Everybody has an opinion on how to do something. Nothing wrong with the way you did it. Not that I disagree with the extra tips. My Tenere is on 70k mls 115k km on the clock, not a single problem except final drive oil seal had to be replaced. Tenere. For the informed rider. I’m also interested if you rode with Craig, how things went and where did you head to. Craig mentioned he was going on the puppy dog trail in late September when I visited him at the last Yamaha Demo days event at Mom’s in Foxboro. How did your Tenere do?
Craig and I had a great day of riding together. The video is coming soon and we were talking about doing some type of ride together in the spring and inviting our RUclips friends along. Stay tuned for that. The ride up the Trans-Mass was pretty wet as it rained almost all morning. We just kept riding and didn't stop too much. The worst part was Old Route 9, which had water running down it in a few spots. Not a big deal for the Tenere's though. Everyone ran at a good pace and there were no problems. It was nice chatting with Craig and his friends at lunch, lots of talk about Alaska. Great guy! Thanks for the comment Stephen!
Now that is a great idea. Getting that heavy oil to move horizontally into the rear end casing is the hardest part of this job. I've even got a pump type can out in the garage. In other words, well duhhhhh. I've owned two Super Tens and they are great bikes requiring little maintenance but I always end up with clean oil on the floor .@@michaelbdoherty
Thanks for your great videos subbed. Just out of a curiosity would you know what the third bolt (even if it is not a bolt) is ? The one which sits at the top right (2 pm clock) of the shaft drive (just above the fill port)..
Dr. Ding , you might have found out long ago...saw this only now. It is the ventilation cap for the final shaft. You overfill the drive, oil will be coming out there...
I know. I love this shaft drive system. It doesn't feel any different from a chain and I'm going to hate changing chains on my other bike when it's time. The Tenere is so darn easy.
Yes, I always have the bike warmed up before I change the oil. It allows the oil to flow easier (especially for the thick oil in the final drive). Craig and I rode a couple of weeks ago. We had a great time, despite some lousy weather. I have a video to upload, I'm just waiting for Craig to finish his. It will be ready very soon, I promise! Thanks for the comment!
In 40 years of riding, I've never owned a shaft drive. I always warm up the bike before changing the oil or lubing the chain. I 'll be watching for your video with Craig. I just started hitting some dirt roads with my Versey. I haven't owned a dirt bike since 1987. All of a sudden I have the urge to go exploring. I'm in the process of purchasing a 4wd ATV, for that. Is the rear tire always balanced? For example, on chain and sprocket motorcycles, you have to adjust the chain slack and balance the rear wheel using the adjusters. With the shaft drive, none of that is needed? How does it work?
it's very simple, you don't need to worry about side adjusters. There's no slack to adjust at all. It's almost like a car tire with a fixed axle. You just take the wheel off and put it back on. Thank you sir. I have a KLR650 now and I'm just really interested in the Tenere. It is very appealing to me how this motorcycle requires so little maintenance. Especially because it has no chain and sprockets, just turn it on and go.
wow, that's a tough one. I would probably go with the BMW mostly because my friends ride them and they do have the style and are lighter than the Tenere.
Great video. Just a suggestion, always loosen the plug in the fill hole first.
why does that make a difference? I haven't heard that before.
If you remove the drain plug (and drain the fluid), you're in a real pickle if you can't remove the fill hole plug.
Although having a frozen fill hole screw/plug is very rare that is a good & wise point Daddy Buzz.

I bought a cheap new pump style oil can. Fill it with the correct amount and pump in the gear oil. Makes it quick and easy and neat. Great video.

Rule of thumb, always remove the fill plug 1st , than drain plug, because if you drain the fluid & strip out the fill plug , your pretty much screwed.
I hadn't thought of that, nor every had it happen, but it seems like a good practice. Thanks!
wow, that was easy, I usually spend way more time (I think from 30 to 40 minutes) clieaning chain every 1000 kilometers.

I never measure it. I keep adding oil to it until it starts to overfill and dribble out the hole.

S10 adventure The service manual says, “SAE 80 API GL-5 or GL-4, Hypoid gear oil.” I’ll add that to the description. Thanks!
