    I disagree with your summary of Franklin, if anybody is a true representative of this particular culture, it's his friend Lamar. Franklin is disintrested with the goings on of his community, he calls Lamar and his shoot first mentality silly and unnecesssary. Franklin seeks less to argue with the world around him, and more to control his own life, and even control the world around him. To call him merely a representative of his culture is a bit diminutive. The fact that Jimmy tries to mask himself around Franklin is more of an insult to his character. Franklin is an example of the percentage of his population that is misunderstood thanks to the media that criticizes this culture.

      wasn't the point of their little bit on Franklin to show that he wasn't like that? They weren't calling him "the true representation", they were saying that he and his "friends" are what people like jimmy THINK is the true representation of blacks.

    I see a lot of people seem to ignore Trevor's moment of sanity, it doesn't seem like he is even that borderline insane as he is portrayed to be intelligent on multiple occasion. There are moments in which he make great commentary on the world. After the torture, he choose to let the man go. It can be said that Trevor is the truest of all the three characters.
    Both Michael and Franklin resents the aspects of their criminality and enjoys the fine life while Trevor live in a trailer and is free to do whatever that pleases him, unrestricted by anything, he expresses himself truthfully and has no reserves in doing what he wants because he acknowledge himself to be a horrible person while Franklin and Michael still delude themselves into thinking they are not horrible people despite having committed numerous heinous crimes.

    • @LeoMidori
      @LeoMidori 7 лет назад +121

      That's a damn good point~ both Michael and Franklin pretend that they're better than other criminals because they won't stoop to what Trevor is, but that really is a constructed illusion to make themselves feel better about what they do, or might carry some guilt here and there, but do nothing to actually change for the better.

    • @olotocolo
      @olotocolo 6 лет назад +80

      Exactly, Trevor is, how he has many times said, honest. Franklin often complains he cannot get out from the hood, but he is the one coming back, keeping contacts there. He cannot handle big world and seeks guidance. Michale is two-faced traitor and hypocryte. Trevor is awful person and I hated most of the time he was on screen. But he is pure, he lives his life his ways and do not deny any actions and consequences. Rest lives in their own fake world.
      You can also see this in Michels conversation with their kids. "I always seen myself as a good guy" "we are doomed if you are the good guy". They very nicely poin out how full of shit he is.

    GTA needs to focus less on the online stuff and focus more on writing and storytelling its what rockstar is brilliant at. I really wish they made a proper expansion pack, the writing for this franchise has always been great, GTA online however got old very fast.

    • @OrigenalDarkMew
      @OrigenalDarkMew 4 года назад +2

      I wouldn't say it got old, story DLC would just be better. However, the planned story DLCs were salvaged and made into Online DLC. Doomsday was leaked as story DLC in 2015 and several years later it came out as an online DLC. Casino Heist too. Interviews revealed that low riders update was the make up for plans to have Lamar as a playable character, but the actor didn't have time to come into the studio for a while. So on the bright side at least we do have story type things in online...

      But Trevor always brings up the corruption of the country. During the Merryweather Heist, he talks to Frank about how the country is paying for private security, which ends up screwing over the tax paying citizens of the country, instead of simply having the actual soldiers/army secure the country, which is literally what they signed up for and financially beneficial for the citizens. As for Franklin, he always stands up for himself. He continuously mocks his gang leader, Stretch, knowing that Stretch could do many things to him such as put a hit out on him, he tells off Michael about white privilege (during the FIB Heist. On the way to the location to get the helicopter, Mike is complaining as usual and wants the world to feel bad for him. Frank is fed up and sarcastically says, "Poor Michael. Rich, white Michael...poor me, poor me, man, pour me a drink, nigga". He calls Tonya a bitch, tells off his Aunt Denise countless times and even goes off on Lamar for being an ungrateful dumb ass. Hell, he even murders everyone that's done him wrong at the end of the game. If that isn't standing up for himself, I don't know what is.

