. You just arent able to move with all that weight

With belted ammo it makes sense, but what other reason would someone want a GP Tall instead of a GP medium on a chest rig panel? Any examples of equipment or items that I need the extra height to fit?
They’re the same size as the Tactical tailor side RACK pouches which were designed for breaching charges so probably breaching charges.

Why not an extra barrel? How many rounds before a barrel change is needed? If you're going to carry 500... 1,000 rounds, that's enough to heat up a barrel, right? Well if you can't be sure that your assistant gunner is going to be available to provide additional ammo, you also can't be sure that he'll be there with a new barrel, right?
Casually reccomends machine gunners personally aquire a $2k LRF. Imagine an E2/E3 getting paid enough to do that

I run british tactical molle belt 4 high by 16 across. With side utility pouches. Fireforce buttpack. And h harness.
I disagree with his approach. A minimilalist chest rig for radio, pistol , etc.. as spec ops you may get in vehicles. You would have to take his rig off to drive, sit in car. I would rather have radio , etc minimal chest rig that never comes off..

The machine gunner isn’t going to drive. Most likely he’s standing in the bed of a truck acting as an Air Guard. The even dispersement of weight helps in carrying the ridiculously overweight machine gun built for a tank not a human to carry. So having a buttpack isn’t a detriment to a machine gunner.
@@fathead8933 maybe you missed the point of my comment. I run a British tactical 4 molle high by 16 across belt with fireforce buttpack and 3 side utility pouches on either side that all have molle on them on sides and top as well. My set up is the same size as what he just showed or bigger and better.
The point was I would still run a minimal split front chest rig as well given the operating in vehicles consideration. These huge rigs have to be taken off to sit unless you are in back of truck or personally carrier, helicopter.
Maybe radio, pistol, ifak etc on chest rig,. You have a baseline comms, protection and medical on chest rig..
That's the downside of this type of rig he is showing. I am trying to mitigate that so if I take off this belt kit I still have base line on me..
My suggestion would be to run a minimalist chest rig with this belt kit. Little downside to that.
@@mysticjedi6730 oh I see your thought process. And as a rifleman, I agree it’s better. The difference being that this is a loadout for a machine gunner in a sustainment environment. If you have access to vehicles that’s great, then you take the stuff off the back and stick in a bag and leave in the vehicle or throw on when you dismount. But the machine gun is ALWAYS going to be on the outside of the vehicle in one shape or another. The only exception being helicopter and the troop seats are designed to be used with buttpacks. So again fireteam postion? Yeah take that off maybe suffer a little. MG? If you wanna carry it and can then go for it.
Also stacking tolerance is a thing as far as your shoulders are concerned. I’m not far off from your concept. I use my chest rig placard as a navigation/admin board that happens to have 4 mags. And I’m doing this to clear the space for my assault pack. But again my loadout is basically a rifleman+/DMR role. I’m carrying 3 different optics systems, x2 basic load, and the sustainment/survival gear required for a nonlinear/ lack of supplies conflict for 2 days. Anything past 2 days and you’re most likely defensive at which case things like Rubbermaid totes become a smarter solution.
