  • I actually filmed this and prepared the script for it several months ago. However, it took forever to get it edited because I wanted to do it on an iPad rather than a real computer. But I’m glad I was able to, because Daxi is a beautiful town.

Chiang Kai-shek is an interesting figure. He is one of the most divisive figures in Chinese history of the 20th century. Not only in Eastern sources but western ones as well. Nowadays, Chaing is blamed for the February incident but in actuality, Chaing didn't order that. He was too preoccupied with the war with the Communists in the mainland. In Taiwan, there is more of a trend to demonize Chaing nowadays. The ''evil dictator'' who suppressed democracy. Regardless of how you feel about him, Chiang's iron will keep Taiwan out of Maoist hand who attempted multiple invasions then. Chiang kept the entire nation mobilized to deter any invasion by the Communists. By turning the entire island into a fortress, Chiang turned taking Taiwan such a hassle that Mao's PLA had to eventually give up.

Very serine snapshot of a place I never intend to visit! But I find the interesting historical background always fascinating. Thanks for making these video (and all the others on your channel). You have a very underrated channel.

Wait did Mao say when Chiang Kai-shek died? What was his reaction? I've always wondered.

It was likely he wasn’t much coherent at the time as he suffered from final stage Parkinson’s or ALS or whatever he had. But he has said of Chiang prior:
“Mao regarded Chiang Kai-shek as his lifelong enemy but gave him credit for a strong sense of nationalism, not subservient to the United States”
      Excerpt From
The Private Life of Chairman Mao

According to one of the videos I watched, Mao said 「知道了」or “I see”

I’m currently reading The Generalissimo, a book about Chiang’s life. On the topic of him being sterile, there is a theory that because he was such a womanizer and frequented brothels a lot when he was young he had contacted numerous STDs which may effected his reproduction. He also wasn’t to fatherly to Ching Kuo as he found him ugly and treated his step son, Wei Kuo, much better. That relationship eventually changed of course. Btw the park is an interesting idea for where to put our lot of Confederate statues.

I’ve read that same book. It’s where I got the tidbit from. Interesting book for sure.

I’m not Korean so I’m probably not all that qualified to talk on the Korean colonization period. I am glad you liked the Taiwan under Japanese rule video. It was a favorite of mine to work on.