      +Alexandra Hook Nicely spotted.. :) I saw it as each of them acting out their archetype, but i'm not a psychologist or anything..
      Trevor covers his eyes and rejects reality because his delusions turned out to be true all along, and if the delusions are true, so is the fear and paranoia. So right before the sense of mortality set in and he was about to come to terms with the fact that he no longer had any control over his life, he blocked it out by covering his eyes, holding together what little insanity he had left.
      Franklin covers his mouth, I think, because he’s still young and ambitious. He knows better than to share valuable information, that he could use to gain an edge. He always thinks big, but rarely shares with anyone, causing his subconscious to briefly cover his mouth.
      Michael covers his ears and that’s how he is. Denial.
      Sorry for the wall.. :)

    Metal Gear Solid 2 is a striking commentary on postmodernist society and culture, and it constantly breaks the 4th wall to question the player's conventions and beliefs. A metagame.Fallout, Deus Ex, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, No More Heroes, Silent Hill 2, Dark Souls, Red Dead Redemption, Lisa... Those are philosophically heavy too.

      +Jorge Pereira Vila am sorry but how is dark souls philosophical?. I cant really see it. if anything the game is really depressing when you think about it. Your basically a zombie, who is stuck in some purgatory-esq place, where you must fight to survive and yet die over and over at the hands of some terrifying creatures. It reminds of me kenny from southpark, when he figures out he cant stay dead. and one of the other kids tell him immortality is cool. He responds very angrily, saying no its not "It fucking hurts" . In DKS the undead lose their sanity and memories with each death. So imagine your characters plight, Every waking moment he is constantly on the run from hideous monsters, which he must fight and kill, over and over again. With each death he gets stabbed, crushed, burned and tossed around. No wonder the undead eventually go mad. The game is very haha "Dark" and depressing . But i cant see any philosophy in it

    Some really interesting points made here but I wish you'd gone deeper into Frankin's character as there's way more to him than just being "the black one", he's probably the smartest guy of the trio and is pretty much the glue that holds them together throughout the game, also automatically assuming all the players are white is ehh and got wayy too much into 15-year-olds on Tumblr argument territory for me.
    Also am I the only one who plays the game for the story and exploration and satire/comedy? Like I like that the option of doing crazy shit is there but I actually don't do it nearly as much as I thought I would when I first started playing. Maybe that's just me tho ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I find it ridiculous that this torture scene is being sh*t on so much because it's a torture scene. The game is about criminals and killing people for the most part. What makes this one torture scene so much worse than killing literally thousands of people during all the other missions and freeplay?
      The fact that you complain about this shows that you didn't even play the damn game since it heavily criticised torturing during the dialogue afterwards.
      Bonus: you are actually getting that mission from some government officials, which is within itself criticism of the US government touring alleged terrorist to get information (which is useless since those people will either not talk no matter what or talk out there a** because they want it to be over which is exactly what is depicted in the game)
      This game and it's content is a reflection of reality and all of this is happening in the real world. You can choose to be upset and act like it's all just violence for the sake of violence or accept that it's a valid criticism of America and it's culture.

    Its very simple really, every day for the whole of our lives we are constrained by laws: By the laws of the country, by the rules of school or work, the laws of how to drive (follow these lines, drive at this speed, stop at this point, drive at that point, park in these places etc), how to live you life (you can eat this, you can't that, you should have this much of that, and no more tan three of that etc), even rules of conversations, what you can and can not say and the routine of small talk. And on top of all this we have a set routine that we like to think we can chose not to do but we can't, did you really choose to go to work/school this morning? No, you did it because you had to, you ate at lunch because that was the time to do so, you went home because it was time to go home. You may have also had to done something outside of school you didn't want, a family outing, an appointment at the doctors/dentist etc. With all these rules and laws and routines and restrictions, to be able to say "Fuck the lot of you!!!!" Before stealing a car, mowing down a bunch of guys and getting into an epic chase with the police.
    No matter who you are, its fun to step out of these restrictions, look back at them, stamp on the fuckers, crack out your petrol tank, pour that shit on their and light the fuckers up before batting a granny on the nogin with a baseball bat, stealing a car, sticking your middle finger up out the window before pulling out an Uzi and gunning down some random cunts before entering a 30 minute long race across the map to escape the pigs..... and then we turn it off, and go to bed because we have to get up in the morning to go to work, or to make sure we get to the opticians in time or to finish some work that we've been told we need to bring in tomorrow. We all like this, even the pricks who condemn violence in video games.

