We also think same when it comes to travel unless it is place where you are going for longer duration. With kids packing is also more and when you come back then again kids has to settle.
You can try going to some park within university for some picnic type, take your lunch/snacks and some toys like ball etc for keechu so that you can enjoy for good 2-3 hours and relax.
