The Trouble with Music Guitar Stores, Gear Prices and Supply

  • The music retailers and guitar equipment stores and other technology sectors are in trouble. Find out why gear is rocketing in price and will music shops selling equipment even be able to stay in business?
    Taking a look at the whole business sector (all technology business is suffering) including guitar shop retailers and music gear private sellers shows that the struggle to stay in business as a dealer (maybe through a recession with little or no products for sale) could be the start of the demise of business as we know it today.
    Since 1981 I have had extensive business experience with technology products in the buying, selling and even part owning a manufacturing base in the Far East, so it's highly likely that I have some idea about the current problems and why its not just simply a 'supply chain problem' that will just fade away.
    In this video I speak about what I think are the major root causes of these business problems, and I even discuss why used guitar gear is currently rising in price faster than ever seen before in the music gear retail sector and for private guitar gear sellers. There are so many music stores that once turned their back on used gear like guitars, amps, effects, accessories, but today that very same used equipment actually is keeping some sellers and people in business... yes it really is like that right now.
    Over the years I have seen many business challenges of course, but none quite like the one starting to rear its ugly head, and one that when combined with other world wide problems could take down much of the music store and retailing sector of musical equipment or anywhere technology is concerned... or will it?
    I have spent considerable time creating this video and the contents are entirely my own work and is a completely truthful independent opinion based generally on my experience in business - so check it out.

    The one Andertons sent you was probably the same one used in the demo video that they put out LOL! I think this is a wide range problem with music gear in general. If they have a guitar on the wall and people have played the crap out of it they still consider that guitar as new since it has never been sold. Some places will list this as a floor model but some do not...

      Well the legislation says that the goods must be brand new and as described if you buy a brand new product. They at best make some excuse up why I ended up with used gear - very similar to your general comments. This was not really the main subject of the video (but it remains an important point) and thanks for the post... appreciated - and for watching too!

      @@tonymckenzieofficial I am in the US and I purchased a amp as "NEW" in the description but when I received said amp you could tell that it was a demo or a floor model as they did not even bother to wipe all the dust off it and it was missing the footswitch and user manual . How many hours were placed on the valves? ( This was Guitar Center) Sent it back and never purchased anything from them ever again. I know this was not the point of the video as I was only referring to the UA pedal that you purchased from Andertons as "NEW" and as far as I am concerned as soon as they took it out of the box and used it ,it is now a used product and should be listed as such!

    A similar thing happened to me a few years back. I bought some Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Tap Tele pickups from The Music Zoo. If you're not familiar with the tap tele pickups they're one of Seymour Duncan's most expensive Telecaster pickup options. Fantastic pickups. At any rate I received the box, opened it up and it's very clear that they've been used. I was blown away. You mean to tell me I paid full price for brand new custom shop pickups and you sent me something that's actually been inside of guitar already??? I thought, these people are out of their minds. Needless to say I called them right away and the guy in the phone wasn't very friendly I will tell you that. Not trying to drag them through the mud but the Music Zoo deserves a bad review for this. At any rate I finally got them to take the thing back and get it off my hands and give me a full refund. They were completely unapologetic about the whole thing but at the end of the day I learned these things happen. Found the pickup set somewhere else.

      You know what Joe - you did the best thing ANY customer can do, get a refund and shop elsewhere. This video really relates to multiple things and the pedal incident is just one, but a lot of guys - customers to those stores comment very much how both I and you commented. I too think that it's not really right to receive used equipment for a new price - and frankly I wont buy ex demo gear from any of them at any price - I have seen to much rubbish going on. Also, how a customer is treated is core to ANY type of business, we all buy from the sales guy (particularly if we're standing in the store) and a friendly and supportive customer services guy can do wonders to 'turn around' the problems and errors that happen. Thanks for posting this as it shows the sort of thing that can and certainly does happen far more than some would like to admit. And hey thanks for watching.

