      Yes nice! I love 2 stroke turboes, got an 8v92 silver, next i want to get a ski-doo MXZ 850 ETEC and throw a Sibler Turbo on it. My 8v92 got a Garret with ceramic bearing thingy in it. I think EMD does too not sure.

      Sound u hear is actually the blower. Turbo doesn't really do anything till notch 7 or 8.

    Ive waited 30 something years to see whats inside one of those! Thankyou. Id love too see inside some of the real old diesel locos i grew up with. Those things would scream on startup smoke everywhere.

      I now work on a tug boat with emd Detroit 2 stroke powered. Imagine a dirt bike based on a 71 with sealed crankcase with reed vskves., billet aluminum 7068 with a 71 liner and rotary ball exhaust valves, it would rev very high but sound insane. A Mai co 700 is close to a 53 Detroit. The 1-71 was s reed valve motor but rare though.

    Maybe it's because I worked with mostly EMD units, but I just love the sound of a two stroke engine at idle or whatever notch. They responded instantly, not like the 4 strokes which feel much slower to get started. GEs are good pullers but nothing beats the sound of an EMD.

      Only place you find them nowadays is dirt bikes, chainsaws and ocean going vessels for some reason I guess that stuff just doesn't benefit from 4 stroke.

      How about a mini EMD v-16 2 stroke turbo in a Polaris assault snowmobile with a silber turbo, better yet an opposed piston 1700 made from 2 850 patriot Polaris engines. Achates power and Fairbanks banks mores need to get in on this. This OP could lay down in the sled with a silber turbo on it.

    The Coast Guard Cutter I was stationed on had these as the main desisel engines. Our engine room had 2 of these and 2 671 Detroit’s. Very loud when all 4 running at same time.

      Did you pull off some oil and blend it with fuel so do it can stay clean as you add more in? I fodbthus all the time with BRp XD-100 on my 8v92 2 stroke turbo, worked great and cooler, quieter with a bit more power. That’s some good 2 stroke oil there.

    These same engines were used to power several Ocean Minesweepers (MSO) built for the US Navy
    during the early 1950s. You would be hard-pressed to find a more reliable diesel engine than an EMD
    two stroke...they quite simply, run forever. There are so many of these wonderful engines still in service,
    and replacement parts are plentiful, they'll be around for many years to come!

      Yes they all run on anti friction bearings are are well designed as a 2 strokes, they will out last a lot of the throw away 4 joke stroke junk made today.

    Even at idle cold the oil flow over the rockers is impressive. Well built,well designed and why they go the distance. Thanks for showing us around that beautiful EMD. The sound is Supreme.

      Yes and the 16-710 is more popular than ever. 2 strokes are the bees knees and Rotax should look into a 750 CID per cylinder V-16 2 stroke.

    That's the cleanest EMD block ive ever seen... I was wondering if it even had oil in it up until you opened the covers. 😂
    I never really rated the exterior aesthetics of the RL (or the AN or EL), but seeing it from inside, that actually looks like a damn nice place to be. I wish the 82's had a cab that spacious and well appointed.

      Count yourselves lucky. The EMD two stroke has but all been regulated out of existence save for tier-4 credit units here in the US but railways aren't buying those (or the new tier-4s either for that matter). Cool to see though.

    How often do they change the oil in a locomotive? Your videos are so relaxing and takes my mind all the the crap going on in the US. Also is is amazing to be able to communicate with someone so far away so easily. Again your country is beautiful and seeing kangaroos running like we see deer running is really neat. Keep up the good work.

      They get regular oil samples so unless there's issues with the oil, it doesn't get changed that often. 😊

      Seeing black diesel lubricating oil always makes me cringe. However, despite my squeamishness, if its black its doing its job and the filters are there to tidy up any particles.

      @@johnedwards1685 There has been cases that black oil has dripped off near the RAVE valves of the Rotax 850 ETEC turbo skidoo. this Rotax 850 has oil lines running everywhere from the big sump jug on the firewall in the sled. my lawnboy duraforce spits some black oil and so doues my Syihs FS240 brushcutter. My 8v92, and all my 2 strokes are running XD-100 BRP straight grade ETEc oil i get at walmart. Its a 2 stroke thing i guess if you run light load to long. i rigged my 8v92 2 stroke with a metering blenting valve that takes some of the oil and blends it with the fuel. Also some shoots past the ports and XD-100 works great and she runs like a charm.

      Pull done off and blend it with the fuel. I worked on a dive boat where we had this rigged up just top off tge 8v72 generators and run them. Total kiss burning at its best. I do this with my 8v82 I can’t wait to try castor 927 maxima bean 2 stroke oil when I get around to it. I ran quicksilver synthetic TCW3 just to see what it would do 4 gallons of it in 6-71 and I wax amazed how well it worked as it’s mono grade . sae 30 but blue dark stuff. Detroits and emd both run very hard chrome moly 4340 crankshaft and anti friction bearings. I seen many generators with Detroits start up cold and up to 1800 rpm real fast. They can do this do to tge anti friction bearings they run on.

    For all the moaning and pissing about the oil looking dirty, all diesels do that within mere hours of an oil change. It goes black from the hydrocarbons associated with the burning of diesel fuel. But, looks aren't everything. It's not the color or looks of oil that determines whether it needs to be changed, that it determined by soot loading, metal in the oil, presence of water or coolant or other contaminants (even fuel). These things go many hundreds of hours on the oil in the sump, unless chemistry analysis says otherwise. Analysis at the molecular level can reveal WAY more than what someone's eyes might suggest.

