  • Most songs in ‘The American Songbook’ begin with 8 bars of music which are repeated, followed up by 8 different bars and then the original 8 bars to complete the song. This structure is often called AABA.
One day while listening to ‘What’s New’ which was written by Bob Haggard in 1939, I noticed that the “B” part was simply a key change of the first 8 bars. So, Mr. Haggard managed to write a popular song with only 8 bars of original music.
One night in a local bar I was talking to a musician about this and he mentioned that he had lived in New York City in the same apartment as Bob. This was in the early 80’s when Linda Ronstadt included ‘What’s New’ in one of her popular albums, giving the old song new life but also giving Mr. Haggard a substantial injection of cash from the royalties…. all for only 8 bars of music.
