Thanks for posting!! I just finished mine!!!! Made a few changes and additions... Stained it dark walnut to see ball better... Made the fold direction opposite to protect table surfaces while in storage... Built a door w/ hinges to fit around some the the support beams underneath to store net, and paddles... Used 1.5" PVC to make a spring loaded ball holder/dispenser along each players side under the playing surface... Added corner brackets on plywood to protect table corners while moving/playing Added a clip on each side to hold it together when it is folded and being moved Thanks again for the help Jon
Thanks for this! The Baltic birch tip was huge! most stores dont think there is anything but 4x 8 plywood. We are making this for our cabin so making it out of wood is really ideal!!
I had thought about buying or building a ping pong table, but knew that we couldn't fit/store it in our apartment. Then I watched your video, and when I saw how you were able to fold it in half using a piano hinge, I thought it was brilliant! I wish I could post a picture of the one I made because it came out awesome - fire truck red with white stripe lines. Ping pong nights at our house have become a regular thing for our family and friends - thanks so much for making this video, I couldn't have done it without you!
Neither the lumbar stores nor the big box stores here (Atlanta, GA) sell 5ft x 5ft sheets of 1/2" Baltic Birch. When I visited, the big box stores (The Home Depot and Lowes) have 4ft x 8ft sheets of 1/2" Birch. When I called, specialty Lumbar yards have Baltic Birch in 4ft x 8ft sheets of 1/2" thickness.
That is the coolest ping pong table i have seen even compared to the expensive Stiga ones i have seen. I've been playing ping pong off and on since the summer of 85-86'. I have a basic folding one i got at Walmart. I am not a handy wood worker or artistic but I like your channel(found it because the skateboard project) and so will my wife so i am going to sub. God bless and I'll be waiting to see your next videos
I used two finished 4 * 8 ft particle board (3/4 inch in thickness) from Home Depo, asked Home Depo to cut them into two 4 * 5 ft and two 1 * 3 ft line up as one 1 * 6 ft for center pieces that with 3/5 inch cut wood joints each side to raise a piece of microfiber as the net. So in short, 4 + 1 + 4 = 9 ft is table length and the 5 ft is the table width for the baselines each side. The net poles are two 3 * 9 inches from the rest of the unused board. Similar 3/4 inch cut wood joints as the base hooking up with the cut wood joints on the 1 * 6 ft center piece each side. I used paper stables every inch along top and bottom to sew the microfiber into tubes so the net strings through the tubes holding the microfiber net straight. Table height standard is 31 inches. I bought four 2 * 4 ft and then cut them into 31 - 3/4 = 30.25 inches as the legs for raising the table. Two 8 ft 2 * 4 lumber wood mounts on those 30.25 inches wide V shape legs as the vertical support horizontally along the table length with appropriate cut wood joints as well so the whole thing can be assembled/disassembled easily.
Hi Jon love your work and clear videos , what was the green tape you used for edging the paint and how did you get the nice curves with the tape at the corners, also you had a green on your pull saw what was that , hope you don't mind all theses question, Graeme
Thank, a really good video. But I have a question. What kind of paint and wood do you use for a professional table?. Because if I use a no aproperated paint ball does not gonna bound, and rule say...from 30 centimentes high balls have to bound 20 centimeteres. Thanks for your time.
I am looking to make a mini for my nieces, John, and I was wondering if the birch laminate gave you any dead spots on the table. If there's a tiny pocket somewhere with no glue, it could deaden the bounce.
Thanks for posting this! We'd love to make a table that can be used outdoors. My understanding is that weather changes can warp "indoor tables," and wonder whether you have ideas about reinforcing this design, if you think it would be needed.
I am making a ping pong table for my graduation project for high school. This video really helped. How could I make bases for my ping pong table when I begin to make it?
Nice Video really helped me on making my own ping pong table but i have a question What is the height of an average ping pong table? like in tournaments Cause mine is just sitting on my pool table but its a hassle to bring the table back up and down
I used Masonite instead with a smooth low friction coating. Besides the different wood i basically did the same thing you did and my table works great. So thanks for an easy video :D
Jon. Thanks for making the video! It's really great and I'm having fun with my table. Could you please make a video showing how to make a base in the future? Thanks again!
Great video. I think you could use the piano hinge on the top side (under the net) to allow one to fold the table 90 degrees to play against a backboard. Just need a way to hold up the vertical panel. This would also help to protect the paint job on the top face.
What type of blue paint did you use for the boundary lines? Also, do you know where I can get folding legs solely for the corners of the table rather than saw horses, or would I have to develop my own?
where did you buy the wood, I have trouble finding 1/2 Baltic birch plywood with the measurements 5ftx5ft in any lumber. Most stores only carry 4x8 ft. Please help
oh, and another thing. If you're not a serious player and just making a table for fun then it doesn't really matter. I play competitive table tennis and most high end tables have a low friction coating.
I want to do a similar project, in fact, I would love to use the same blue striping. A few questions: what kind of paint was it? Also, what was the thickness of the plywood? Thank you!
hi john love youd work. could you help me please. can i use polyurethane clear finish/ yacht varnish over high gloss paint. i want to keep the gloss iv painted on my daughters desk to a good scratch proof conditio.
Are you confident about this for outdoor use? Or are you doing anything additional to safeguard from warping? (e.g. incorporate metal and/or seal in some way?)
Muntecy, you are right. It would be like making a car at a machine shop and by the time you are done, you are in several hundred thousand. It makes no sense unless you are bored and have nothing else to do. Baltic birch plywood is not cheap and overall has an environmental cost well above a purchased table.

