When Luke says, "Stevie... it wasn't," you can just SEE the hurt and disbelief in his eyes... And also the muderous rage. You can see him deciding, in that moment, that the time has come and that he's going to burn that f-ing house to the ground.
As somebody who had a very close friend go through heroin addiction, Luke's speech at the end and just his general adult storyline hits so hard. You really don't get how shitty it is for everyone involved in something like that unless you've lived it. The stealing, the lying, the "one more chances..." The guilt. I've since drifted apart from her, but I got married last year and still asked her to be involved in the wedding since the rest of our friend group was all in it and I still love her. She accepted and seemed honored, but a couple of days before, she texted saying that she might not be able to make it. It was disappointing, but I get it. I think she was really scared of having to see so many people that she had burned over the years, especially since many acquaintances and even my parents who knew her story, would be there. She probably felt like everyone would be silently judging her despite her having gotten her life together, and I can't imagine how much anxiety that must've given her. I don't think I'll ever really be able to rekindle that friendship fully, and that makes me sad. But, in the end, she's doing better now and that's so much better than how a lot of these stories end.
Lukes story always breaks me, i really see myself in him, apart from the ghosts, my addiction started after my mother passed and lasted 30 years, my family disowned me because they couldn't find me the day she passed and my father never forgave me for not being there to say goodbye her, 2 weeks ago the friend i had in my last rehab replapsed and i was to far away to help her, 2 days ago was my birthday and i bumped into one of my cousins who told me my father passed a year ago, my family decided i wasn't worth telling, so i've had a rough few days, but yesterday i hit my first full year of being clean and on monday i start a training course as a substance abuse peer mentor, hopefully i can stay strong and help other people fight their battles, something good has to come from all this right? sorry for the long comment, thanks for the brilliant reactons ladies
I’m saddened by your story but congratulations on one year! I hope you’ll find a day were you are surrounded with a lot of people that care about you. Keep up the good work, I’m rooting for you. Your future will be bright no matter how long it takes for you to get there. 🤍
I just want to say that I am so sorry for what you've been through. I thank you for sharing your story and want to say congratulations on your sobriety! I'm so proud of you ❤
This might not mean much as we don't know each other. I am incredibly proud of you for the life you're currently living. I'm sure it was incredibly difficult and will continue to be but you strike me as somebody who has plenty of strength and endurance. You have to have that to survive through 30 years of addiction. I hope you know that you are worth it.
I have seen this 50 times and I was crying along with you. This show just gets me every time. Pay attention to that “go”…it’s really important and something a lot of people miss.
One of the show's challenges is to notice what are really ghostly apparitions and what are just apparitions of conscience. For not every apparition that looks like a ghost is one. Some phenomena are simply a coping mechanism. Ways to cope with trauma and grief.
Mike Flanagan has personal experience with with substance abusive and recovery, and it’s reflected in his writing. His addict characters (Luke’s not the only one he’s written) are portrayed with great sympathy but also honesty. Flanagan’s also great at writing vulnerable monologues for his characters, and AA-style group confessionals is one of the few places where people actually do bare their soul like that in real life. So, cynically speaking, it makes for an excellent setting and a great screenwriting device. Heaps of atmosphere in such a setting, lots of implied hope and despair, and a stage for a character to earnestly monologue without it feeling like melodrama.
Steve is lots of people's least favourite character, but as the eldest sibling I feel like I relate to him the most. I know what it's like to be the eldest, thought of as the "strongest" and to try and keep siblings protected even from themselves. To feel let down by a parent and how that makes you appear colder than your siblings. I don't know I can't explain it, but I feel bad for Steve's character, even when he makes poor decisions. I can see the place they come from, and misguided as they might be they come from love and sadness
I agree Steven and Shirley are the most harshly judged but had the most thankless position as the oldest children, Shirley shelled out all that money that she didn’t have to get Luke into that rehab center and they show glimpses in the early days how supportive Steve was, it can get exhausting being the one trying to hold everything together so after a while you can start to come off as cold
@@jordanmorris4797 I think Shirley is the most disliked mostly because of her attitude. I understand that putting all that weight on your shoulders can really break you but a) no one asked her to put that weight on her shoulders, she chose that position herself and b) she is very judgmental and is sitting on a high horse throughout all of it. She really comes off as someone who thinks she's the best one out of all of them - she always makes the right decisions in her head and everyone else around her fucks up. THAT'S what makes her so dislikeable. I could go into more examples of her hypocrisy, but they would be spoilers for the show, so I'll stop, but the point is she fucks up and then blames other people when she does - if you want a character to not be liked, that is a perfect way to do it.
@@jordanmorris4797 yeah, like i think we end up being harsher toward Steve and Shirley when it comes to Luke cause we see very little of what happened through all these years even if it's heavily hinted. We see an adorable little Luke and an older Luke who's sweet and is trying hard to stay clean, and then we see how harsh Steve and Shirley adult versions often act with him and we tend to forget how supportive they both were before. They are far from perfect, but aside from what happened when they were little, i can't imagine how hard, how mentally and emotionally exhausting the situation was in all these years, with little hope things were going to change with him at a point.
3:10 watching this show my theory is that when mom picked up the hat she could feel that something was wrong with it, that’s why that shot focuses on her hands, and why she quickly makes the excuse that it’s too big, that’s what I think anyway!
You guys are so empathetic, the Mike Flanagan series are perfect for you! They're all about heart and humanity (with spooks too) and I really hope you do the rest of them!
I have seen this show so many times and have watched so many reactions on here but am so happy to be watching with you guys! This show hits you in all the feels because it's about the human experience and trauma that can manifest in so many different ways. Luke breaks my heart but just buckle up for the next one. It keeps getting better every episode. Liked and subscribed girls!❤
I hope you guys continue with The Haunting of Bly Manor. Same cast, all new set of characters they play, another great well written character driven horror-thriller 🙌🏾
Love watching people react to this series, it is phenomenal! Have you been noticing any of the background ghosts? They're fun 😂 really enjoying these reactions! ❤
Luke assumes that when Nell appears at the foot of his cot and says “Go!” that she was telling him to go after Joey. He says this to Joey later in the episode, and we, the viewers, are thus manipulated into believing Luke’s assumption to be true. It isn’t. Nell’s “Go!” Is far, far more significant, but the truth won’t be revealed until the finale. It’s jaw-dropping. Keep your eyes peeled for a similar Nell/Luke moment in Ep. 7 with the same significance. It’s brilliant writing, how the viewer is subtly diverted from the true meaning, and very intentional. Crazy good.
I feel like the hat guy is also signifying Luke’s addiction. It’s creeping closer and closer when he’s going through tough times and he got so close and I think that was make or break for Luke, give in to addiction or stay sober. Luckily the headlights came through and Steve found him.
i have seen so many reactions to this show (because it is one of my all time favorites) and i really enjoy your videos! It's always like watching it for the first time, i love it! I’d say it’s a little more muddled than just one stage of grief per person; they all have a some of each. But yeah Steven’s mostly denial of grief and what happened (via detachment, but he’s also bargained as we’ll see later; he’s taken some steps) Shirley’s mostly bargaining (insisting on “fixing it”, but that’s also denial again) Theo’s anger (and avoidance, which is sort of denial again, again) Luke’s probably depression except I’d say the next character we’ll meet also fits - Theo even makes a comment that’s very indicative of that character having clinical depression.
