Excellent thank you. I've just started sewing and I'm learning everything from youtube. This video was precise, to the point and educational. Thanks for taking the time to teach in here.
this was super helpful for the general technique but I think it may have useful to say that for beginners espevially, to use pins to and ensure the dart is straight. although im sure even the most skilled sewers may still pin it for precision.
thanks for the video. I would just like to clear things out. Have you ended sewing the dart just within the end point of the dart and you reversed it but not through the dart line going through a straight line (which is the folded one or the line at the middle) instead. Am I right? Thanks.
Ladies - that stitch is not straight. I would unpick it and start again - and I make boat covers! On a dress, with what looks like expensive fabric, that's just plain not good enough.
TERRI CLANCY I finally broke down and bought a new Brother machine...the one my mother won in a radio contest 40 years ago was perfectly fine, I just wanted a new one :)...I was shocked by the lack of control I have with the presser foot, and how much pressure it takes compared to my old machine. I wish I could remember where I saw it, but someone told me it takes much more energy for the machine to start than to sew. So, by the time it builds up the power to start, the motor is running much faster than it needs to be to sew, which is why there's so little control. I haven't tried it yet, but was told to turn the wheel a bit when I first press on the peddle. That should keep it from needing up so much energy to get it going. I'm not sure what type of machine you have. For my Brother, the wheel has to be turned counter-clockwise {towards me}. I'm not feeling super articulate at the moment. If I haven't explained it well, please feel free to contact me via reply. Hope that helps!
TERRI CLANCY You're very welcome! Honestly, I'm surprised you understood anything I said. I had just come home from the emergency room, and was dizzy and disoriented for several days. Apparently, it's possible to become dehydrated by drinking too much water. Who'd have thunk it! Glad you were able to decipher my babbling. Have a lovely Memorial Day!
This video is highly misleading, and inadequate in defining/ demonstrating proper construction of a dart. Sewing a triangle off the edge of a square piece of fabric is in no way comparable to measuring, pinning, and stitching a dart into a shirt or other garment. For anyone learning to make their own alterations, there is absolutely no practical information here.
Not a very good tutorial. You're supposed to pin, baste and THEN sew your darts. Especially if you are a beginner. Just eyeballing and "pinching" your fabric eliminates the technique for precision.
I can't believe you would send out such a poor video to beginners. I sure as heck wouldn't take lessons from either of you because I feel insulted to think you would betray your viewers. Not very professional.

super helpful; i have just sewn my very first dart after viewing your very clear video instructions. Thank you!
Thank you! This was super helpful!
Thank you - we didn't know how to do this, now we do!
THANK YOU!! I am so glad I found such a clear demonstration! =)
So you're just supposed to leave that lumpy bit of fabric on the inside, or do you cut off the 'triangle' inside once you're done sewing the dart?
strange lynx no, you're supposed to cut it off about 1-2cm above your stitch line then flatten the excess fabric to the sides and iron it
Such a good demo!
thanks for posting this is a really good demo
thank you, i just started sewing and it's good to know this....so it's okay to totally sew off the fabric then?
Sew helpful! Thanks :)
reaaally helpful!

Thank you and you have very apt surnames😂
I only just learned what darts are from my textiles teacher so when I saw this video I was like "Oh I know what that means now hurhur :D"
...Lol.
Don't backstitch....you're supposed to just decrease the length of the stitch
At the end, not the beginning of the stitching.
Hi...you know I wondered about that....it seems that I tend to loose control with my cheapie presser foot.🐈

woohoo! Thanks.
Hi Hilary, you're very welcome! :)
WONDERFUL. Clear & concise and to the point with the steps....Thank you. I understand the process of adding a dart now! {{BearHUGZ}}
Nothing was explained on how you came up with dart placement. The darts was already there.

I'm thinking they was practicing a video shoot to see how clear it was, and yes it was very misleading
you arent supposed to backstitch on a dart....