    Calling people sadists for enjoying running over animated people is jumping to conclusions annd misses a few major points. GTA does not reward good behavior like real life does. In fact, quite the opposite. By not punishing the character for dying or doing many of the rediculous things one can do, they are encouraging the curious gamers to explore the possibilies of the game. But what can a player do? One can go out and do yoga or play golf in real life without negative reprocussions. So what's the point of playing by the rules when you don't get punished for doing the unusual and probably illegal? To prove to fictional characters that you are good person? In addition, in a sandbox like GTA, why do the imaginable when you can be creative? The game is also made so that all the creative parts are illegal. In conclusion, people don't get joy out of running over the animated people. They get joy out of being able to do whatever the fuck they want. They enjoy being able to release their frustration with the social norms and behaviors of their real lives. It just turns out that means they run over animated people.
    This message is in loving memory of George. I'm sorry for running over you. May you be happy forever in digital heaven.

      That'd require even more conclusions to jump through

    • @vasim495
      @vasim495 6 лет назад +24

      It is jumping to conclusions. The yoga missions are boring, slow, linear, and there aren't as many variables at play. The simple gameplay is not enough to keep the mind entertained/occupied. But driving over random people, what car you're driving, how fast you're going, what part of the world you're in, what time of the day it is, what's the weather like, how long does it take for the cops to get there, how long can you keep it up, can you get away with it. There's also the fact that it allows you to escape reality, I can do yoga poses in my room watching RUclips, though I doubt I'd ever be insane enough to drive around like a lunatic. It's not that that's something I would enjoy, it's just that we are curious creatures.

      To be honest, your arguments derive from the conclusion that people are only good because society punishes the bad behavior, ignoring the large numbers of citizens who have done courageous acts in spite of the status quo (such as opposing an army, monarchy, reich or racism and even religious dogma). This would lend credence to the fact that most players are, in fact, repressing urges to lash out at a society they do not conform to. If your main reason for doing good is to simply avoid punishment, then you aren't really a "moral" person by the kantian definition, you just follow the rules.
      Also, not every gamer does the bad things presented to them simply because they have the chance. There are entire communities that deliberately avoid the bad outcomes because of feelings for inanimate characters, or because their moral compass would normally be against doing such things, even in a simulation. Now, as to whether those kinds of gamer would be the same crowd that plays GTA, I don't know, since I don't have a statistical chart with me. It'd be interesting, though.
      I think, however, you speak for a lot of the crowd of GTA, who simply like the freedom from systems given to them by the game. As such, this video does apply to you, as it shows the consequences of that kind of lifestyle.

      +J Nichols I would make the argument that Thug Notes is actually an inversion of the standard appropriation of black culture. In most cases, a "thug" wouldn't be expected to be well read in classical literature. You could still argue that the joke is just that a thug actually is, but a joke with that simple a punchline couldn't sustain a series. In thug notes, the books are not only summarized, but the literary analysis provided is quite sound, and at times incredibly insightful. Essentially, thug notes promotes the idea that even the most stereotypical-seeming person could quite intelligently tackle what have been considered the greatest literary works in history. It also tackles the idea that crude language can express an artful concept or abstraction as effectively as "elegant" language, which to me merits its own worth regardless of the race of the host.
      Would it work as well if the host was white? Probably not, if only because the audience would probably be laughing at a white guy trying to be a "thug". Which, really, says far more about the viewer's idea of "black culture" than it does Wisecrack's.
      Regardless, I think Thug Notes is brilliant, and I don't think anything Jared says here really reaches hypocrisy when it comes to that.