    Great video Tony. Prices of new gear have rocketed over recent years. Fender change the name of their guitar ranges every couple of years and hike the prices up way more than inflation and a second hand Les Paul will often cost you as much as or more than a new one so I've stopped looking. Fortunately, one of my favourite guitar sounds is Hendrix with a fuzzface and its huge tonal variation from very raw to really bell-like just using 30% of your volume knob's sweep. I've got a good strat so I started making fuzzfaces and simple tonebenders after previously no knowledge at all of electronics. It's a simple circuit but the learning is the best part. As for recession the problem for most of us is that gear prices might go down but we won't have any money:-)

    • @robinjgill

      I've also noticed a surge of what looks to be decent quality second hand gear on dealer websites, so people are feeling the pinch.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  2 года назад +3

      Oh the prices are silly, but I do think it's driven a lot by the chip things going on... not necessarily 'just' the chip itself, but from the hype all that is getting (look at the car prices for used ones!) scary pricing indeed. The thought of recession and the ultra inflation (gas is $9.5 a gallon here in the UK - yes really!) should slow all of that. The gear does sell slow I also agree with you and that uncertainty has got to be a factor there. Maybe many are selling because of reduced number of venues (certainly the case in the UK) and they had enough? On the dealer website for used gear that is because like the cars the gear remains in short supply. I spoke with a company recently that had to stop making substantial numbers of products because of supply chain problems, and if they are having the problem, then the dealers certainly are. I noticed a big sway towards used gear on many sites - you are dead right on it Robin. Thanks...

    Yes : ) One thing: China missed the first industrial revolution - and I think they never ever want to make this huge mistake again. And now Europe is missing the "Digital Revolution": we don't produce our own chips, computers. We don't even make our own photovoltaic solar systems. We are far way behind in storage batterie research... 100 years ago Albert Einstein predicted "black holes" and recently they made a real photo of one of it. Basic research takes a long time. In the future the Asiens will make the photos if we don't wake up and cut back the "Neoliberal REvolution" for the benefit or only a few superrich... IMHO

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  2 года назад

      Well allowing the west to 'fall behind' is a mistake that the west will reap - and even as I write there are many issues. I noticed Fulltone stopped making gear and I could guess that the supply chain was a problem. That is affecting all types of businesses. I have a friend that operated a small guitar shop for years and just recently he decided to stop too. Here in the UK I don't see Mesa Boogie and while many 'might' blame the Gibson purchase, I don't believe that is the problem, more like supply chain and even labour problems and of course much more. I just reviewed a Yamaha THR30 II wireless device and scarily the wireless addon is not available for months. IMO that is a supply chain issue... if Apple have the problem, Tesla have the problem then make no mistake so does everyone else. I am so surprised that its not talked about much and politicians... well they seem pretty nebulous to most of it. Great post... and thanks for watching.

    I totally agree with your sentiment Tony however what about asking ourselves "do we really need more gear or are we suckers for the social media marketing hype"? I know this is a addiction I'm trying hard to control because in reality I don't need anything else, I have found the best tone for me, doesn't stop the mind control of consumerism from getting the better of me on a regular basis. Especially now everything is designed with a shelf life of 5 years max and no repairs just disposable junk filling tip's probably in a third world country which then leads to the mega rich at Davos penalizing us financially for the damage they do in their private jets flying round the world warning us about climate change, now let's have another look online at that combo I fancy.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад +1

      Ha exactly. I certainly don't need any and I STILL have yet to review it all. For me, it has become a sort of weird 'pass time' and the problem is like you said it can be hard to control. No doubt. I could not even guess at how much money's worth of gear I actually have, but if I got knocked over by a bus tomorrow I know that my relatives would have a time figuring it all out :). It got so bad that every guitar (for example) has a 'worth' figure in the case as a guestimate because they could never guess the true values. Its crazy! But of course the gear retailers don't care they just keep selling it. I have said I'll stop doing this stuff on a number of occasions and refocus back to the music, YT can be a bore sometimes and motivation is not always there especially for some stuff. The Davos buys... ha, I listened to one the other night (on YT) and what a complete ass he was... the head the tail, the whole darned thing.... you're right to comment about those. In any case, great post and spot on. Thanks for watching too.

