Thank you, all of you, for the GREAT education on women in jazz. I'm doing an art show at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Museum next summer, the theme of which is women & jazz. Thanks for the help with the homework!
My favourites from the video: Ingrid Jensen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Renee Rosnes and Melissa Aldana. Sandy Evans, Joanne Brackeen and Linda Oh should have appeared on the list as well.
Great mixture of past and present talents - they all swing really hard! Claudia Burson is a noteworthy, contemporary pianist from Arkansas. Check her out! She has a swinging Trio.
Great performance by Ingrid Jensen. Vi Redd is fantastic, doubling on voice and alto and also doubling on blues and bebop. Mary Osborne shows us the more swing side of Charlie Christian. I would add Aki Takase and Monette Sudler (one of the few guitarists - male and female - in the New Thing).
Many good suggestions below for a sequel. I would second, in particular, Satoko Fujii, Helen Sung, and Grace Kelly (the last for her sax, rather than her singing).
Reminds me of the small intimate jazz clubs in NY good music great imported beer and friendly waitresses. The cover was steep but that's want you pay for great live enterainment
When you can only pick 10, someone's gotta get left out - Cindy Blackman, Maria Schneider, Ella Fitzgerald, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carol Kaye, Eliane Elias.... maybe a Volume II would be called for...?
As an Australian looking in, it staggers me that Jessica Williams is essentially ignored in her own country. For me she is nearly up there with Jarrett and Mehldau as an interpreter and has the greatest gift any jazz pianist can possess, exquisite touch. I gather she has had health issues in recent years and last I heard she had had to sell her piano to cover medical costs, and if denying one of your great artists her key tool of trade isn't a condemnation of your health system I don't know what is. As for singers, to my ears Kate McGarry is one the best out there, another invisible artist in her US homeland. Have a listen to her on Fred Hersch's "Leaves of Grass" or the John Hollenbeck "Songs I/We like a lot" CDs. A voice of ethereal beauty, soaring power and control.
Ella Fitzgerald. Any list of women in Jazz should include her. An under the radar choice would be Etta Jones.....Please dont confuse her with Etta James.
You forgot many, including Barbara Carroll, Terry Pollard, Jutta Hipp, Sue Terry, Claire Daly, Melba Liston, Hazel Scott, Rhoda Scott, Barbara Dennerlein, Andrea Motis, Magali Datzira, Elia Bastida, and quite a few others.
That list is nigh on endless, but sure, I'll throw some names into the hat: Irene Schweizer (p), Mary Halvorson (g), Kris Davis (p), Lisa Mezzacappa (b), Susie Ibarra (dr), Marilyn Crispell (p), Joelle Leandre (b), Ingrid Laubrock (ts), Mette Rasmussen (as), Ava Mendoza (g), Reut Regev (tr), Myra Melford (p), Susana Santos Silva (t), Angelika Niescier (as), Anna Högberg (as), Jutta Hipp (p), Allison Miller (dr), Satoko Fujii (p), Okkyung Lee (c), Karen Borca (bassoon), and so on ...
Once I saw a TV program of Mary Lou Williams invited by the Daughters of the American Revolucion playing the most gorgeous dirty low down blues she could...Wonderful...Completely surrealistic!
I get the idea this is more about women INSTRUMENTALISTS than vocalists, which is why those of you complaining about Sarah Vaughn, etc.might not feel represented - who would leave out Billie Holiday? On that theme, though, I was particularly impressed with Cyrille Aimee's scat singing. She's quite inventive, not just rehashing a bunch of tried-and-died patterns.
Bernie I can’t thank you enough for posting a powerful video such as this. I say powerful because you’ve included women that have been long gone, forgotten, never given the credit they deserved. If you can play, then you can play. That’s all that should matter! I was slightly disappointed because I know of a woman who plays bari sax with the Mingus big band that’s killin it on the scene. Lauren Sevian. Check her out if you aren’t hip to her already. Maybe you could include her in one of your future videos? :-) Thanks again! ruclips.net/video/mCLgZe1fWsc/видео.html
Linda Oh, Camila Meza, Gretchen Parlato, Tatiana Parra, Hiromi, Hikari Ichihara, Simona Premazzi, Christine Jensen (Ingrid's sister)
Andrea Motis (born May 9, 1995) Voice, trumpet and alto sax
Melba Liston, very highly recorded trombone player from 50's and 60's. Also Helen Sung and Bria Skonberg
I have to add Marian McPartland, the soulful Shirley Scott, Toshiko Akiyoshi. I don't see how they were left off the list.

