    This was an excellent video !!! I am setting-up to do one of these, for a client, but until now, I was not aware the valves could be bent when the belt breaks when the engine was running while the timing belt broke... So that will substantially raise the price of the repair - of this 17 y.o. car, with well over 87k. Miles... Which, actually saved me a heck of a lot of $ and headaches by informing the client of the extra damage to the engine, by waiting until the belt broke, before replacing it.... The client can now have me look at the other car they want to replace this one with.... 👍

    Thanks for the encouragement. Hubby is going to replace the water pump on my 2001 PT Cruiser, again. The last time was ten years ago when he had to do a head gasket replacement. It overheated on me at a stop light. He ended up replacing the radiator, which solved the overheating problem. He says it looked like Chrysler sized the radiator too close to the minimum coolant needed to do the job. Our old radiator was badly calcified and partly clogged. He says it'll be an all day job for him, being an amateur and hand tools only. He agrees with you about replacing the timing belt. If he decides to replace the idler and tensioner, are there any resources as to modifying the cover at home?
    All he says when I tease him about this is that he wished he had his Dad's old Chevy II with the "runs forever four banger" motor. I remember helping him work on the Ford Falcon van he was driving when we first started going out. That motor was between the front seats. Pull off the big box top and there everything was.

    Finally finished the re-do on my engine, and I found out how to make that huge mounting plate easy to get back in. This is for the turbo version, and it literally took me about 90 seconds to get the plate and the power steering pump into position.
    In prep for this method, have your AC system evacuated. Sorry folks, I've done it that hard way too many times, and it's not worth the hours of frustration with those lines in the way. Also, you should disconnect your lower intercooler pipe from the intercooler, and cap it or put a clean cloth in the pipe. This pipe is after the air filter, and any debris will get stuck in the intercooler or get breathed by the engine.
    The solution for re-installing the mounting plate is to remove the high pressure AC line from both ends and take it out of the car, and disconnect the low pressure side from the top end so it can be swung out of the way. After the AC lines are out of the way, remove the rear bracket for the power steering pump, and unbolt the support bracket for the metal line to the power steering pump (this on the front of the engine, down low towards the middle). Once this is done, you can raise the left side of the engine high to put the mounting plate in position (make sure the pump reservoir does not catch on anything and crack while raising the engine). Once the plate is in position, lower the engine a few inches, position the remaining AC line so it is sticking up near the radiator and out of the way, and the power steering pump will have enough room the maneuver the pulley past the mounting plate tabs. With the plate in it's place and the power steering pump pulley on the correct side of it, you can reassemble everything else. These two extra steps require work, but it makes the most frustrating part of this job easy.
    PS: Note that you will need to re-install the high pressure AC line before bolting the power steering pump back in place, as the line runs under the pump.

    11:45 Some say that you need to use a internal puller to draw down the crank pulley and to refrain from hammering on the pulley as it side-shocks the main bearings and thrust bearings. It is not at all easy to actually find such a M12x1.75 threaded puller or even a bolt with enough threads on it to use in lieu of the puller.

    • @bunnybot7086

      @@bunnybot7086 Yes, I actually did that and it worked great! Got 2 ft of rod for $10 at my local NAPA store. You have to take care not to drive the thread rod in too far or it'll get stuck. If that happens you tighten two nuts against one another at the free end then back it out.

The idiler pully bolt needs to be installed before screwing it into the block. Hey very good video 👍 but I have a question I work on cars everyday all day sort of a backyard mechanic i know alot however what does this pin in the timing tensioner do exactly? and where do it go because i don't know if mine has one or not but I only want to do this once lol also the cams, up means up, correct ?

