When I was very young , just starting out in life, I saw an elderly lady trying to flag down a ride.
I had a 1965 Volkswagon Beetle car which was very rusty, but worked very well. She saw me and waved very hard so I stopped.
She said she was very glad to see me because poor people always stop when she needs help.
i had to laugh because it was a sideways compliment. She had an appointment and her car was in the shop being fixed. Since I was on my way home from work, I waited for her, to take her home. When her appointment was finished she was surprised to see me but thankful, because the dealership had called her and said her car was ready.
She had one of the early satellite telephones and when I saw her car I was surprised because it was a huge Cadillac. I waved bye to her but she waved me back to her. She said "I couldn't let you go without giving you a little thank you." And she tucked a folded up bill in my work apron pocket. I thanked her and left and didn't think much of it until I went to put my apron in the laundry. It was a hundred dollar bill! Bigger than my paycheck in those days. It sure helped a single mother!
