During Meditation, we focus our mind on the object of the meditation. The mind, by its nature, wanders in many directions. However, if we practice Meditation every day, we are exerting our WillPower to stay focused. Eventually, we will succeed in our Meditation, and the WillPower will increase in every other aspect of our life. The best way to Meditate is to focus the mind on the Supreme Lord that way our mind will be purified and elevated as well.

Beautiful answer by Swamiji. Self control is like a muscle. Through our strong will power we can gradually control our mind. But to bring that will power with in us we have to direct our thoughts/attitudes in the proper way.