That’s fantastic and the table sounds great, thanks for the comment.
I’d love to see a picture!!!!! The red sounds cool! I’m about to try a table myself! Staining, but I think your red and white sounds cool!!!
NICE!!!!!!! I know what I’m doing with my leftover plywood from my next project : )

does it bounce similarly to a real table?
No it doesn't unfortunately, it bounces like an overweight cheap downtown hooker.

How is the bounce? Does it play true to a regulation table?
very nice wood work. you should make some paddles now, finish off the set with some one off custom bats!
nice video, hate the imperial system ... those inches and inches fractions are a headache
I made a similar table to this. Using the Baltic Birch and an old Stiga frame I had. The table collapses and everything! Awesome project
cool project ! one question ? what size is the tool that you used to make the plugs? 5/16 or 3/8 inch
thanks, mike
Now I wanna play ping pong 😆👍
I plan on building a table/top like this for outdoor use. excellent guide.
Did you spray on the lacquer?
nice job, was wondering if its possible to weahter seal that plywood , so i could keep the table outside.. ?

Jon, how much dd the Baltic birch plywood cost for both pieces? And where could I buy it at?
Thank, a really good video. But I have a question. What kind of paint and wood do you use for a professional table?. Because if I use a no aproperated paint ball does not gonna bound, and rule say...from 30 centimentes high balls have to bound 20 centimeteres. Thanks for your time.
do you know what is recommended for table tennis play? low friction or higher friction top?
Good job Mr.Jon

Great video. I just have a question. Should the surface feel soft or rough?
Hi, Jon. Very helpful post. Do you know if Baltic Birch is available oak-veneered?
I am making a ping pong table for my graduation project for high school. This video really helped. How could I make bases for my ping pong table when I begin to make it?
What coating did you use? How high will the ball bounce if drop at a height of 30cm?
23cm
Nice Video really helped me on making my own ping pong table but i have a question What is the height of an average ping pong table? like in tournaments Cause mine is just sitting on my pool table but its a hassle to bring the table back up and down
randyd55 ..2.5ft

Hi Jon, what is the name of that drill press bit you used? Are there any other sizes of that? Great video planning to make one.

+Peter L thanks Peter , yeah that would have been a good idea.

Nice work ! what is the wood of table ?
where did you buy the wood, I have trouble finding 1/2 Baltic birch plywood with the measurements 5ftx5ft in any lumber. Most stores only carry 4x8 ft. Please help
but do not you think you should go with stucco and then paint?
How much was the total cost for building this nice ping pong?
What a wonderful job for sharing with us.
thanks, about 100 - 120
Would it be possible to make a table out of 1/4" BB plywood?
Hi jon,
is Baltic birch plywood as same as MDF bord??
is both are equal??
plz help me

Did make that painting on the wall at the end of your video? Love it!
James Lanigan Thompson yes thanks!
John what kind of chemical did you use to somewhat "laminate" the plywood to make it smooth and glossy? And will regular plywood suffice?
Minwax Poly Acrylic
hi john love youd work. could you help me please.
can i use polyurethane clear finish/ yacht varnish over high gloss paint. i want to keep the gloss iv painted on my daughters desk to a good scratch proof conditio.
I like your videos, you're one of the best guy here
Thank you!

Alguém pode me dizer qual o tipo de madeira que ele ultilisou para ''A mesa''?? agradeço muito.
What are some things to do to this to make it withstand outside rain (folded up when not being played on) ?
Beautiful!
Great table Jon. You should replace Norm Abrams on "This Old House"
how much did this cost?
well I kindda want my pongtable outside whats best idea for logest nicest kook
dude you are a genius!! thumbs all the way uppp!!
This was awesome. Very interesting.
Looks good .
Thanks for sharing.
good job my friend!
First class job.
You have inspired me to build one but i cant find tools :D
Ping Pong tables have to have a matte color, and not so shiny and smooth. The ball would not bounce right.
Cheaper to just buy one.

It makes no sense unless you are bored and have nothing else to do. Baltic birch plywood is not cheap and overall has an environmental cost well above a purchased table.
Uhm... in what world is it cheaper to buy one? Not here
I would make the top removable and leave in my shed when not using. The legs I can leave outside with the other tables I've built.
This is really great. Thanks!
Is it 1/2 inch Baltic ply??
MRGoldensyrup yes Baltic birch plywood
+Jon Peters Art & Home what other type of plywood can i use? because birch plywoods is nowhere to find in my country
Wow you should host "this old house"
H8?
Thank you.
Really thanks this video is great for my activity
Good video! Now please fix that kick drum in the intro song. Pleaseee
What was final cost? About estimate would be fine

yes me 2, ohh wait i'm not lazy so I can do it by myself!!

Too heavy 🤪
Im using woodprix instructions to make it and I do it already :)
Can two 1/2 inch plywoods be glued together to make a 1" table
This was awesome. Very interesting.