You're welcome!
I respect Ingrid Jensen .
her's trumpet is killing
Agreed!
Never heard Ingrid before this video and I concur. Oh and she does the lick at 14:47.
To my ear, she is fine but not killing.
@@UkuleleAversion the lick!
@@limitsunlimited8110 your ear is wrong

Alice coltrane
Alice YEAH!
What do you guys think about Emily Remler?
I agree, RIP
What's to think? She was top. Always will be.
Anat Cohen is an AMAZING clarinetist and saxaphonist.
Can’t say I’d heard of any of these people except Spaulding, but I’m glad I know of them now. To them I would add Barbara Dennerlein on the organ.
Yay love this video! Hailey Niswanger, Grace Kelly, Rita Payes, Roxy Coss are also some of my favourites to listen to :)
Great performance by Ingrid Jensen. Vi Redd is fantastic, doubling on voice and alto and also doubling on blues and bebop. Mary Osborne shows us the more swing side of Charlie Christian. I would add Aki Takase and Monette Sudler (one of the few guitarists - male and female - in the New Thing).
...wow. Had no idea Mary Osborne even existed. Thank you so much!!
yeah
It's not cool that i hadn't even heard of Mary Osborne! Thank's for the video!
Thank you for adding Cyrille Aimée to your list!
Renee rosnes 🔥🔥🔥
Many good suggestions below for a sequel. I would second, in particular, Satoko Fujii, Helen Sung, and Grace Kelly (the last for her sax, rather than her singing).
Fantastic list! Also, Ingrid's sister, Christine, is a killing alto sax player and songwriter.
...Alexandra Grimal, Gerry Allen, Rhoda Scott, Airelle Besson, Domi Degalle, Nathalie Loriers, Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock...
Reminds me of the small intimate jazz clubs in NY good music great imported beer and friendly waitresses. The cover was steep but that's want you pay for great live enterainment
Enjoyed this compilation. Also out there: Sue Terry, Jamie Dauber, Sherrie Maricle
When you can only pick 10, someone's gotta get left out - Cindy Blackman, Maria Schneider, Ella Fitzgerald, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carol Kaye, Eliane Elias.... maybe a Volume II would be called for...?
What about Su Terry?
Eliane Elias
Joanne Brackeen, Joanne Grauer, Rachael Z. Saori Yano, Maeve Royce.
Not to be overlooked: Marilyn Crispell, Amina Claudine Myers, Joanne Brackeen, Maria Schneider, Anat Cohen, and Anat Fort.

Who was my favourite? Most of 'em! Great selection (obviously you can never achieve perfection in a "Top 10"...)
You might have included pianist Jessica Williams. Not the best known jazz pianist but undoubtedly one of the most talented.
Shirley Scott
Ella Fitzgerald. Any list of women in Jazz should include her. An under the radar choice would be Etta Jones.....Please dont confuse her with Etta James.

You forgot many, including Barbara Carroll, Terry Pollard, Jutta Hipp, Sue Terry, Claire Daly, Melba Liston, Hazel Scott, Rhoda Scott, Barbara Dennerlein, Andrea Motis, Magali Datzira, Elia Bastida, and quite a few others.

I had no idea that Obama played bass with renee rosnes.
Next, do one on the few and rare African Americans in Jazz.
Hey! Ingrid Jensen's pianist! Stop chewing gum on stage!!! And sorry I think Jane Monheit is a couple notches better than Cyrille Aimee.
A list that doesn't include Patricia Barber isn't a worthy list at all.
