In Greek mythology, it was believed that Vulcan forged weapons for the gods and that his furnace chimneys were volcanos. The composer Alan Holley has been fascinated with underwater volcanos. This music depicts Vulcan and his activities and the subsequent volcanic eruptions both underwater and on the surface. This work was commissioned by Steve Rossé at TubaMania to provide tubists with an orchestral style solo piece challenging CC (or BBb) tuba technique, flexibility, and dynamics while being accompanied by an orchestral trombone section.
