  • Anton Chekhov's "The Black Monk" is a short story that delves into themes of madness and genius. It follows the protagonist, Kovrin, a gifted man who starts seeing a hallucinatory figure, the Black Monk, who convinces Kovrin of his own extraordinary destiny. This vision, which Kovrin believes is a manifestation of his genius, brings him a sense of euphoria and grandeur, but it also alienates him from those around him. As Kovrin's mental state deteriorates, the story explores the fine line between genius and insanity, and the impact of mental illness on personal relationships. A fascinating tale.

The computer generated voice is so wonderfully crafted that it fools most casual listeners, I believe. There is one problem in all the recording though: when the voice should be gentle and mellow, willingly or inadvertently the poster made it sound harsh and angry, which is so unpleasant. As far as the the story: the tourments created by the 18th century "humanism" troubled Chekhov's spirit and that of other unfortunate prominent writers of the second half of the 19th century.

Fairyland does tend to have some things that seem like parodies of the material world.
Projection may feed on itself to the point where those not trained on it can experience the same mental form without any of the beliefs associated with it.
Playing tricks on people and words from others can have unpredictable effects.
Sometimes, people are given dreams for them to let go of associations that drag them down in outer life.

Whatever its intention, this is a critique of atheism. Kovrin is uplifted and inspired by a supernatural presence. He is handsome, charismatic and of superior intelligence until those around him drug him into insensibility of the presence of his supernatural familiar. His wife and father-in-law cannot accept this irrational, albeit benign, aspect of his way of being and drug and analyse him. Without the apparition Korvin grows fat and torpid and ultimately his health collapses and he dies.
