Beck's play is far more dramatic than a aimless heave down the field. He was scrambling for his life, threw it across field, BYU hadn't beaten their rival in 5 years, the kneeling pose and "Harline is still open" banter make it a far more memorable play. I'll give you that the 1980 Holiday Bowl game itself was much more dramatic.
I was at that game, in that corner of the stadium. The air that got sucked outta Rice Eccles Stadium when Harline caught Beck's pass was incredible. The place went silent except for us jubilant Cougar fans! We all went nuts! Still have my ticket stub from that game. Crazy outcome, but I loved it and loved being there to witness it in person!
The player that kicked the extra point for the win is actually a friend of mine (Kurt Gunther). I think that was very cool when I found out. And man, KVN is just a BEAST when he's having a good game! He is my ultimate favorite player for BYU! I hope he has a great NFL career!
I still can't believe the goal line stand (first and goal twice after phantom pass interference) against Oklahoma to hold them to a field goal and set up the winning touchdown drive didn't even make the top 50.
Riley is in there more because of Cody freakin Hoffman!!! Go cougars and Chuck Norris still wearing Kyle Van Noy pajamas!!!! COUGARS 2013 season is going to be awesome!!!!
This was fun to watch. It seems to me that the winning TD catch for the national championship should be ranked higher than #9. Nonetheless, thank you for creating these three videos.
BYU had a lot of blowouts in Lavell's career, especially in the Utah series. Big plays usually come in clutch situations. 57-0 blowouts don't have a lot of those.
Bosco hurt his knee in that game. He had to play most of it from the shotgun. He barely beat Fowler for the starting job in camp, so there was no way he was giving his spot back in the bowl game.
The average BYU fan would unanimously vote for the Miracle Bowl throw by McMahon as the #1 play of all time. There is no debate. Maybe it has become too old and most millenials find it irrelevant.
Responding to a 5 year old post. It made #1 because it was a do or die play against Utah. Beating your rival on their field, no time left. The comeback as a whole was a "greater" moment for BYU. But individual plays, beating Utah in that fashion wins a lot of people over.
Hideo Kojima That's a perceptive comment about Bosco looking injured--he was. He was injured earlier in the game but insisted he be able to play. He was favoring his leg so his throws were impacted by it. We still won
@Gamebox27 hopeless heave? They scored 3 touchdowns in 2 minutes!!! It wasn't about that one play it was about the whole comeback!! That's why it's number one not only because of religion!
Nice - but #1 and #2 should be reversed: the culmination of coming back from down 25-45 with 3:58 to play for BYU's first bowl game win against the team which caused SMU's death penalty (so virtually a professional team) certainly should trump ANY regular season win, even it it is over Utah.
I suspect a strong bias on the part of the ranking panel in favor of plays during games they actually watched, especially if it took place in a game against Utah.
So many flaws to this list I don’t know where to begin. But when the touchdown that wins the only National Championship in BYU’s history is ranked #9 (????), there are some serious flaws in the ranking system. About the only one I agree with is the Hail Mary in the 1980 Holiday Bowl being ranked #2.
2009 Hall to George should be number 1 up 20-9 going into the 4th ended up as a overtime game 20-20 Utah striked first with a field goal as byu ran first play of nothing pass to George caught game 26-23 also was last game of regular season of the 25 year national championship team year 1984
I’m sorry to the family of Johnny Harlem who paid off somebody to get that play ranked as #1 all time. Oh puhleez!!! EVERY true BYU football fan knows that Jim McMahon’s pass to Johnny Harleen at the SMU Holliday Bowl is THE Number 1 play all time!
I agree that the Miracle Bowl play should have been #1 by a long shot...but religion doesn't have anything to do with it. It's obvious that a bozo chose this list, so it's flawed all over. If Riley Nelson got so many highlights here, then you know it's a tainted list.
@Hideo Kojima dude why are you making fun of him? Didn't you know that he broke his ankle because of a late hit by the dirty bean heads? And he still played! No one else does that now a days they go cry to mommy. Makes me sick people don't know the history

I was a senior at BYU when The Answered Prayer happened. I ran the streets in Provo celebrating.
Definitely agree with number one. Greatest heads up play ever.
I had a feeling the # 1 play of the top 50 would be Beck to Harline. That play still gives me chills. Go Cougs.

3:24 He No-looked that!

Did anyone else call the last two plays of this list? Kept waiting and waiting for both of them
Actually, watching these videos mostly reminds me how painful it is that we've lost to Utah three years running now.
Bruce Webster Unfortunately this comment hasn’t aged well :/
Its 2019.The only thing making being a BYU fan any easier is thinking about how fans of Purdue feel every year.
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Riley is in there more because of Cody freakin Hoffman!!! Go cougars and Chuck Norris still wearing Kyle Van Noy pajamas!!!! COUGARS 2013 season is going to be awesome!!!!
Here in 2020
A lot of plays can be tacked on to this in the past 9 years. The hail mary vs. Nebraska comes to mind.

We’ve got a few more plays to add to this list now
The McMahon to Brown throw should have been number one by a mile. Maybe the most amazing comebacks of all time. But still a great list.
I think the Brandon Doman pitch to Luke Staley should be higher ranked. The stadium was absolutely bonkers after that play.
This entire list needs to be redone. When Riley Nelson has more plays than McMahon and Detmer combined, the list is flawed.
You are a byu fan ? Am a fan of byu
nice

I feel like the list was determined a lot due to what clips they had rights to show. Way too many 2005-present highlights!
number 1 is absolusey the greatest byu football play in history so far my opinion
All the time in the world for beck, can anybody get open for him? He rolls right! Lets it go! FINDS HIS GUY! JONNY HARLINE!
Somewhere out there, wherever he is, Harline is still open.....
you'r dang right bruce webster!
The point isn't religion, the point is the rivalry.

Stop letting Bronco choose the top 50 plays...Too many Riley Nelson plays! And not one Jake Heaps play?

How far did you have to go back to get this many top plays? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Got number 1 and number 2 backwards

Seriously? You think religion is an issue?
Why on earth would you want a Jake Heaps play?!?!
