Hi , I agree some strikers are just plane BAD, I have some fire steels from firesteel dot com that are great and come with nice strikers and my Strike Force is a great one too, I've modified one of my Mora knives with a half moon on the spine edge to strike a ferro rod and that works great, that way you don't have to carry an extra knife too! I've practiced this many times and got a great tip from TheWoodsman Joe, just hold your rod to the ground in the middle of the bundle and strike, this allows the sparks to go straight into the tender bundle and not fly around so much and it works like a dream.