    Fully agree with you Tony.
    Its making me feel older! Ha ha.All technology items in general whether that be microwave ovens, washing machines, watches, laptops, tablets, routers, guitar pedals, mixers and so on. I remember along time ago we used go to a store that was only a short distance away and they had rows of products by different manufactures. We could see in real life with our own eyes in broad daylight and touch the item, feel how wobbly the buttons were or how flimsy or solid it was, we had better understanding of the dimentions, could have a close look at it all the way around from different angles, see the exact colour and shade of it, feel the weight of it and as far as guitar pedals, we could try them out without any obligation and compare them side by side. Then we could buy it there and then and take it home with us. Imagine that!
    Now there's no store in town, we have to have a device and internet connection to get online, have an email address, sometimes we might need a printer and ink and paper, oh and they have to be working too, not dried up, out of paper? Well we will have to order some more, then you have to search online, note the specs, check the reveiws, watch demos on RUclips, note the measurements and get the tape measure as a reference, check the seller/supplier, check the stock level, check the price and delivery price and dates then compare other suppliers browse again and we may come across a different product and check those specs, check their prices, check the reviews, check that supplier and product and delivery, more demos and reviews on RUclips because online we ever never going to be sure in the same way that were when visiting a store.
    Suppliers websites are just an extension of the wharehouse ordering and they can function without the actual product being in stock and in turn if we want it, we may have to wait for it or consider buying second hand which pushes the second hand value up.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  2 года назад +1

      Well ultimately if the supply side of things remains trouble, then the recession appears then there still is hope, but if it just continues to remain poor then prices will contiue upwards for used gear (and likely new gear too). No resolve will make it very difficult for most stores whatever they sell dependent on the origin and the technologies inside. Thanks for watching.

That said, I'm assuming that they're also moving as much of their manufacturing machines out as well. So what will the Chinese eventually get? Sounds like a lot of empty factory space.

    Ohh Tony, i told you a while ago that Andertons pull these tricks, they did the same with me, with a used damaged guitar
    that they listed as more than 10 new warehouse stock, they are not to be trusted.
    I have worked in electronics since i left school and have seen all the ups and downs that all businesses go through.
    As for the chip shortages, the car makers have only themselves to blame, for years they have stuffed more electronics
    into them, now there is a shortage, they can't make them!
    Answer, make a basic car that is reliable and doesn't come full of electronics that will at some point fail.
    Re the music industry, it will survive, but some dealers deserve to go.
    Anyone buying new or used gear at todays prices either has more money than sense or just hasn't the patience to wait
    until the prices drop, there must be a lot of people that will be desperate very soon for cash to buy the basics of life.
    Prices for everything are only going in one direction, and demanding more wages will only make it worse.
    For now i am buying nothing i don't need, i am lucky to have all the gear that i need to see my days out.
    I hope you business can weather the storm, whatever direction things go in.

      Yes thanks Allan for the post, because it is a customers opinion and from what I see too few customers ever voice their opinions about less than perfect service. When I make video reviews honestly, near enough always with few exceptions I really prefer to buy gear from the retail experience whether in the shop (most closed around here) or on the net if not. The reason is, that the buying experience is exactly what others will or could receive, and as you say, it can be very frustrating and annoying. So much so that they lose the customer. But when I experience aggravation along the buying, quality, returns etc. road I ALWAYS put it in the video. I have been ridiculed and all sorts of things for doing that really, but the decent guys out there probably do take note. If ever I agree to review a product sent to me as 'free' for reviewing it (very rare as I generally try not to do many of those) I always agree with the vendor that if I think the item is bad then I say that and score it accordingly. You can't have situations that are actually misleading IMO. I agree with your comments re prices and wages... all going on 'strike' in the UK. Sadly (not) I don't believe in holding the country to ransom for some pay rise. The best way is to have great products at good prices backed up by GREAT customer services and then you'll soon get pay rises IMO. All I hear is the 'strike' thing and it will pull down the economy even further. In what I do, they are OK and since 1989 when I founded it that company has never lost money - not even through the pandemic etc. and that says a lot about the management team at that time, because all the regular staff were at home for months. The management worked every day so that actually paid off. I always believed what you put in you generally get out. Thanks.