We aren't all sickos, but we easily get addicted to the rush of violence/power. You couldn't call a junkie a "sicko" because that would imply some sort of moral fiber issue when we all know its a simple chemical addiction mixed with a lack of healthy alternatives. Folks in power and those committing violence aren't all that different, it's a rush and it's how they've learned to handle things. Our kind used to actively struggle for survival, spear shit with a couple of buddies then rip its skin off and depose of its guts before we cooked its tasty fleshy bits. Those actions gave us a lot of excitement and a wicked good rush to ensure that we'd keep doing so and keep surviving. Same thing applies to all the violent, power hungry shit people often get addicted to; like taxing folks or passing arbitrary laws or earning so much money you have nothing better to do than join a creepy cult out in the middle of woods.

      ***** "Creepy cult out in the woods" is a reference to the bohemian grove, not the Klan. The Klan was a response to political encroachment by Northern Republicans who were using newly freed slaves as a core constituency to keep the South (a stronghold for the democratic party) politically weak and scattered.
      Bohemian Grove is a group of rich folks with nothing better to do (seemingly), but the civil war was an atrocity for the folks of the South and much of (if not all) of their wealth was decimated. Our nation is a bit touchy on the issue of slavery, but more than a half million young men died in that war. I think there was something around 20 million folks back then? If you adjust for the population, that'd be like six million young boys dead. The Klan, was certainly not a group of rich, bored folks looking for a good time.

      Classic rock was pop music of said era that the music was created in hence it was POP music of that generation making something classic does not lose its pop hence the word POP came from popularity so Technically speaking he does listen to pop music

    • @elmonster3571
      @elmonster3571 8 лет назад +18

      Robert Cummings Technically speaking during those times there wasn't a big difference between pop and rock. Hence why, for example, some say the Beatles played rock and others say they played pop. The differentiation was made during the mid 80's when harder genres of rock started to arise. Nowadays we refer as pop as, well, pop whereas we refer to rock as rock wether it's popular or not. So, yeah, if you want to get technical he does listen to 'popular' music, but that's not what they meant by "pop"

    Pretty much the same shit I gathered watching my boyfriend play (minus some feminist commentary). It just helps to have a concise, well-produced chunk of video to show people in defense of this game. The only issue with cleverly-constructed satire is Poe's law; unfortunately, the demographic most likely to be playing won't understand these messages or realize the characters are laughing right at (not with) them at points. I'm about as stuffy a Social Justice Warrior as you get, but I just have to applaud the intricacy of GTA's world from the writing to artistic direction to the soundtrack selections. It's an awesome game that confronts players with the cold, ugly truth and accountability some times, whilst sparing the player a nervous breakdown through a spattering of comic relief at others; the important thing is that the player has the space to think about these creative decisions, the decisions of other characters, why they were made and why they behave the way they do. It's too beautiful to ban and too honest to silence, but 70% of people don't get it and probably won't examine themselves all that deeply after a few hours of blowing shit up- minors, least of all.

    Your analysis falls apart when you reach Franklin. While your very pragmatic in your breakdown of other characters you ignore Franklin as an individual to make a prepackaged statement about the representation of black people in media. You do this to show your "sensitivity" to the black mans plight in america, but snub commentary falls on It's petard when you say things like "...accurate depiction of an authentic black male...". This isn't the kind of critique you extend to the other characters and as a result we get very little about Franklin himself and his actual relationship to the player.

  • @darklord884

    I don't think the racial thing would be Franklin's main message. Sure, Jimmy does try to act like him to be more friendly with him, Devin does too, though I think he does it more to ridicule or humour him, and Trevor simply speaks about what interests him, combined with his own views on gang members, which is if you remember, what Franklin was before the game's time, but ultimately decided to leave the gangs behind and try to make himself a name in something bigger. Which ended up being carjacking and assassination, but you know what I'm talking about. It's not that Franklin is supposed to be a stereotypical representation of a black man in some weird philosophical questioning of race ethics, that's rather Lamar. Franklin is in my opinion, the balance between Michael's and Trevor's ambitions. Michael wants to lead a laid back life of security for his family, but ultimately despises it because it's boring and he doesn't know what to do, while Trevor revels in the almost anarchic...

