275 rescued: Largest alleged dogfighting operation in South Carolina

- We assisted the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General with the seizure of 275 dogs from an alleged dogfighting operation throughout multiple properties in the Columbia, South Carolina, area. South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, non-profit organization Bark Nation, and several licensed veterinarians also assisted with the seizure. See our Animal Rescue Team care for and bond with some of the dogs found to be in critical condition from this operation.
Federal officials served search and seizure warrants on 10 properties around 9 a.m. on Sept. 25. The dogs were found living outdoors in pens or on chains with barrels or other makeshift shelters as their only protection from the elements. Many of the dogs were thin and had no apparent access to food or water, despite the sunny and hot weather.
Responders observed dogs with severe scarring, as well as festering open wounds, lacerations and abscesses. Several dogs who were penned or chained to trees in the woods were deemed critical due to the severity of their wounds and were immediately removed from the properties for emergency veterinary care.
Some dogs eagerly greeted responders with wagging tails and kisses, while others hunched over and peered reluctantly at the responders.
“It’s truly distressing to come upon dogs who are severely injured yet chained to trees or left to languish in a pen instead of getting the care they desperately need,” said Adam Parascandola, vice president of the animal rescue team for the Humane Society of the United States. “Thanks to all the agencies who intervened on behalf of these dogs, this is the last day they’re going to have to live like this.”

The penalties for those who attend dog fights should be just as severe as for the creators of them.
This a especially pertinent given the rings are often kept on public lands, not on private property like someone’s backyard. So the “owner-operators” of these operations are difficult to identify. Every one of them should be charged with felonies with no plea deal options.

I have seen SO many victims of dog fighting, even saved a couple by taking them to a vet clinic in South Carolina as I visited my sister.....

@@bgomez22gb that's far from the truth. I have seen hundreds of dogs coming out of these exact types of situations brought back to optimal health, rehabilitated and homed.
Hard to know dogs are suffering such cruel torturous treatment. On huge chains no water no good food . Wounds infected waiting for the monstrous devils to put them in their filthy dog fighting ring. I hope these merciless people are found. So glad these dogs were found and given vet care and LOVE.

This should be a death sentence. If people knew what these people really did to these dogs even before they are forced to fight, they would throw up! These dogs are forced to defend themselves to the death. They even use puppys and kittens to harden them. They are evil people that deserve to be put down or they WILL keep doing this in another location. It must be a very hard punishment or they won’t stop. These dogs are just like children and they don’t understand.

I just don't understand how people can be so cruel to helpless beautiful animals that are so affectionate and give you their love unconditionally I adopted three beagles that came from a horrible situation and they are so happy and loving and I love them everyday and I give to the Humane Society every month just like paying my mortgage these animals deserve so much better thank you Humane Society for taking care of these animals God bless

I say leave the chains and “housing” of these animals then chain the “people” (that’s going a stretch) to their private rooms and leave them there w/o water or food. If they get fed they can eat out of all the dirty bowls. Water the same. Just be sure to make the chains REAL tight! Leave them there for a minimum of a week..... or longer. 🐾♥️🐾

I don’t understand how people don’t realize that it’s the owners fault when they talk about banning these breeds for being aggressive.
I think those that are involved and dogfighting should either be publicly flogged, tied up and used as a chew toy for one of their former fighting dogs, and most definitely do jail time, pay a big fine and never ever be allowed to own an animal again. how do I adopt? I've lost my two babies this year and my heart is so empty! I want to give another baby a good home. I'm single, a retired RN and willing to travel to adopt!
So many of these dogs are just babies. What is the next step ? How long do they have to sit in a shelter as evidence ? And will they be eligible for adoption?
