  • You need proper building protection and water drainage behind your deck ledger to increase the longevity of your home and deck installation. If you don't put much thought into this step of deck building, then you will suffer some consequences down the road.

    Great explanation Kody. The relief cuts are a huge help here in Northern Vermont. Can't thank you enough for your well spoken knowledge and building advice. Hope all is well

    Double ledger, one half drilled for lags. More meat for stringer ties. Great video!

    Unless you have a waterfall, those relief cuts are useless. Moisture will just wick into it.

    Thanks for the video! I am going to be attaching a deck to the back of my house. The house is wrapped in 3/4" foam. Is it fine to screw the ledger board directly on top.of the foam to the rim joist?
    I run a similar RUclips channel to yours so it's great to see how you're doing. Keep it up! Where are you based out of?
    Thanks!

      I would avoid attaching it on top of the foam but if you do I would lag bolt it.
      I’m from Alberta, Canada. What’s your channel name? Where you from?

    At 2:50, it appears that you will be putting the 1-1/2" decking on the ledger but UNDER the top drip cap, which might serve to direct water to the back side of the ledger. Should the top drip be bent down to cover the top and a bit of the side of the ledger, then the decking installed on top of the drip?

      I don’t know the best answer to this. I’ve seen people do it both ways.

    How do you install a drip cap on an existing stucco covered house.. Easy on a vinyl covered house.

  • @flyboypat

    What is done below the door to above the deck for water diversion and finishing this area?

    • @uptokode
      @uptokode  Год назад +1

      Good question. New doors have a flange like a window which is perfect to prevent water ingress. Finishing… either go tight with decking to the underside of the door. OR … if you leave your deck down a bit… then determine what’s best for you. Black flashing works.

    Nice vid... but why doesn't anyone make a video of a ledger installation to a rim joist for a covered porch???

  • @BrettTracyRealtor
    @BrettTracyRealtor 3 года назад

    Do you angle the drip cap on top and bottom to a few degrees off of 45° just in case water doesn't pool because drip cap doesn't create significant run off, just like the bottom of a window sill has a 3 to 5 pitch out for drainage

    Do you leave the building paper un-taped behind the ledger? Or, can you tape the building paper to the rubber flashing horizontally to seal the paper to the flashing?

    • @uptokode
      @uptokode  2 года назад

      You shouldn’t tape building paper on the horizontal plain. You can potentially trap moisture.

    • @powshredder3716
      @powshredder3716 3 года назад +2

      its to let water to drain out if it gets in, you can also add a few galvanized washers behind it to leave a space for drainage.

    I see conflicting instructions on this... most install the top drip cap to go over the ledger board but under the decking boards. This drip cap looks like it will end up on top of the deck surface. I don't even know what to believe any more

    • @uptokode
      @uptokode  3 месяца назад

      If you installed the last deck board overtop, you would need a completely flat drip cap. The point of the bevel edge is to make sure the water does indeed run away from the house. That’s why we do ours this way.
