They lost the supplier of laminated steel some years ago, all stocks went out until full carbon models released (model 106 and 120, but not 105 or 122). Now they are producing laminated again to some degree it seems like. I go for laminated.

I've had my full carbon version for about two years and it holds an edge extremely well, even under heavy use doing general craft projects in a range of materials. Excellent value for money.

Hello, I have a question from Turkey. While I am trying to carve wood, even though I try to make a small dent in the wood, a large piece of wood breaks off. Is the problem with the wood or my knife (sorry for my bad English, I looked it up in translation)

It may be that the wood is too dry and brittle. Do you know what kind of wood you are carving?

@@CarvingisFunI don't know what kind of wood I am carving, but I think it is a hard wood. Thank you very much for your help, I hope your channel reaches more followers. 😊

are you carving against the grain? if your knife is digging into the wood grain and splitting it, you need to approach from a different angle. if youre interested, this guys channel has some very informative videos about recognizing wood grain and using proper technique to carve.

seems the full carbon would be harder to sharpen correctly with more tendency to round. Solid carbon could also make annealing harder in manufacturing easier. Wasn't one of original reasoning for laminate and old hardness level was sharpening ease along with knife flexibility? Seems going full carbon today with modern steel manufacturing would be for cost savings instead of asset benefit.

The softer steel is indeed easier to reshape, but I find myself having to do that less frequently with the harder steel edge. My experiences sharpening too is that the carbon steel edge is actually easier to maintain as I don't have to take it to the stones so often, just strop and go.
Regardless, I say use whatever version fits your fancy :)

Seems like all the quality carving knives recommended are all out of stock. My kid liked the Helvie from another video; 18 month waiting list. Looked at a OCC-Tools and I think they were all out of stock for 6 months? The first Mora after seeing this video was also out of stock.
Perhaps the kid and I should learn how to make quality carving knives instead! 🤔
