Thx for the review! I just started Gardens of the Moon and am in it for the long game like i was with memory, sorrow and thorn. But these long series do get exhausting.
The Library of Allenxandria it’s grand. My scale has a “rough” outline but sometimes a 6 and venture into 8 territory based on me thinking from an objective review. I need something to clarify this to an audience
@@KDbooks Totally get that. I've actually made a separate video as well just explaining my own and its genesis. Nothing wrong clarifying a rating system!
Bro you have the best male voice of all the Americans on booktube. Also I'm loving the first Django Wexler books. Thank you so much for the military fantasy recommendations. They are really scratching my newfound itch for military fantasy and fiction
This review was fantastic! Anyone who has read Gardens of the Moon would get how well you described it. This might be one of the most difficult books to explain in a concise video. I'm so impressed! This may also be the only time I've ever enjoyed listening to someone read a book blurb! 😂
This was awesome. I've only read gardens of the moon and I remember being really excited to get into the series. After reading it I thought Jesus what did I get myself into. My saving grace was I had just finished the Silmarillion so any book after that I was gonna breeze through. I did like the book a lot. I especially liked the character, Hairlock. Twisted and awesome. Anyways I kinda bailed on trying to tackle the series. I just finished Black Company (book 1) I can see how Erickson was influenced by Glen Cook. After the first book I feel like I can confidently tackle the series, which is what I wanted to feel at the end of gardens of the moon.
Lol, freaking Hairlock! I loved his insanity, but I absolutely hated him because of it! I literally just finished filming a Black Company review because it's one of my favorite series ever, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the first book (kind of like Gardens of the Moon lol). Malazan gets much better in Book 2,and I think the series really hits its stride during the back half of Book 3 onward. Read both series in their entirety, though if you're not feeling like tackling a million and a half words, go Black Company first lol.
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria hell yeah. I was wondering if you liked black company. I just finished it yesterday and I'm gonna record my review today. I shoot and edit very crudely so it's kinda painful to watch (still learning a lot). I try to make up for it with humor and energy. I thought I heard you say you're a teacher. Well I was probably more like one of the disruptive kids in the classroom, but I can say I'm excited about listening to you. Hope to bounce books off one another.
I really appreciate this review Allen!! Thank you very much!! ... I was considering starting the series, but your negatives are very big for my current mood and taste I fear. I would start skimming through the pages instead of reading whenever things don't make sense. Why to waste my time reading something I am no understanding at all? One thing is not understanding a few things and gathering hints to learn along the way, and another thing is to have 50% of what you read being gibberish. ... In other series I've used also another trick, and it does not go very well in many cases. The trick is to read only one character's POV, and I went even through several books reading only this character's POV. Or for example I read the protagonists, but skip anything narrating the antagonist's side. I want to be suprised by the enemy's actions and not know in advance the enemy's plans.
Just finished Gardens of the Moon and I think you described it better than anyone so far. Especially if you were trying to describe it to someone who hasn't read it. The only thing I would disagree with you on is where you said he made you care about the characters. There were only two characters really that I cared at all about. It was a great book but at least by the end of the first book, any of these characters could have died and I wouldn't have cared that much.
Not having the magic explained and being dropped into the middle of things didn't really bother me. I found it refreshing to not have things explained to me all the time but having to guess what was going on and how it worked from the clues given.
Did you make up the term "plot armour"? If so, I might need to steal this! Love it! I'm so intrigued by the Malazon series; just not sure if I want to commit to another lengthy series quite yet, haha.
I did not make that up, actually! It's just the trope of MCs needing to survive because without them there is no plot lol. I actually JUST finished a collab with 3 other guys about people looking to start Malazan and the barriers to entry. Hopefully that should be out soon!
Big time Malazan fan here, and you absolutely nailed the first book. I hope you keep posting for the rest of the series.
Thanks! I've got reviews for DG and MoI already filmed, so it's just a matter of getting them edited and out there. The rest are coming as well!
I greatly enjoy your epic reading voice and would love to hear your interpretation of what different characters would sound like!

Love the transparency of your rating scale. It’s solid. No qualms. Easy to understand.
Thanks so much! It's a scale my friends and I have used to rate things since college.

@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria also if you are going to put out a black company review do you mind if I shout out your channel when I do mine?

You are my new favorite book reviewer. Keep it up!
oh my gosh, thank you!
Just get into the Malazan series, looking forward to the whole series reviews!
I have reviews for 8 and 9 filmed, but I haven't edited them yet. I didn't enjoy them immensely, especially 8. 😛
Nailed it. I absolutely agree with the contents of your review.

I'm going to read this in may so nervous I have other series to finish this year
How is it going? I'm on the 6th book and I'm loving it!
