my personal connection with this song was that when i was 18 and starting to stress about being in the public eye with my major-label record coming out, a man i was in love with looked me in the eye and said "let me be your mirror", don't trust that doubting voice in your head (this part i'm paraphrasing). that man was jeff buckley, an amazing artist, who died a year later - a few weeks before my first album was released.
the velvet underground were the original brooklyn hipsters. they had a 'deconstructed' style and a rebellious attitude, and although they often wrote catchy pop songs, they often did something in the performance to make the song less accessible and more 'underground'. in this case, they had nico sing. she was a beautiful german woman with a low, pitch-imperfect style of singing.
lyrics:
I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are
In case you don't know
I'll be the wind
the rain and the sunset
the light on your door
to show that you're home
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty that you are
But if you don't
Let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness
So you won't be afraid
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
I'll be your mirror
I'll be your mirror
Normally I'm not at all a fan of covers, but I truly enjoyed your rendition. I like that you looked into the lens and sang with no affectation. Few people can accomplish either of those confidently (therefore successfully), let alone both, but you did! You have a lovely voice and play prettily. Brava! Many thanks!
This is one if my favourite songs of all time, and you have perfectly captured the softness & beauty in Nico’s voice in the original and the guitar is perfect. Really incredible cover
Beautifully sung and arranged
The more I listen to these well-done covers the more I appreciate how great the original is. Lovely tribute, Lauren.
thanks so much 🙏🏼 i really enjoyed figuring out these songs for the same reason
@@laurenhoffmanmusic Thanks, more success. 🙂
This is a wonderful cover and you have a lovely voice, earning admiration for your playing and singing 7 years later:)
I hope you are well and those close to you get to hear your wonderful voice in this dark time
Perfect rendition
This Is so beautiful Lauren, I've listened it 5 times in a row thank you!!
Beautiful
Thats what i want, when i come in at 9am after an allnight speed binge. You are the starry dynamo in the machinery of night..x
love it haha :)
This is my favorite song, your cover popped up after searching, it had been a while. But it all worked out. Very nice
Literally crying so beautiful
Just wanted to tell you I love your choice of covers and general musical everything. Your in-depth video descriptions are also really appreciated. The fusion of historical and auto-biographical empowers the song through better context. Have you thought doing more long-form writing?
Your recollection of an affirming lover reminded me of what Bill Wyman wrote about the song:
"Reed thought that feeling "twisted" could warp someone's very identity, their own understanding of who they were. "Please put down your hands" may be the key line here, a powerful image of someone covering himself up, erasing himself. "You" and "your" appear in every line, as the singer tries to pair their humanity, replacing the other's dark self-image with the one she sees. Isn't this one of the most profound love songs of the era?"
Anyway, I hope if ever you're discouraged you always look to the affirming power of some sweeter reflection, and keep making music! It's really good!
awwwww, thank you so much Shane!! i DID actually write a longer-form piece for an online mag you can check it out here if you like: massmovement.co.uk/?p=14383
your encouraging comments are very much appreciated :)
Lauren,
I read your piece; You are a very good writer. The essay is exactly what I meant :) A few favourite parts:
The lines, "All my life, David Bowie had been there, like trees, like air, and I took him for granted," could be the opening lines of a novel. Very memorable. And I've never heard someone describe the talents of Jeff Buckley so succinctly ("Nina Simone and Robert Plant rolled into one" is beyond perfect.)
Your essay also exposed me to the works of PJ Harvey. I will now peruse her discography. And the opening about your father was very moving. You hit it on the nail about Rubber Soul and the Beatles. It's like that quote from High Fidelity, "...though they'll make me feel something, they won't make me feel anything bad." I hope you write more long-form pieces in the future.
On another note, Sick of Love knocked me out. I do a music show for public radio and your song will be playing today throughout Alaska :)
that's wonderful to hear! thanks so much!
好好听!好喜欢❤❤
A quiet and beautiful feeling❤❤
My favorite album as a teenager (and probably still) was Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground Live -1969 Part 1. Some of the songs are almost unrecognizable, but they have this groove to them... it's a low that feels good. Eno was right: anyone that listened to them ran out and formed a band, even if it was just friends in a basement for a spell. They made you want to make music. Great cover! :)
I just love this version of this song with her voice. 💗
I am from Argentina....
it's 01:10 in the morning ... and I'll see you right now.
I love your voice and I hope you know, that from this side of the world there is admiration !!!
that you walk well !!!
Thank you Andres! I hope to visit Argentina one day, everyone I have met from there is really cool :)

I agree; she looks so much like Mr. Dylan, without prejudice to her 100% feminine appearance.

Along with you being beautiful, having a beautiful voice and doing a beautiful cover... Lou Reed wrote some great songs didn't he?
Hey would it be ok if I used this for an animation that I wanted to do? Just the audio?
Silver Sparrow Animations I don’t mind but you know I didn’t write it so technically I can’t give you permission for that part, you know what I mean?
@@laurenhoffmanmusic yeah. I get that. Thank you though
Silver Sparrow Animations If its just for youtube or yourself I don’t think it matters too much?
@@laurenhoffmanmusic yeah especially if it's a cover. And I'll credit both you and the artist.
So nice. What are you doing these days musically?
Andrew Lockwood thanks very much! well i'm working on a new album with my new band. lots of stuff to announce in the new year :)
Thats a beautiful lady
this is gorgeous, it sounds like a lullaby. can you please post tabs?
Thanks Dolores! Sorry I don’t know/use/make tabs :( I think someone posted the chords in another comment tho?
Wow this is so lovely! Also, you look like you could be bob dylans sister
Did Dylan and Karen Black have a baby?
Does anybody know these chords?
Sure there! This young lady starts by playing a G, then a C, then back to G, then she starts singing on a D-chord (while leaving the high-e-string open or muted), then a G, then a C, back to the D-chord. After that it's basically always either a G,C, or D-chord. Like there's a few sections which are just C, D, G in that order. Until that is the "Please put down your hands" line where it goes to A-minor, then C, then D. And then for the instrumental part, she's using that same D-chord shape, but hammering on and off on the g-string (that sounded dirty), then it goes back to the G, C, G, D thing. In summation: the chords are always either G, C,D, or A-minor. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Jon Byrne I believe it is all up half a tone to G#, the same with the rest of the notes, if Im correct. I tried this song out on the rebel bass. pffffffffff
she does look like Bob Dylan
Perfect.... Marry me.
don't call them hipsters. they were the first punks.
Marry me
Can you marry me? That would be great.
Can we get married plz
Estas buena? No
Cantas bien? Sí
Me importa lo segundo.
