    Safety Note - 1:49
    Level 1 - 2:00
    Level 2 - 3:39
    Level 3- 5:24
    Level 4 - 5:49
    Key Takeaway - 7:25
In this video, we wanted to hopefully cover some questions that we had from our last video, namely, if the target is close why not just lunge?
The key takeaway point is that in fencing it’s always possible to make a short attack longer, but you cannot make a long attack shorter. By starting with the point of the blade you can track your target and determine if you need anything more, whereas the classic hit is plenty fast but may result in ‘guessing’ the distance incorrectly.
We’ve included a drill that we believe helps reinforce this point.
As always, fencing is our passion, and we accept that we can be wrong about things, so feel free to ask away in the comments! We just think this method of hitting makes a lot of sense, and a truly great fencer can incorporate both striking styles into their game.
Stay safe and see you in our next video!

Really like this for working on distance within a limited space. Good work chaps.

It's intersting that you are describing what George Silver Called True Times in 1599. Time of the hand, hand body, hand body foot and hand body feet.
I was taught and teach, though not directly through modern fencing. That hand moves first. Only if distance requires it do I move my foot or feet.

Not sure why you’re calling the other one a “classic” lunge. Doing it with the arm extension first before committing to the footwork actually looks more classical to me.
