I built my girls an 8x12 chicken tractor, put a tarp over it before the snow, & i put hay down for em to walk on then i put motion lights in it so its lit when their in there. So now they have a grassy area to dig in when snows out, & i took the bottom of their main coop & turned it into a dirt bath so their treat tray (snacks & yummys), my daughter got me a heated water pad for under their water container, saves me going out dark in the morning now, & grain bend full. I put radient heaters for heat best money I've spent. So all is easier on me this year, & better for them. Good luck with your new land hunt.
Thank you! You are taking great care of your animals and I’m sure they appreciate it. As for me, I like getting up early with the animals and getting the clean water. It’s quiet that time of the morning. Take care!
Haha that was me yes NJ. I said you brought it back. My friends in Missouri they had the enclosure collapse from ice and snow. Metal pipes twisted. We got about 5 inches. My girls don’t like it either. Stay safe my friend. And warm
We have an enclosed run attached to there coop so they can come out and have plenty of room to roam around. If the snow outside of the run area is deep we shovel pathways around the backyard for them to come out and free range . The ducks all have enclosed runs with roofs and plastic sides like the chickens. They don't mind coming out to free range in the snow but do enjoy staying in the shoveled pathways. We fill large pools for them to swim in and rinse off which they love. We keep rubber bowls in there runs for drinking water and change them out a few times a day as they freeze over. I'm in North Jersey and no snow, just a ton of high winds so most of the hens and ducks are staying put in there runs safe from the winds. In the winter we set up some saw horse tables that the ducks and chickens can hide under for protection when out free ranging. Keeps them out of the snow and rains yet lets them time to come out and stretch.
Our chickens hate the snow too. We got a new Milwaukee leaf blower and I’ve been using it to blow snow around and make the chickens paths all around the yard. It doesn’t work for snow like what you are getting, but when we get the really light fluffy stuff, it works great. It’s so much easier than having to shovel. You all stay warm and dry! Take care and God Bless! ❤
My girls are doing horrible giving eggs . They hate the snow as well they have a enclosure covered but last week we got bad winds and snow and a tiny bit blew in on their ramp they refused to come out until we swept it off lol . Take care good to see you .
Yes, hens seem to be too picky when it comes to snow, lol. Cold is ok. Good luck with your layers. Days are getting longer now, that should help. My ISA browns and Leghorn are good layers.
Good morning, wow you got snow. Here in upstate NY we have about 10 inches on the ground and I woke to 13*. Burr Glad the chicks came out finally. So no eggs from the duck yet ? No decision on Maine yet, hope, your choice of a place is right around the corner for you. 😊

Leaf blowers are fun, lol. I have not tried it for snow removal. Oh I’ve really enjoyed the colder weather. The air is so crisp! God bless!
@ They definitely are fun! 🙂
My chickens never came out in snow. No snow here in midcoast Maine
It's supposed to snow here in Texas today! I really would love to try a few ducks myself! My hen is still laying in the cold. Stay warm!!!
Thank you. Best of luck with the snow! Take care!
@@Backyard_Chickens Its raining now and hopefully it will snow soon. I would rather have snow than ice.

Do you provide light for your hens in the winter? They require 12 to 14 hours of light a day for optimal egg output
