@Cre80s I'm 55 years old and I too saw the Broadway production in New York starring Frank when I was 10 years old. I thoroughly enjoyed it just as I did the Broadway production of Sweeny Todd starring Angela Lansbury. The set designs for Dracula in conjunction with the performances of the actors were breathtaking. Frank Langella was magnetic and I am thankful for having one of the best grandfather's ever. RIP to the memory of Mr. Ned Jones ❤❤❤❤
I like to think that he was never actually vulnerable to the sun, and that he and Lucy came up with this plan so that he could escape as he had no other way of dealing with them. He would make them think that he is dead, and Lucy has his blood in him and will become a vampire when she dies.
Hypergamy. Had to settle for Beta provider (Harker) but is an Alpha Widow (Dracula) - she's smiling thinking of all the wild $3X she had (or vampiric equivalent)
It's strange. As excellent as his portrayal is; I can't say that I was ever scared or even intimidated. Perhaps Mr. Langella could have used a few fangs/prosthetics. Actually the scariest vampire in the movie was the actress playing Mina VanHelsing.
In all fairness, this is the version of Dracula I appreciated the most. Didn't require over the top digital effects. This is what 20th century cinematography was all about: Screenplay and acting.
@@williamphillips6049It’s probably because Langella played him in the Broadway revival and that was the basis for the Bela Lugosi Dracula of the 30’s. So this film had more in common with the original play and film than the Christopher Lee Dracula’s later on
I saw Frank Langella play Dracula live in the stage play in NYC in the early 80s and he was AMAZING. The movie messed up the bedroom scene with all the "special effects". All that was needed was Langella and his lady!
This is a very good movie. Dracula was portrayed very differently in this film, rather saddened by his existence and quite lonely. Took Lucy as his Countess, as opposed to Mina. The score by John Williams is excellent.
The ending was always sort of nebulous and creepy. Did he survive??? Frank was such a handsome vampyre...as the undead tend to be. He played this well on stage on Broadway...this was an under rated film. Nice bit of nostalgia though...thanks.
Great movie. The final scene of Dracula's cape flying on it's own over the ocean & then soaring upwards into the clouds is pretty awesome. It seems to suggest that even though Dracula was destroyed, he has evolved into a more powerful Dracula resistant to sunlight & might return in a sequel. Christopher Lee's Dracula always came back after being destroyed numerous times, so why not Langella's Dracula? At least one more time.
This happened at the end of House Of Dark Shadows based on the TV Series Created by Dan Curtis. At the end of the movie, we see a Bat Fly off after Barnabas Collins was Killed by Jeff Clark. There was talks of a second movie, but Jonathan Frid was against it since he was tired of playing the Role in both the Series and the Movie.
This version of Dracula was the first Vampire movie that I ever saw as a child. I remember that my Mother took me to the movie theater to see it. I remember bits and pieces of it, but I remember the ending scene like if it was yesterday.
If Dracula's yells were amplified, the decibel levels would be off the charts. Something like that would send chills down your back. Frank Langella did an incredible job portraying him. The soundtrack is incredible.
Maybe Lucy was happy knowing that Dracula’s curse had finally ended. She did care for him and they had passion. His cape flying away could be interpreted as his tormented soul being freed. I look at it more like that instead of Dracula escaping to return later.
Seeing Dracula scream and shake uncontrollably because of the sun burning him to death is unsettling, Frank Langella sure did a great job playing Dracula in this movie but the sad thing is this movie never got much attention nor did it get a sequel and we’re all left wondering if Dracula did survive.
Good horror this with a creepy atmosphere. The scene under the graveyard is frightening. Apart from the mistake of killing VH and making Dracula a matinee idol, this is one of the better Draculas.
You are correct, the movie has vibrant colors when it was released. But the director desaturated all the later releases, as he had originally wanted it too look less colorful. The fans hated it. But the movie is finally available in its original more colorful version nowadays, on Blu-Ray.
@ thanks for the info. I can see the directors logic and usually i defer to the directors cut of most films but I def prefer the look of original release.
Russian ship, with Hungarian crewmembers: 00:17: "Bolond vagy?" "Are you crazy?" 00:24: "Te Jóisten! Mit csináltok?!" "Good God! What are you doing?!" :D

Love Frank Langella, Laurence Olivier and Trevor Eve but this scene was so funny. played so over the top like the Dracula films with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.. I loved the film.
Kate Nelligan is hot in this, and this is the best Dracula version in my opinion. Langella not having fangs in it takes away from the realism of being a vampire but other than that, the cast, settings, and actors , and the music makes it fantastic.

This movie was actually a really good one. I kinda consider this one to be on par with Vampire the Masquerade, given how Dracula gives the kiss to his victims (You see the similarities? 🙂) And as of Dracula's cape flying off? It probably means that although Dracula was defeated at this point in time, he can NEVER be truly dead. Who knows where that Dracula is hiding? Will we see him again?

This was a wonderful interpretation of Dracula. Langella played the character well. His baritone really enhanced the mystic of Dracula.
The finale for this Dracula version, with his cape floating away in the sky as a sign that he might return, is timeless.
It was a hit on Broadway with Frank in the title role as well!

Because they did not drill the steak in his heart
This is such an underrated film, hardly ever on but Frank Langella did a great job as Dracula.
Completely agree with you
I've always been a Dracula fan, and I absolutely went crazy over this movie. Loved it!
I first saw this Dracula in my teens on VHS while vacationing with relatives. I loved it too.
This movie was fantastic. I had to hunt down the DVD for my collection. Frank Langella owned this character.
