My personal favorite track from that album is " Solitude." Tony lommi flute playing and Ozzy's vocals are very unique. Thank you for sharing this classic album.
I'm softening in my enthusiasm for VMP too, debating a pause, but we strongly disagree on the ZZ Top. I loved it. Energetic and punchy like my US OG, clean with great bass. I love it....and I love your videos. Keep 'em coming!
Yeah I thought Tres Hombres was great. People like different things though.
Great to have you back with videos rather than the too long live streams. More of these please and thank you for taking the time to make them.
Thanks Michael, I was just in the mood for something like this today. Nice.
As always, it is appreciated to hear an honest and detailed review. I will be investing in this VMP reissue, and look forward to future reviews and discussions. Thank you, Michael.
Fantastic Michael! This is my favourite Black Sabbath album. Boy would I love to have that OG vertigo label...from anywhere! U.K. or Germany. I have the green label WB from Canada around 1979, which sounds good to my ears. Love how you articulated this one, as I find you usually do. Thank you for sharing. I may look into this reissue as it is my fave like I said. Take care Michael. Cheers! Mark. ✌️🍻🤘🎶🤘
Can't wait to listen to it
Hätte ich jetzt nicht gedacht dass du auch solche Musik hörst äußerst cool!!!
Great to have you back doing the short videos on specific releases. I really enjoy these - specially when you are able to compare to original releases.
I am a little sad that you left doing MoFi releases and now also want to leave VMP. This could lead to pure show cases of Analogue Productions products.
Where have you been these days, no new videos Michael?😁
I got out of the subscription model as well. Will just buy what interests me.
Just picked up the 79’ WB usa pressing yesterday. Has 3 great reviews on discogs. Gonna clean it up and spin it tomorrow.
The VMP MoR release is amazing! Quality packaging and treatment, all analogue, I'm extremely happy with it. Cheers!
Thanks for your honest opinion.
I agree with you in relation to vmp pressing. It's very mixed. But the reissue of Nina Simone is excellent
So disappointed I missed this! I don’t know how I didn’t hear about it! I am still on there mailing list, no one I saw in the VC talked about it. They need to get the message out better!
VMP opened their own pressing plant. I guess they own and operate it, a guy from QRP formally Acoustic Sounds will be heading it. Harry Nilsson re-pressings from VMP just arrived. Black Sabbath, sold out. No doubt the Fleetwood Mac will be also. Cut the membership? But forget nabbing pressings like Black Sabbath, they'll go first to members only and what's left over will disappear extremely fast. I heard they will re-press their Blue Note box set, hopefully. They're issuing 'Silver Apples of the Moon', no mad rush on that probably.
Reply
Harry Nilsson a sweet two pressings.
maybe you're no longer interested because you are now primarily a retailer ? The VMP'S mastered by Ryan Smith have never sounded better and the titles are varied and surprising.
Its funny how Michael said Mike from the Ingroove had NO credibility talking about albums or reviewing them as he sells them. (I believe he has now deleted that video) Now here is Michael with his own store selling records reviewing them and talking about other companies….
ah one of my most favourite bands and albums
you should finish listening to a Sabbath album a little more scared than when you started!!
Seems many of us are reaching the same conclusion: the excitement factor is marginalized.
I just renewed for six months with some hesitancy. Going to wait until the next batch is announced and decide to pause or continue.
Good take on this. I can't see myself ever getting another VMP. I have a few, but they're nothing I couldn't have gotten as either an original, or from another label. As for the subscription, I don't like having any records in my collection that I didn't choose. I guess VMP ok if you want a specific record, it's not easy to find elsewhere, and the price is right, otherwise, pass.
I have three titles a month from VMP, for just over a year now. Without a long statement ref quality; I am also becoming a little frustrated with the titles on offer and completely agree with the comment about maybe one decent one every few months. I shall continue for a few months and then decide if it’s worth continuing. Currently, I feel money is better spent on titles I want elsewhere.
Yah Genow!
based on your words, I think that I'll like the VMP version way better. I've always found Master Of Reality to be quite "muddy" and "midrangy", which has been the case for me with the few german pressings (none of them 1st pressings I think) that I've got, they tend to boost the midrange in general, something similar to the way most 50s-60s records were mastered (before we got the amazing current AAA reissues ). Just a matter of taste I guess.
The uK tapes are very different from the US, (Warner) Germany was smart enough to ask for their own production masters and the US production masters were already EQed IIRC
I would like to get one from vinyl me please but they are all gone😢
Some pressings are different vs. better, and I assume this title will get a repress. I’ve asked a VC person who is a member of VMP to grab me a copy when it does, as I am not, nor do I necessarily want to be. The few VMP records I do have do sound quite good, but I’ve heard others don’t, as you touched upon. Appreciate your thoughts on this pressing. Thanks Michael.
