I have a magical story of cicadas.... every morning and every evening on our US military base in Japan the national anthems of both countries were blasted over loudspeakers... one year the cicadas came out and I just happened to be walking to work early in the morning (beautiful clear sunny morning) under the trees where the cicadas were making their normal ear-splitting racket..... THEN the music started playing and ALL THE CICADAS MATCHED THE MUSICAL TONES AND TEMPO OF THE MUSIC UNTIL IT WAS OVER!!! I had to stop and stand at attention anyway (military rules) but I was stopped right under the trees so I was immersed in their energy, .Right away I could tell something in the cicadas song had changed, but my brain was trying to figure it out....when I did, I couldn't believe it, oh 'ell no...there's no (frkn) way they're matching the music!! but they were!! for 2 whole songs!! Thousands of them and they were all "singing" in unison!! Their vibrations were so strong they were vibrating ME!! just like bass and drums do in a disco!! OMG!! When the music stopped, I just stood there for a while more and listened and they all went back to their normal "all taking at once" vibrating patterns.... un freakn believable!! There were no witnesses to it, no one believed me, but it happened... sometimes you get lucky and get to witness pure magic... something in the sound of the music turned them all into little musicians, a cicada symphony, for a few minutes that day... never ever forget those few moments!!

Im just seeing this. The Cicadas are out here in the Eastern United States. Im in West Central Georgia. We are having a 17 yrs cycle and a 13 year cycle. Wont happen again until 2234 I think. There upteen million in my little paradise.
From what I have read, they have antimicrobial wings that are waterproof and self cleaning. Thinking maybe bandaid should look at this, lol. While in the ground they clean the soil and water around them.
One thing is for sure, they are Very Loud 📢. The cats love to eat them, the dog loves them, and the Chickens have gained 10 lbs. In the last week.
Cool video 😎 thanks for putting it up!

Sólamente una vez pude ver una de esas chicharras aquí en Málaga (España) y se la estaba comiendo una Mantis Religiosa.
La chicharra no paraba de hacer ese sonido incluso mientras estaba siendo devorada.

In the Southeast of the US, the wings, eyes and legs of the cicadas are orange! Whereas in my home state of Michigan they're overall green wings with splotches of green on the body and dark green to blackish legs. Amazing creatures...

Hello :) Oh the cicadas this year.. I'm not too far from you (I hadn't seen your youtube channel and videos until late yesterday when your hugelkultur video popped into my feed. I was so excited and clicked straight on it as I love all things gardening/permie/local, but I had to stop peeking as I had an artwork due today. As random as things can get, right after learning of you via your video last night I just happened to meet Mrs Weedy today!! 😳☺. What a season we've had.. I didn't get as much gardening done as usual because when I was outside I had to have my hands over my ears.. Truly! We've had all the usual cicada types here before, but this year we've just said farewell (impatiently, and thank goodness) to what looks a bit like your Black Prince eventually but hatches with a dusty coating and is known as Floury Miller for that floury reason. It looked very camouflaged against a pale mottled trunk.. and then the white eventually rubs off .. We haven't heard Floury Miller before, but, eek, it is so high pitched and it shrieks from dawn to post dusk.. it starts with one high 'hiss', and then more join in, and it's deafening. I reckon they're louder than the 120 DCB and there are so many of them.

I'm a bit late viewing this, sorry, missed somehow. The cicadas are deafening but I love it. It means Summer and holidays. As kids we used to put the shells on our clothes as decoration. Thanks for a beautiful video once again and the info about the cicadas making different noises. I didn't know that. Have a great year!

Growing up i had such bad headaches. I would be in bed for hours with lights or and curtains closed with a pillow over my head to another the sounds of those bugs! I kinda hated them because i could not escape their noise during those headaches. My son calls the headaches the family curse. At 60 8 no longer have the headaches and long to hear the sound. I don't recall hearing it this year.
