I love the humor in this film and Bibi Andersson is one of the greatest actresses ever. I love how stark the happiness and sadness are with one another. Thank you for your review, and have an amazing weekend.
I see where Andy D is coming from when it comes to the fact that characters don't feel real, but I do feel that they are meant to represent ideas rather than people. When the squire saves the maid and then tells her that she owes him, I see that as a selfish person taking advantage of the fact that everyone is dying. He even admits that he is selfish and he doesn't care. I think what this movie does best is examine ideas rather than characters. I think that as long as the director remains consistent and his intent remains clear, a film can do whatever it pleases with the characters it portrays. I think the fact that these all of the characters represent a unique idea involving faith/doubt is brilliant.
It's a great film but the opening shot of the hovering bird is absolutely jarring. I don't know if it's a fake bird suspended on a wire, but it looks enough like one to jolt me right out of the movie, before it started. It's a hurdle.

every The Seventh Seal review is welcome.
5:51 I'm so glad that you brought that up. That is one of the best shots in the entire film.
