- In this episode Michael showcases all of the various types of leathers and alligator skins he uses to make his bespoke watch straps. He’s going to be using parts of the second half of this show to make Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) videos for his website. With being emailed questions on a daily basis, hopefully these FAQ videos will help to answer many of the questions people repeatedly ask. He highlight all of his Horween Shell Cordovan and Chromexcel Leathers, Shinki Hikaku Shell Cordovan Leathers, Rocado Shell Cordovan Leathers, along with the various lining leathers he uses, which include Zermatt Calfskin Leathers. Then he show what he makes the Pads out of, and spacer leather he uses. Lastly he shows all of the North American Alligator Skins he has.

Very interesting
Thanks Pat! MK
Great video on the different leathers, Michael! Thanks for sharing your expert opinions on them. That whiskey-colored Shinki Hikaku cordovan is pretty tempting! 😉 It was fun to see my orange alligator strap featured briefly, too. 💕 It has molded to my wrist and become even more comfortable over time. Love it!
Thanks Allison! Yes it is, and I don't have it listed yet because I want to make some personal things out of it first. If you'd like a strap made from it please let when you're ready and I'll make you a special order form. Hope you and your husband have a wonderful Thanksgiving! MK

Good info, Michael. Had no idea about Nile croc vs North American Gator and porousness. Cool! Keep at it!
Thanks Mark! MK
Good morning brother. I think this was one of your best ever videos. I learned a lot about the leathers that I don't use. Thanks again, keep growing your channel...10K here we come.
Thanks Brother, I wish you and your family are happy and safe Thanksgiving! MK
@@StrapaWatch back at you pal
I just found your channel and have been absolutely binging. Where do you source you alligator skins from (or is that a secret)? Do you add your own dye to the alligator? That midnight blue looks incredible! Keep up the great content.
Thank you yellowtippet! I use a few different sources for alligator skins, but for about the last year I've been mainly using American Tanning & Leather, AMTAN.com. I do sometimes dye the alligator straps, like from a light blue to a dark royal blue, or light brown to dark brown, but most of the time I'm able to get the color skins that I want and are most popular. I'm glad you like my shows, and look forward to getting to know you better. Merry Christmas! MK
Hi Michael, learned a lot from you. I am a beginner to leathercrafting and very interested in making watch straps. I watched many strap making videos using padding so I am aware of it but not the spacer so I am confused how does a padding differ from a spacer. Appreciate any response or a link to one of your videos featuring a spacer. Currently binging your videos so I might see it eventually though. Cheers!

This was a great video, I was specifically looking for Horween vs Shinki and you covered it well! (Which tannery is more pliable?)
I’d be very interested in finding out how one should price items when dealing with these speciality materials? Not to be in your business, but if a customer wants a specific color hide, say the $1500 one, but we’re only going to use a small portion of it, how do we be fair in charging them but also recognize that I have a $1400 piece of leather left over in a color no one else may ever want? Would it be fair to pass the entire cost of that special hide on to the customer? This could mean a lot of money tied up in materials especially to a newer business without a dedicated clientele.
( I make footwear using exotics and have found this quite difficult to maneuver. Unlike regular leather that can be bought in sides and sometimes panels, exotics are all or nothing. If I use half or 1/3 of a hide should I charge them for the entire piece??)
Thanks! They’re about the same… MK
Quick question, the shiny alligator is known for being prone to stain with water. I've heard that if a drop of water falls into it, it will leave a water mark/the area won't be shiny anymore. Is this true?
Thanks for the question! I have several alligator straps that I’ve made for myself, many are nearly 2 years old and they still look great. I’ve been caught in rain storms, been boating and gotten all wet, and never had the problem you’ve mentioned. I strictly use Genuine North American Alligator, which I truly believe is the very best of all the various species. Hope this helps to answer your question? MK
@@StrapaWatch thank you for the answer.
Is that a 2-tone strap you are wearing?
Thanks for the question Bob! No, it has Double Row Stitching. I did a show on it and here's the link: ruclips.net/video/pjbxcWv2vws/видео.html