    Thanks for this Tony this was brilliant and really informative. The price of music equipment currently is horrendous. Although you rightly mention shortages of supply for some items there is still one hell of a choice out there and the range stocked by the online retailers is mind boggling. I don’t know how Lee Anderton sleeps nights! The stockholding costs must be horrendous. I recently bought a Sire S7 from them. The first one that arrived was supposed to have had a 10 point check but the strings were running diagonally down the fretboard…Of course I could have fiddled with the neck myself but on a new guitar I didn’t want to do this. I contacted them straight away and they immediately despatched a replacement which is perfect and one of the nicest guitars to play I’ve ever had…and I’ve had loads…and they arranged collection of the first one. I’ve bought a few things from them over the years and their service has generally been reliable. If something has gone wrong they’ve dealt with it quickly. I’ve never bought a guitar online before but this was so cheap I felt it was worth a punt. A question I would like to ask you is…Who is buying all these really expensive guitars? There can’t be that many guitar playing dentists out there….

    • @tonymckenzieofficial

      I have bought from Andertons too, but often its all list prices and little or no discount when I want a particular product... seems many manufacturers have a say in the procing, but noone of course will ever confirm that. Suffice to say that many companies over recent times have been fined by the CMA for price fixing in a number of ways and companies that most have heard of like Fender and Casio to name even just two. Remember that it costs me dearly to make any review as I tend to buy the gear! No help from anyone unless I make a sponsored review - companies like Cherub (NUX) and VegaTrem both helped me, but I always create still real reviews. So to me the cost really is important. Who is buying the new and very higher priced guitars? You know what, I really don't know... but I know one guy that is not! Heres a cloe... me! With venues not even being there in many cases and my friends telling me that gigs are slower these days it's probably not the 'every day' musician. I get emails from soundaffects.co.uk with guitars on all the time and most recent included custom shop 'used' guitars for about £3K. Are they even worth that for a Fender tele or Strat? I don't really think so. My recent Warmoth example cost me about £2K and its exactly what I wanted, whereas the CS as shown at soundaffects.co.uk honestly don't come near. A few of my current thoughts.... thanks for the post and for watching - appreciated.

I’ve had several Strats but never been completely satisfied with them. The best one developed a problem with the bridge pickup and the guy repairing it for the retailer conned me out of it! I was a bit green then but playing a lot. The Sire S7 I bought is really good, probably better than some of the Strats. That's what I love about your channel; you tell it how it is.
    Here in Canada, and I'm sure other places, its common to sell the floor model stuff as new. It really upsets me to pay for a new item, and you get one that was clearly used. I get that it's near impossible to avoid this with a high end/limited guitar, but at least don't leave them out for any kid to pick up and start beating on it. Usually they box up the floor model when they sell one, price it as new, and then open up a fresh one and put it on the floor, to avoid any from getting too much wear. When they get damaged, you get the "demo" pricing, which is usually 5-10% off but it's sold as is, so is it really a savings at that point?
    The Audi Gt rs etron is a beautiful car. I've got the RS5 right now, and it's getting a bit old but I love it as it was the last year for the manual transmissions. The GT rs etron one of the few I could live with. Expensive as hell though.

      Andertons pulled the same trick with me, sending out damaged ex-demo stock as new.
      It went straight back, then it took weeks to receive a refund.
      Once a dealer does that i never go back, i often wondered what happens to the gear they use on Andertons TV,
      now we know.

      @@Barbarapape lol. Sounds like they do the same thing. When someone buys a new one, they pack up the floor model and ship it off, then open a new one and put it on display.

      I try very hard to show what I can. I'm not perfect and as I get older it gets harder, but I appreciate the comments for sure. The 'used' gear as new does not wash for me... I hate that sort of thing and really they are misleading people when its sold as new. Nobody cares :( On the cars I had a Taycan, but it had really many little issues (1st year) and IMO the etron GT RS fixed most of it (same chassis). So I bought it, but man they screw you on the price and PX stuff... so the story is completely true about their 22 cars new. It is a very interesting aspect that all sectors suffer with this and (from what I see) all sectors are now 'grabbing' used product and upping the price of used (and new gear) accordingly. Thanks.

