Bought my first Lee Oskar in 1986-Austin TX when they were $13...easier to play than others...louder, easy to bend, conserves air, I don't get winded, don't blow reeds like I did with brand H...Great Instrument!

Lee Oskar was amazing in the way he used his instrument as an inside voice of the "War" R&B fusion horn section. Nobody else has ever really done that, and it absolutely makes so much musical sense. Once you mic the "harp", the sound can be colored in many ways, but the breathiness is always there in the background. Every once in a while, it peeks up out of the inner texture, but he seldom has it in your face as a constant solo instrument, the way that most blues harp players do. Through most of their songs, you'd swear it was a saxophone.
Sometimes you really hear it more as a harmonica, but it always serves the needs of the song! (see him doing his thing at 2:00 ) A real musician's musician, as all of these hit-making guys tended to be! It's all about the groove!

It always had a harmonica on it. Lee Oskar on harmonica and Charles Williams on alto sax played simultaneously on the original recording. You can see then doing so in the official video at about 1:40. It’s a nice little video, ruclips.net/video/hg_KZQ7k3kI/видео.html if you are interested to see it.
It’s probably one of the coolest harmonica riffs of all time.

Brian McManus maybe my lungs are shot, because I don't find it responsive at all. Now the crossover is responsive. could you recommend a top shelf Lee Oscar brand. ? I've owned Lee Oscars and they have leaked air. Not responsive at all.

The first time I played a Lee Oskar harmonica, about 24 years ago, was like a breath fresh air. Admittedly I had only played a cheap Hohner Pocket Pal before then, which was the starter harmonica I first learned to play on, and I found the Pocket Pal to be hissy, hard work and just plain nasty. At first I thought it was something wrong with the way I was playing. But the first Lee Oskar I played was crisp and clear and ridiculously easy to bend notes on. I still use them now and can get them to do pretty much whatever I want them to do, and are really responsive. They are notoriously hard to overblow on, but since I don’t really overblow anyway that’s not an issue for me.

It’s a giant version of the notation chart for the different types of harmonica in the Lee Oskar range that comes included in the box when you buy a Lee Oskar harmonica. Hole numbers are on the black line with the blow notes on the top line and the draw notes on the bottom line. I’ve been using Lee Oskars for for a little over 20 years and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