My only experience with Black Sabbath “Master of Reality” is the green label Warner Brothers version from the 1970’s. I have not heard any of the reissues, or original pressings outside of the U.S.A. The one that I have heard was great. I bought it in the 1970’s as a teenager. It was a very popular album here. If I were to buy another copy of the album, it would likely be a UK or German first press Vertigo. If I want to listen to it casually, I will just stream it. It is a great album.
Thank you. Very interesting. A UK 1st will blow you away. The German is also excellent.
I fully agree... That is the reason why I prefer the later 2016 Sean Magee UK pressing of Paranoid rather than the earlier 2010 Kevin Gray pressing, although many prefer it. I feel that way for EXACTLY the same reasons you explain about these. The Sean Magee is much darker and I feel much more similar to the sound of the original UK Vertigo pressing. Dark... Kevin's master is brighter and some people like it better, but like you I prefer the darker sound of the original. I have the WWA pressing with the original Vertigo stampers so I have a good point for comparison. The same is true with the WWA MOR with the original UK Vertigo stampers which I have, it sounds very dark. Whereas the more recent Chris Bellman pressing, although quite good and dynamic, does not quite have the original darker sound.
BTW, the recent VMP pressing of the Grateful Dead's Anthem of the Sun is quite excellent! For the very first time you are getting the original mix in an Audiophile pressing. I guess I overpaid though... I bought it separately, paid about $45 and currently copies are selling on Discogs for about $27 😊 Most definitely worth it though!
I’ll take either … The 2016 deluxe I have is kind of a let down… great video!
Dont know if people know this but if you wait they are repressing master of reality and you don't need the subscription to purchase it
I preordered mine it's due out in July
I’ve no interest in vinyl as a format, and it’s incompatible with my living situation & finances, but I do collect CDs (to which many of the same principles apply) and I find your commentary really enjoyable. Especially comparing old pressings to each other - even within an album’s launch year there are different interpretations of how it should sound! It’s fascinating.
I’ve not heard this album on vinyl, but I have heard the 2016 Black Sabbath remasters, which were basically vinyl masters pressed to CD (erroneously I think - they didn’t even apply an RIAA curve), as well as the 2009s and some 80s pressings.
To me, on my system, I’ve not heard this album sound better than it did on the 1996-2004 CD releases. That’s sacrilege, I know - they were perhaps the most compressed - but the guitar & bass were more forward and just sounded right. There was less perceived “emptiness” in the mix, which I don’t think suited the album. After Forever is a proper headbanger on that remaster. It could well be quite bright - I have an intentionally rather dark/warm system, so couldn’t tell you.
Master Tapes for Black Sabbath vary from country to country.
Take Paranoid for instance. The best sounding pressing is a German NEMS fried egg. Even when compared with a German Vertigo. Too much money to chase them all.
Wieso musst du denn immer alle aus dem batch nehmen? ich habe immer eine subscription laufen und wenn ein add on mir gefällt nehme ich das dazu? Bin mal auf das neue Werk gespannt und dide Qualität des Vinyl.
Nailed it Michael! Black Sabbath should never delve into the realms of sounding bright.
i've never really liked the production on this Black Sabbath album. LOVE the first 5 or 6 Sabbath albums but this one has the the most closed off, non-uniform production across the album. Vol. 4 that followed was their masterpiece IMO. My guess is Smith tried to 'open' up the sound a little bit, since the original album sounds like it was recorded in a closet with 1 of the 2 doors shut!!!
The drums on some of these I would assume as great.
VMP is repressing this correct?
I canceled my VMP subscription this month. Right after the Black Sabbath, which I really liked. But I just got bored with most of their recent releases…
€280 a month??? Holy shit. Do you subscribe to all the tracks? Perhaps a better option would be to just stick to 1 or 2?
It’s also VERY OOP at VMP :(
I bailed a year ago
Right now, I’m only with VMP for Harry Nilsson AAA releases. They released 3 so far. They’ve 3 more to do this year. As soon as they’re are done with the series, I am out.
I'm a womble - early pressings are where its at for me these days. much better sound and often cheaper !
The criticism of Vinyl Me Please (from the SQ perspective) may be somewhat unfair when you are constantly comparing to clean UK/German 1st pressings...very hard for modern reissues to beat clean originals. And of course there's the discussion to be had about 'value' due to price difference.
ALS WÄRE ES DAS WICHTIGSTE AUF DER WELT.. DIE HABE ICH SCHON (!) 1970 GEHÖRT
4 panel poster vs 6 panel poster isn't that 2/3? not 1/3? The VMP poster is cropped a little more on the top where the trees are.
M O R is the only ESSENTIAL B S album IMO
Been out of VMP club for a while now. For the $ not impressed.
Just watched your video you did a month ago re favourite albums and how you love “Machine Gun”. I went to Spotify and had a fast forward listening and all I can say is you need help. Time to visit a shrink.
Reissues are less and less exciting for me
You pretty much like all kind of crap !
