I wish that we had better recording technology back then, because this is an unbelievably incredible performance. Obviously its the composer conducting, so he knows exactly what it should sound like, but my god, this is the best performance I've ever heard of it. The harmonies and moments that fall flat in other recordings are brought out here. Unbelievable.
A historic performance & the recording of a great composition by the composer himself. Humble tributes to Herr Richard Strauss on the occasion of his 159th birth anniversary today.
Whoosh-What a performance! First time I’ve heard Strauss conduct himself, and the recording was so masterfully produced (and re-mastered?). Took my breath away, thank you so much for sharing!
Ah! The pleasure of hearing Strauss conduct two of thee most Straussian of Strauss passages: The first beginning at 2:24 thru 5:33 and the second at 7:20 until 9:20 is simply Heaven. I could listen to them eternally. I've always imagined that they should be played just like this but no conductor I've heard has managed to succeed in realizing them in this manner. Wow! What a treasure you've shared with us! Thanks.
What an amazing recording. Thank you for posting. In my opinion, the Vienna Phil is one orchestra that can surpass all others when it pulls out the stops and really tries. This was obviously a special occasion for them. Vienna, like most of the world, was suffering appallingly in 1944. This performance generates tremendous energy. I hope it helped counterbalance the negativity to a certain extent.
Strauss made a number of high fidelity recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1944, using the Magnetophon tape recording system. These are amazing performances that were part of the 80th birthday celebrations for the composer. By the way, we now know that he was anti-Nazi and his son actually married a Jewish woman; Strauss had to do everything possible to protect his family from the Nazis.
I’ve read so many things recently about new recordings and how this piece should be interpreted and all of that but I would imagine that if you really wanna know go to the source and listen to the composer conducting it himself. No question about it this is how the piece is supposed to be performed. TY
Great job, Don. Is this from the Vanguard issue? I think that was better than the M&A version, (My source) or the Turnabout on LP. My ex made off with mine, I've been looking for that set for 30 years.
Wow, we now have THE reference recording!

Absolutely right! I agree!

this is a glorious recording to hear the composer conducting
Didn't know this recording existed! What a treasure.
Yes, this one is like finding lost treasure.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant sound for 1944! Superb German engineering!
Deep emotion is reaching my soul , and it is the time of supreme bliss .
From Tokyo in Japan
Wonderful! From the Maestro itself ! Wonderful ! Thank you alot
This is truly a treasure (and also the first recording where i heard all 12 chime hits)!
Magnificent! Great sound for the time.
Fine restoration of this incredible performance. He was still a master on the podium at age 80. Thanks very much.
How good the performance is doesnt surprise me because Strauss was a great conductor but I am surprised by how good the sound is.
It's one of my favorite performances of this piece. Almost 50 years after he wrote it, Strauss clearly remembered how it should be performed.

Thanks for commenting and listening so well!
Try Reiner's 1954 Chicago recording. The tempos are extremely close.

Muchos gracias and bueno suerte en el futuro.

Wonderfully exciting.
Absolute Spitzenklasse ❤️👍
Danke!
Best version on youtube!
la única y legitima versión!!!
27:48 the most breathtaking moment in music
I was just going to listen to the opening...
...35 minutes later
I have an old tape of this. Does anybody know if he ever recorded Salome?
here is Strauss Conducting The Dance Of The Seven Veils from Salome-towards end of video!ruclips.net/video/6xl8pFicQx8/видео.html
as far as i know he did not record his Opera-Salome-just the 7 veils
only the dance of the 7 veils!

My source was a Japanese issue on Clavier label! Thanks for listening and commenting.
There are stronger overtones of "Rosenkavalier" and "Till Eulenspiegel" and more poignancy in Strauss' recording than in many others.
28:57 Countdown
29:12 HNY! 🎉🎇🎆
Zeitlos ! Keine Fahrt. Vom Meister selbst. Beispiellos.
Danke
Don't need an organ. Wow. Incredible. Best Z ever.