      @@tonymckenzieofficial This is not the time for anyone looking for a bargain or big discount. Re selling used gear as new is illegal, and is covered by the consumer rights act 2015, the sellers know this, but will keep trying it on until some fool keeps it, we wont!🤔

    Thanks Tony,for again a great video on gear and subject that matter in this way.
    Maybe the situation to secondhand gear is different,than it is in Europe. Prices on secondhand gear are realy go up.I see more and more gear offered,for much higher prices,than to my opinion are worth.An E series Japanese Fender Stratocaster from the mid-late eighties, offered between €1000-1500,that's crazy prices. But are these sold for those prices?I don't think so.On the other hand,i see a lot of offers,for very low prices,like 2 Vox AC 120 combamps,together for €550(one needs service).But i see ,such offers,taking a much longer time,to be sold.
    Buying secondhand is for me the way to go,it askes more time,awareness,sensitivity and attention(and that isn't the mindset of a lot of people),though you find great and rare gear,for very good prices, lots of times meet great people and this way,money circulates between "people",not companies.
    Tomorrow a Terada ES 335 model guitar,will be delivered,bought it last week in Germany from a very friendly man.The guitar is in a pretty good original condition( some damages in the lacquer on the sides,but can be repaired),comes with a good fitting case,for less than €750.All the Orville by Gibson, Japanese Epiphone Elitist models were build by Terada and look for prices on Ebay/Reverb,skyhigh.The Terada ES 335 models are ultra rare,they're made much better than the Epiphones(has a carved top and back bodysides,out of massive maple,ebony fretboard,with white/black/white lined bindings,special abalone inlays),plays and sounds like a dream.I own already one,in Orange Burst,the other one is in Dark Red Burst.So Tony,when you like ES 335,search in England for one,it will amaze you,when you can try one

      On pricing - I just came back from a localized guitar show and the prices of used gear here remain also high. I can agree I did not see hundreds walking out with purchases though. Seems much like car (auto) garages hiking pricing on used stuff (even ex demo) and ripping people off (just a view). I agree used gear is a real bargain if you can find non abused gear and that matters greatly for that sort of gear. Lack of sales for new gear will result no doubt in tears later when XXX maker or XXX dealer is no longer around. Thanks for the info on that guitar - I honestly did not know that one (really because I am not really an 335 player - who knows why not?) but very interesting to hear about and thanks for the links so others can see the guitar... and of course thanks for watching.

    Your content brought back semiconductor memory. 1986 Texas Instruments, I used a microscope and a microscopic soldering iron controled thru 30 to 1 control mechanism to connect the inside leads to the legs before the the final incasement. Arizona will be a bad place to make a microchip mfg. plant. Texas would be the best place in USA as it has a proven track history.

      :) I was harassing Jujutsu in Japan :). Yes I know Texas well and have worked with guys in Texas since 2000 or so. I think the Arizona plant (if the stuff happens along the lines I mentioned) would be a godsend because having over 70% of fabrications etc. held by someone that just comes along and takes it wound be in my opinion a very dangerous situation regarding ANY supply of those products. Thanks Mike and good to know that I'm not alone with the memory chip memories of 86 :) and thanks for watching.

      Indeed a very good question and one that I honestly don't know the answer to. But think of the history that I mentioned in the video carefully, because that history goes way back for some time. However, I think there could be a particular 'angle' that I have considered many times over the years but the 'reset' was not one of them. ;-) Thanks...

      The costs on SMT would still be higher than Far east I'm sure, but by how much I honestly can't say. But think this, if those chips stop because of some sort of land grab (I did mention it) then being dependent on somewhere that ceases to supply (at the very least) would probably result in ceasing trading... very scary.

    Another very interesting video - thanks! I spent about 3 months in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea in 2000. China was many years behind the other three technologically at the time. So many shortsighted western companies lost their tech edge by allowing China to make their products at lower cost, that we emerge as well clothed as the Emporer. Pride in products well conceived and built is trailing behind the horse and carriage these days.

      Similarly so for me, but over many years from about 85 on. China today is not the lion re chip fabrications, but they know the position very well and I do think it's one reason that Taiwan needs to have 'options' so to speak. Hong Kong was a great place when I used to visit there but of course very sad what transpired and also very bad in the way that some make agreements and then later renegue on them. Thanks for watching....
