Prince Henry was a masterful commander, he was consistently great, he never made the blunders his older brother did. its clear that Frederick was jealous of him but had no choice but to make use of his talents.
Frederick needed Prince Henry as well as other competent, high performing Generals in the field slogging it out and making significant gains, irregardless of personal feelings or vendettas he may or may not have held, as great of a man and military genius Freddie boi was, one lone grizzled genius could not decisively win a large scale conflict by himself!
A great series is now ended. What a great journey it was. One day I just searched about the mollwitz and I found a new series. Since then more and more work came out and more and more we came to knew about parts of History. Thank you very much sir.
It's both quite interesting that the final Prussian victory of this war was won by Frederick's brother. But it also proves that the King had good lieutenants under him even if they were family. Great video.
Wow, 1 year of videos, 29 videos and 22 years of peace and war. Your series on Frederick the Great has greatly evolved your content and made you one of the best history channels on earth. Just want to ask, whether your Hanoverian front videos will come anytime soon?
@@HoH Cool, Hastenbeck while not a very well known battle was directly responsible for the occupation of Hanover. I hope you will cover battles like Minden, Kloster Kamp and Vellinghausen.
All I can say is bravo and well done. I've been watching this series since the 1758 campaign, and it has truly been one of the best things I have ever watched. The level of detail is amazing, while still keeping me constantly on the edge of my seat despite knowing the outcome. It's truly a mix of the best history RUclips has to offer, the amazing detail, the great medium and the sheer epicness, as well as a truly great reach. Bravo again, and out of curiosity what will be the next such project?
Thank you for the kind words! I am currently working on the German Wars of Unification, the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49 and the Hanoverian front of the Seven Years' War.
@@HoH Oh, the first one sounds great. Will we see any focus on the Transylvanian front? As a Romanian, it's often emphasized as the first time Romanian nationhood became a concept that spread from the intelligentsia to the common people, yet other than that, very little is taught about what actually happened there.
He did it! Frederick risked it all, brought Prussia from the edge of defeat, from the edge of everything-and won! Throughout this whole series to the end I found myself rooting for Old Fritz-and who didn't? It is a great shame that his successors (save for Otto von Bismack) would not be nearly as apt, and would muddle it all for the sake of vainglory. As a history major, I earnestly look forward to what you tackle next!
Honestly, the crimes of unending hubris committed by Wilhelm II are unforgivable. This man did not stop at only making a few blunders, or making many small mistakes. But instead, he made many blunders.
I wonder, in a scale from 1 to 100, how much did Maria Theresa hate Frederick's guts. It would have been a sight, to see them both having a tea face to face, for "diplomatic" purposes.
I studied the seven years war with a great deal of interest. I pored over books and Wikipedia, and collected maps of troop movements and battles. But it is with great pleasure that I say that all my previous understanding of the seven years war was severely incomplete until I watched this series. Bravo, sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman. I see two other things that you could focus on after this. The Pitt government utilized the 7 years war to make strident gains against other colonial empires across the various oceans and seas. It was truly a masterful stroke to involve continental Europe in a conflagration while it captured the jewels of India, Caribbean and Africa, not to mention British America that would later become Canada. You could focus on the British side of things. The other is the precursor to the war of Austrian succession and the 7 years war (that you have covered so masterfully). The 9 Years war, the glorious revolution and the war of Spanish succession would set the stage to what Europe looked like when Maria Theresa and Frederick appeared on the scene. These wars are truly fascinating, and whatever you do in the future, you have a sincere supporter. As a side anecdote, when Frederick signed the peace and came back to Berlin, a throng appeared to welcome him. He disguised himself and used other routes to get back to his palace at Potsdam. He was at his desk and working early next morning. The man was definitely a hard worker, if nothing else. He would also set up the first forms of a socialist benefits system for the families of the soldiers who died in the war. Also, Prince Henry (who is one of the most competent commanders and one of my favorites) was at one point offered the Kingship of the United States! Frederick strongly protested, so Henry turned the position down
I am a 3rd generation Canadian but both sides of my family can be traced back to Prussia. I feel a connection to this history knowing my ancestors likely fought in the 7 years war.
It's crazy thinking how close Prussia was to no longer existing and yet Frederick the Great kept it alive and well, we all know what happened in the years since.
Please create a detailed historical series similar to Fredrick the Great and Prussia for 1) The War of the Spanish Succession 2) American Revolution 3) American Civil War
First off, how dare you end this series reminding us Prussia was abolished. Secondly, my suggestion for study would be Frederick the Great Elector. He's an often overlooked figure in favor of his great grandson, but empowered his electorate at a critical moment in history, saving it from subjugation by Sweden, Poland, Austria, and France, even as most other German states fell in line. He was also Chad enough to say no to the Polish King's thot of a sister.
Hello there, this was a riveting account and series of documentaries on the three separate Silesian wars! You did so much great work and research, and brought it back to life tremendously well. I don't know of any other documentary or streaming group to have spoken about these conflicts in detail. You mentioned making suggestions for future videos. As I was thinking, you seem to do conflicts in the Early Modern Period so well, I was interested if you could make a series on the French Revolutionary Wars prior to Napoleon's Empire? The French Revolutionary Wars from 1789-1802 between the new French Republicans and the French Royalists, Austrians, Prussians, Russians, and British are interesting but so confusing. I think you would do a great job bringing this history to light since it seems no one else has attempted to make videos on it. Thank you again for this marvelous series, I learned so much that I never knew before. I look forward to seeing more of what you create! Danke!
Huge compliments for this great series! I listened to an biography on Catherine the Great and always wanted to learn about Frederick, who only came up in blurbs in that book

Wow. Great series. The whole one power standing alone thing, while it's definitely what catches the attention, always struck me as a chimera. Yes Prussia beat the odds, but it it could easily have gone the other way. (You don't use a term like "Miracle" if everything's going according to plan.) Bismarck's preference for having lots of allies always struck me as more sensible. Tellingly Frederick took care to not repeat the situation. When we're looking at it now the Seven Years' War can feel like a great story but this was all real people. Your mention of the way the Saxons were treated as an exploitable resource was a chilling reminder of that.
It doesn't mean standing alone is preferrable, just that they were able to when needed. And the common people were exploitable resources throughout the wars - they were the cannon fodder for this realignment of power and life didn't change for them in the end.
@@recoil53 Both good points. Still even by eighteenth century standards "carrying off large numbers of women to aid in repopulation" is horrifying. What I was trying to say with the Chimera comment is that people were drawn to Frederick's victory in the Seven Years War as something to repeat. In fact, even with a military genius leading Prussia, it took an outrageous amount of luck for the war to not end in Prussian defeat. There's a reason that Frederick's approach in the War of Bavarian Succession was so different. That war might not make such a good story but it shows Prussia following a much more realistic approach.