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  5 лет назад +2

      The new timing belt tensioner should come with a pin installed. Once you have the new belt in place and everything has been checked, the last step is to pull the pin on the tensioner and that's what sets the tension on the Belt. Definitely don't leave the pin in there. It's been a while since I did one of these, but I remember these tensioners are kind of weird since you have to clock them if I remember right. But the instructions should tell you more about that. they come with the timing belt kit

    I don’t have comment, but I do have a couple for this engine. I am doing the same, timing belt and water pump. If the cams pop out of position, do I need to rotate them both again or just enough to align the tuck marks. Also is that crack pulley bolt clock righty tighty or the opposite. I am struggling the get the pulley bolt of and I don’t know if I am tightening it. Or loosening it. Thank you for the great video.

    *This is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine. At 10:30 in the video I said that it was an interference engine.
    In a non-interference engine, overhead valves can hit each other when the timing belt breaks if certain conditions exists (but it happens rarely) but cannot hit the piston tops.
    The interference engine does not have enough clearance between the valves and pistons tops so they will collide when the belt breaks.

    • @rachelblack3816
      @rachelblack3816 6 лет назад

      If it IS an intereference engine and the timing belt breaks, the valves and piston *may* collide --- and they may not. The timing belt broke on my son's 2000 Honda CRV (interference engine) but nothing was damaged, he just replaced the timing belt and it was good to go. However, when the timing belt broke on my '94 (I think) Mitsu Eclipse with an interference engine, it *completely destroyed* the engine; all 4 pistons had holes punched in them, most of the valves were bent (I recall at least one was completely broken, and embedded in he top of one of the pistons), and some chunks of metal were torn from the head, so all that was left intact (guessing here) was the engine block itself. Because the transmission was already acting up, I had it towed off to the junk yard.

    My 05’ belt broke while my dad was driving. Had it towed home, going to try and replace the belt this weekend. When I get ready to put the new belt on do I just line up the arrows and marks as shown here or is there a method to finding Top Dead Center?
    Probably a NOOB question.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  6 лет назад +2

      James frierson yes you do exactly that. But that's a good question because some people get confused with that. Top dead center is top dead center. Of course if the belt was still on, you would want to rotate it to top dead center on the compression stroke before removing the belt. But since the belt is broken and off it doesn't matter. Thanks for watching, and if you can, let me know how you make out with your repair. I have heard of a few instances of these belt breaking and still causing damage even though they are a non interference engine. I guess it depends how high the engine was revving when it breaks.

    • @jamesfrierson9971
      @jamesfrierson9971 6 лет назад

      NoNonsenseKnowHow thanks. So. Just to clarify... if the arrows are facing each other in the center, it’s ALWAYS on top dead center? There’s no need to check which stroke it’s on?
      WILL definitely update you on my repair. Thank you for posting this Vid.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  6 лет назад

      James frierson the fact that you have the cams facing each other and talk Early times have nothing to do with top dead center. You need to make sure that the crankshaft is at top dead center when you take it apart. If you watch the video again I'm pretty sure I showed the marks on the crank is well. The crank is separate from the cams.

    • @jamesfrierson9971
      @jamesfrierson9971 6 лет назад

      NoNonsenseKnowHow right, I remember that. But I am unsure if it lines up at the top of the stroke AND at the bottom too. That’s the best way I can think of to explain my confusion. Does that make any sense?

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  6 лет назад +2

      James frierson piston number one needs to be at top dead center. Not the bottom of the stroke. But if you line the crankshaft mark up then piston number 1 will indeed be at top dead center. I wish there was a better way I can explain it. But I'm drinking beer is right now and I just can't think of any other way. LOL

    Came across this video and really appreciated the straight to the point aspect of it. I had my clutch replaced and now i'm getting a P0344 code. Could the timing been thrown off when clutch was replaced? I'm considering changing the timing belt regardless and this video is the best reference I have found. • @NoNonsenseKnowHow

      Thanks for the sub! No, replacing the clutch would not affect the timing. The clutch is located between the transmission and the engine on the opposite side. Good luck on the repair, and I hope it takes care of your code. Before you remove the belt, verify the timing and see if it's off one tooth or anything like that