    • @darklord884
      @darklord884 8 лет назад +7

      ...ways of Sandy Shores, but is ultimately a violent, aggressive, insane and overall, not very nice individual. So this game, in my opinion, presents us the three ways to live. The two more radical ones: the person, who abandons their ambitions for a life of security and peace, but ultimately despises peace because there's nothing for them to do that really has an impact and the more explosive personality, who has the time of their life in an anarchic situation, but is ultimately a danger to others around them and themselves, meaning that they have to constantly pay attention to what they are doing, lest they end up on the mortician's table after another bombastic act of violence. They could've even left it at that, with the core game asking "What do you prefer, security or freedom?" But they gave us a third character. Someone, who has ambitions and the troubles they face in achieving them, but who ultimately wishes to lead a happy life, not one that devolves into anarchy.

    • @darklord884
      @darklord884 8 лет назад +7

      In fact, I think the full question is "Do you prefer ultimate freedom and the cruelties you might have to commit to preserve it or the security that might leave you not as free and bored as Hell. But safe." It is a parallel to what a philosopher named Schopenhauer said a long time ago. The World is simply a thought in and of itself. An imagined reality, ruled by a blind will. That will is ambition, which is what we follow, what we want to achieve. However, this blind will is unsatisfiable, as it will always wish for something more, as we ourselves always wish we had something better or could do something more, etc. So that makes life itself an endless suffering. However, if we abandon the blind will in order to negate the suffering, that leads to endless boredom. So, according to Schopenhauer, our goals should be to suffer as little as possible, while still doing our best to achieve what we strive for. That is, with the parallels of the three main characters, is an interesting thought.

    Good video - As a GTA 5-latebloomer (I only started playing this game in 2019) I was astonished and amused at the brilliant satire and social commentary this game offers. Here some recent observations: 1.) I killed a woman close to the tennis court and instead of intercepting or calling the police, two NPCs took out their smartphones to take pictures of the murder scene; 2.) When I entered a triathlon with Micheal and was leading the field, the news commentators always mentioned my "mid-life crisis" as a motivation to participate the traithlon -> it's funny because I have personally met so many managers that became obsessed with marathons in their mid-40s, in an attempt to prove their manhood and boost their egos 3.) Having attended psychotherapy, Dr. Friedlander strongly reminded me of a former shrink of mine - greedy, smug and up his own arse, while giving generic advise and half-hearted cheers. 4.) the anal-fixated yoga-instructor, as a caricature on how yoga is perceived

      GOD YES! I would love to see Darko get your psych break-down. My own take on the film was one of a dark rather absract take on teenage angst.

    11:39 - Close but not true, there is a single white character who didn't put up a black accent when talking to Franklin. He's the FIB guy who said "yeah, but we're good corrupt!", Michael's buddy. Honestly I forget his name. We see this happen during the last scene with Lamar towards the end of the game.

    This is an exceptional analysis. I'd love to see one of these for all the GTA games from GTA 3 up.

    The scariest part of Trevor is that he sometimes says something kinda wise and you have to admit to yourself that you agree with a homicidal psychopath.

    I was with you up until the appropriation part. Smoking weed is not a thing only black people do everybody does it.

      +Ian it's not as much the act of smoking but rather some of the culture around it, while weed has now become similar to alcohol in the meaning that everyone from any race, social class or sexual orientation does it, some of the different cultures that surround weed smoking belong mostly to black culture and are being appropriated by white people, for example a teenager who says things like "420"or "let's blaze", or wears clothes filled with weed images, things that might have meant something before, or where representative of an idea, but are now basically a joke thanks to white appropriation of different cultures/

      But also everyone isn't disproportionately arrested for smoking weed even for smoking at the same rates

      +bromo sanovo except weed culture is not a mainly black culture thing and never has been. Smoking has been around for much longer than 2012 and its in pretty much every culture around the world.
      the reason that Michael gets way too high is because he doesn't smoke weed he's an alcoholic and Franklin does smoke weed regularly

      +bromo sanovo and from what I can tell 420 came from some white students in 1971.