      They get regular oil samples, the black is usually just carbon which is filtered multiple times before returning to the engine

      EMD and Detroits run on anti friction very hard tool steel bearings. Crankcase shaft and rods are chrome moly 4340 hardened I heard carburized and nitrated!

    It's interesting locomotives use a 2 stroke cycle instead of 4 stroke while still having overhead valves but who cares about that all that matters is it sounds amazing

      The valves are there because 2 stroke emds dont intake air from the crankcase like a 2 stroke weed eater or chainsaw, they have ports on the insides of the cylinder liner for fresh air and valves up top are for exhaust gasses to be released, in a weed eater or gas type two stroke the crankcase is air sealed and when the cylinder comes up, the negative pressure draws air in, then when the piston comes down it forces it into the cylinder chamber, then as it goes back up it fires and pushes the piston back down and the exhaust is blown out through the exhaust port and repeats this cycle
      EMD /Detroit engines utilize a standard wet crankcase for lube oil, this makes it so the fuel doesn't need to be mixed with oil. So when he shows the shot of the valves in action 4 of them are used for engine exhaust, and the one in the center is actually the injector plunger to fire the injector. All EMDs and Detroit engines, regardless if turbocharged or not, utlilize a roots blower, this is because when the piston begins to reach the bottom of the cylinder, the air intake port is exposed by the piston, at this same time the exhaust valves are opened and the blower forces fresh air in and blows the exhaust gasses out the top of the cylinder through the valves,the valves close as the piston begins to move back up, which the piston then blocks the air intake port and initiates compression, then right around top dead center the injector forces fuel in, it ignites, forces the piston down, then right at the bottom the exhaust and intake open up. This happens every single rotation of the engine, thus, regardless of the fact it has valves, it manages to do intake/exhaust on one stroke and compression/ignition on another, completing the Otto cycle in two stokes of piston movement.

    Never heard of an RL class before… similar styling to an AN/EL class and given their south Australian heritage no surprise
    So given they’re emd’s I guess they’re closer to an AN class?

      They're a fully fledged frankenstein, they started life as 442 class ALCo's which had their framed cut into 3rds with a new centre welded in to take an EMD block, then had the ends cut off and new sections constructed and a new body built in the mid to late 90's. They kept the bogies of the 442's and installed GE traction motors and wired it all together. Mid way through rebuild the company building them went bust, they sat and sat and sat until being trucked from NSW to SA and finished there in the mid to late 2000's, RL308 was dropped from a crane and bent and scrapped at that point too. The cabs are MKA designs and are similar to what was put on those EE rebuilds in Tasmania
      When working hard they have the thundering unmuffled EMD exhaust note and the heavy GE traction motor whine together and it sounds really unique

      It’s a 2 stroke. Pull done of that off with a VRO pump into the fuel tank then dump in more and it stays clean, font ask me how I know this.

      @@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Those electric starters must be huge just to start a engine of that size. I would also think that starters for something like that would take a whole lot more amperage than what you would definitely find in a "normal car." And big,big batteries too.

      Yes 2 large electric starters, 800amps 74v with large high capacity batteries for start up.

      Usually shut them down if there's no plans to use them for at least 4 or so hours.. Usually at least an hour before departures.

    Excuse my question, are you sure is a 3,600 HP with only 16 cylinders? The question is because, regularly, a 16 Piston 645 engine develops 3,000 HP. In order to reach the 3,600 HP must be the 645, 20V engine. The 20V, 645 is the same engine as the EMD SD-45.

      Yes the V16 - 645F3B produces 3600hp, it was the highest hp output of the 645 series.

      La SD50 aquí en norteamérica fué la última en usar el motor 645, específicamente el 645 F3, con 16 cilindros, primero llegando a 3500 caballos pero gracias a la competencia con las dash 7 llegó a producir 3600 caballos, sin embargo llevando el motor a 950 rpm con un alternador AR16, realmente se llevó al límite y tuvo problemas similares a las GP35, por lo que muchas de ellas fueron reconstruidas a SD40-2, de nuevo a 900 rpm y alternador AR10, EMD no tuvo opción más que trabajar en un bloque más grande// SD50 was the last one to wear the 645, specifically 645F3 at 950 rpm was pushing its limits, because of that, EMD developed the 710 series.

      No, the emd 20 cyls had issues as well as the 12 cyl 710s - these were ultra reliable. The V16

      We are trained to know what to look for, unless it's flat batteries it's usually a simple fix.

      @@adamfpv8294 On a two stroke diesel, there is very little soot put into the oil. The air inlet ports are between the oil control and compression rings, so the vast majority of soot gets blown back into the cylinder during the intake stroke. The valve stem seals and turbos can let some soot through if they are sufficiently worn. I'd suspect the valve guides on this one are pretty worn.

      How about a methanol Pierre EMD with castor 927 maxima 2 stroke castor beam oil. It goes through tge bottom and goes it’s thing and get pulled off and VRO pumps inject it into the methanol and that would make an awsome stink

      Big engine takes a little while yes, some locos you can pre pressurise the oil system befrie starting.

      Similar yes, the AN had a different engine and a vestibule between the engine room and the cab.

      You need to add fuel or you can flatten the batteries real quickly as the governor builds oil pressure to do it automatically. The new EFI engines will start and run from a push button, some are even full auto start nowdays. They totally self manage like most modern engines..
      These older engines are all mechanical injection, and the larger engines as you can see need manual fuel via the layshaft. Hope that answers your question.

      Well that’s were you pull start it. If you break your pull starter rope then you have to start your EMD 2 stroke with the button up front

      They all leak some oil, the sump holds about 1500L and they are topped up regularly with fresh oil.
